INSTITUTE MEETING The December meeting of the Womens Institute was held on the afternoon of December 8 with Mrs. M. Ellicott in charge of the meet- ing. Reports of the weekly euchres were given, also the Christmas boxes sent to the boys in the serv- i The dinner given the Ball club. Mrs. H. Barclay gave 'a well compiled report on the Area Convention held in Toronto in No- vember. Christmas gifts were ex- changed by the members. The In- stitute was to sponsor a Christ- mas door decoration contest for Brougham and vicinity, judges to be Mrs. Pegg of Claremont. Miss Edna Green of Greenwood, Mrs. Irwin of Whitevale. Mrs. W. Elli- cott won the first prize, Mrs. L. Johnston, second prize, Mrs. J. Burrows third prize. The hostesses for the institute meeting were Mrs. Milne, Mrs. G. Duncan, Mrs. G. Gray, Mrs. H. Malcolm. EDITH PEARS Correspondent FRENCHMAN'S BAY -- It is nice to hear that Mrs. Korczyinska and Antoinette Korczyinska are both well enough to be home for Christmas. This is a nice Christ- mas gift for the family. Mrs. Margaret MacDonald of Ottawa is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs, Fred Beckstead. Mrs. Mary Hofston, Moorelands estate, and formerly of Frenth- man's Bay, is under the doctor's care. It is hoped' she will soon be improved enough to discontinue the doctor's services. Mrs. Kirby is improving but is still not able to do all the things she used to do. It is nice to know so well. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Wilkin of Toronto visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Pears on the weekend and+Mr. and Mrs. C. Pears, were uests at the home of Miss Joyce ichardson of Toronto. CHRISTMAS CONCERT On Thursday evening the Fair- ort United Church Sunday School eld its annual Christmas concert in the church hall. There was a lovely Christmas tree lighted up to celebrate the occasion, and Master Brian Skitch gave a recitation of welcome to the parents and friends who had gathered. This was fol- lowed by another welcoming reci- tation by Miss Wendy Williamson. The Beginners' class sang "Away in a Manger'. There was a recita- tion by David Osgoode. Grade 1 sang "Rudolph, .The Red-Nosed Reindeer", with much vim and vigor and Alice Henderson and Keith Fertile both gave lovely Christmas recitations. Grades 1 and 2 combined to sing "Silent Night'. This was followed by a recitation by little Fay Bakalaar. All joined in the singing of "Come All Ye Faithful" after which Margaret Parrs gave a very appropriate recitation. Carols were sung in which all joined. Nine boys spelled out €hristmas and each had a recitation. This was put on by the juniors. The Intermediate group put. on a Christmas scene with Mary, Joseph, the Baby, the Wise Men and shepherds. Harry Cook, Jr., being the narrator and | little Keith Avis gave a final recita- | ti on. |. Santa Claus arrived to the sing- |ing of Jingle Bells and distributed the! gifts and bags of candy to the children. The ladies of the church served a lovely lunch to the kid- | dies and adults. Altogether it was | a lovely program and all who took | part in it deserve a lot of credit. | CANDLELIGHT SERVICE On Sunday night Fairport | United Chureh held its annual candle-light service. The church was beautifully decorated with white candles and 'mums. The win- {dows and organ were lighted by | the candles and a beautiful big bas- | ket of 'mums decorated the front of the church. Rev. Mr. Burgess of Dunbarton took the service and spoke on the 53rd Hymn, "A Little Town of Bethlehem", The carols were sung and all joined in. The carols' were alternated by riate verses of Scriptuge which explained Joe meaning of the earol. Chief Hill of Pickering Township Police, well - known Irish tenor, wds guest solo- ist and sang ** Stranger of Galilee". 1 The church was well filled and the congregation included a num- ber of Toronto guests. At the close of the service the ladies of the church served a nice lunch and all enjoyed a very sociable half-hour of fellowship. The regular 2 p.m. service was held as usual. Each first and third Sunday evenings the church holds an evening service. All are invited to all services. CLUB HOLDS PARTY . The Frenchman's Bay Club of the Pickering Township Junior Po- lice had its. first Christmas Party. Instead of the usual. activities a program was put on for the boys by the following: i Ronnie Dobbin and Grant King who sang carols and cowboy songs. Beverley McMullen danced; Roger Carleton sang and danced; Lucille Schwalm did acrobatics and danc- ed. David Hastings of Toronto danced. Karen Schwalm played a piano solo and Chief Hill played and sang. At the conclusion of the program 41 boys received their official (GREETING dhe New Yean. REWARD SHOE STORES 'Carols Are Yule Tribute For a great many péople the music of Bach and Handel make difficult listening -- until Christ- mas comes around. Then, sudden- ly, everybody 'starts singing and humming tunes by the two old masters. | The reason for this is that both Bach and Handel were church musicians: 'One of their tasks was to compose songs for church con- gregations to sing. They proved emselves masters of beautiful, easily followed melodies. "How Brightly Beams the Morn- ing Star" was composed by Bach and his *""Christmas Oratorio" con- tains the themes of several other popular chorales. In almost every town and vil- crests which makes them full fledged members of the French- man's Bay Club of the Pickering Township Junior Police Club. The boys are ud of their crests and it is ho) these will be an incen- tive for the boys to live up to the Principles of the club. ERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Steve Culley had a surprise visit from Mr, and Mrs. Forester and family of Toronto. Mrs. Forester is Mr. Culley's sis- ter. Mr, and Mrs. Frank Nichol, for- merly of Frenchman's Bay and now of Toronto, were visitors at Frenchman's Bay this week. Mrs. Robert Balsdon is suffering | from a severe cold. It is hoped she | will be able to get rid of it before Christmas anyway. Let us make this holiday season a real time of joy to all and drive carefully keeping in mind the chil- dren will be home from school and will be out playing and darkness comes early. There being no side- | walks or street lamps, it makes | it doubly hard for both drivers | and pedestrians but let us all ban together and do our part to make this holiday season a safe and happy one for all.
