16 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Wednesday, December 30, 1958 ' ~The Case of the Empty Department Store... ECENTLY in New York, a photo-engravers' strike forced the daily newspapers to suspend publication. The mammoth presses were shut down . . . the usual noisy and bustling newsroom was empty and silent . . . the cry of the newsboy was unheard in the streets of the great metropolis. Most noticeable were the huge department stores whose aisles would ordinarily be teeming with eager Christmas Shoppers. Expectant and prepared for a record Yuletide business, they found their stores deserted with only an occasional customer wandering without purposeful direction and lacking an in- centive to buy. The very infrequent ring of a cash register echoed loud and portentous, enhancing the ensuing silence of the deserted store. Without the prompting of advertising the customers stayed at home in thousands! " @ This True Story only re-emphasizes the power of the printed word . . . proves again the dependence of the shopper on the daily published advertisement. This actual occurrence demonstrates to the rétailer that the medium of NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING IS INDISPENSABLE FO" SUCCESSFUL MERCHANDISING. It possesses the unique distinction of timeliness, awaiting the convenience of the reader and assuring the advertiser that every communication in- cluded in it will be available to every member of the family at a time of his or her own choosing.
