Her sole concern is for her six-year-old son, she says. He is an only child, reserved and quiet, and she has always been a wor- rier and overly protective of him. He can't eat this or that, she still warms his milk, and she frets unduly if he goes without a cap or .runs a little more than she thinks he should. Since his dad's death, she doesn't wake him in 4 |the mornings, if he is sleeping soundly on schools days. "He needs his rest," she .will say--but he also needs to attend school, to keep up with his classes. Also Maude won't go anywhere if it means she won't be home % |waiting to welcome Junior after a colored polka dots and is wide enough to be a real protection from raindrops. Many of you want to know i fat or thin thighs are in- berited, and if they can be changed with exercises or diet. Figures prove that certain char- acteristic contours stem from the limbs of the family tree, and the normal variations in fat distribu- tion are inherited. However, you do mot inherit flabby muscles nor and outer thighline rechapes this measurement. Kinesiology, the science of mus- cular mov e ment, reveals just which muscles shape the thighs. The muscles on the front of the thigh get enour™ use, for they are brought into 'on in everyday movements--1 ;, sitting, walk- ing. Therefore, the front portion of the thigh is usually shapely. It's th muscles that flank the inner and outer thighline at the top of the hips that lose tone from lack of exercise. Today's exercises con- centrate on these muscles. school--afraid he might think she, too, "had gone for good." And : |she won't go any place where she and her husband went together. MIGHT BOOK HELP? Maude cries constantly and frets so much about Junior that he is miserable. Movement: Raise right leg side- wards about 10 inches in air, then bring under leg up to meet it, and hold for a second, then lower. This exercise acts on the muscles that flank the inner thigh border. Change sides and repeat, three times. P sition: Same, lying on left ior balance. Movement: Raise top of leg and make wide circles from the hi 'oint, circling 10 counts in one di- rection, then 10 in the opposite di- rection. Change sides and repeat the exercise. As I have a normal family life, with four sons and a hus- band, I feel sorry for mother and son; and while I know that chil- dren have to be properly watched, I think there is a limit. It is unfair to the boy to pamper him so; he needs to learn independence. Another friend and I have dis- cussed the situation and agreed that one or both of us should give Maude a good talking-to. She may resent it and I may lose a friend; but it might be worthwhile if it would snap her out of this. Can you suggest a book to help her? And can you tell me what to say to her, and how to say it? Please don't delay. J.S. FEARS HER WEAKNESS Dear .S.: All that you say of Maude's behavior adds up to a picture of an excessively depend- ent personality. She feels she can't face life, adult fashion, without her husband's supporting presence. That is why she lapsed back into her parent's home to stay indef- initely. Also why she won't go places where she and he went to- gether. And why she talks of him constantly--a kind of emotional Ideal Dairy COTTAGE CHEESE Low IN COST HIGH IN PROTEIN food value, Eeshy prepared for light lunches, snacks ond salads. Maude's tearful moping and fussy "smother-love'" are sym- ptomatic of a chronic anxiety com- plex, now aggravated by shock and stress. Being immature, and lack- ing confidence in herself as a per- son, she unconsciously assumes she will do badly as a mother, and compulsively exercises poor judg- ment under the influence of a cloud of fears.
