The action resulted | § from a run-in Dykes had with Gold Coast Is Heading To Full Independence As Nation By ARCH MacKENZIE Canadian Press Staff Writer LONDON (AP)--The Gold Coast, a little cocoa-rich chunk of West * | Africa, enters a mew phase June 15 of a bold and far-reaching ex- riment in Britain's colpnial pol- 1" For the first time, a British African colony will elect a' legis- lative assembly from which an all- African cabinet, bearing virtually full authority, will be named. The next step for the Gold Coast will be independence--within she Brit- ish Commonwealth of Nations, it is _hbped. Boned the hot;house growth of democracy in the 92,000-square-- mile area, whose peoples came under firm British control only about 50 years ago, lies a big gamble touching: the whole ecolon- ial empire. If the 4,200,000-odd citizens of the Gold Coast can balance on own political feet, they will have done these things: : Set a possible patern for chan- nelling litical ambitions in other Bri African colonies; of fered hope and encouragement to other areas involved in the politi- cal evolution of the colonial em- pire; and shown yet another route to membership within the British Commonwealth. FAILURE WOULD HURT If the Gold Coast fails to live up to the confidence it has in- spired in the British colonial of- fice, there probably will be just HEADACHE? umpire Ed Hurley in New York Sunday. Coach Tom Oliver took over as acting manager. JUNE BRIDES LOVE A&P"s LOW PRICES! But You Don't Have To Be A Bride Fo Benefit By A&P's Low Prices - Come See . . . Come Save! Substantial reasons lie behind the decision to give the Gold Coast its political head only eight years after it became the first 'African colony with a native major- ity in the Assembly and only three Jeary the first general elec- n. Thanks to world cocoa demand, the Gold Coast continues wealthy and a major dollar earner in the sterling area. Thanks to intensive missionary and educational work falling on fallow ground, there has developed a seemingly intelligent, responsible and willing-to-learn group of politicians, Nor does the problem of rac arise as in Kenya with its Ear ans, Africans and Indians. Gold Coast whites are mainly traders and far in the minority. Under a new constitution an- nounced just after the Gold Coast government had cleared itself of corruption charges, the enlarged Assembly and cabinet will wield authority over everything but the former German colony of Togo- land, defence, foreign affairs and certain matters concerning police. PREMIER'S PROBLEMS The governor will discharge these responsibilities on the advice of a special committee containing government representatives. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, United States-educated politician who was released from jail to head his Con- vention People's Party govern- ment after the last elections, is expected to return as prime min- ister. His problems: More secondary industry to reduce dependence on cocoa and other primary products and trained personnel to run the country. One Qojest being con- sidered is' the Volta river alumi- num plant, in which Canadian aluminum interests are concerned. The final Gold Coast step to the Commonwealth is a question which all existing members of the Com- monwealth," the British govern- ment said in announcing the terms of the new constitution. - The expected rub is South Africa, which on its race record may ob- ject to sharing equal status with an African territory.
