(CP)--Stella Pan- arites returned to her home town io Drastise law and friends con- er success i defermina X a triumph of year-old Cobalt wom. graduated from Osgoode Hall, Tor- onto. She was one of two women and 182 men in the class and re- ceived her call to the Ontario bar this year. : Stella will be the third lawyer in town and she made the grade de- spite accidents as a child that CHILD GUIDANCE By CLEVELAND MYERS When a group of teen-age youths were asked what democracy means, 'freedom' was the over- whelming answer. Only a few added or even thought of mention- ing "responsibility." Nearly everything you may have heard or read in recent years about democracy in the home has em- phasized freedom of the child. Indeed some parents have thus been led to suppose that democ- racy in the family means letting the child do pretty much as he pleases. Trying to apply this theory in their own homes, these parents soon are living in a family of dictatorship in which the child is the tyrant and they are his slaves. DEMOCRACY IN THE HOME Of course, you and I despise dictatorship whether the child or the parent is the dictator. But dendocracy in the family is not an exact pattern of democracy in the state, though the objectives are the same in both. In a democratic state, all citizens have an equal | voice and equal freedom. Yet each person must reach maturity (21 years of age in practically all| states) hefore enjoying these] qualities. Until such time, the par-| ents are held more or less res- ponsible for the child. | | Therefore, the best democracy in the home prepares the child for | | the equalities and freedom in the |larger social: order of the state. ! PARENTS' JUSTICE AND LOVE Dr. Folson, professor of Sociol- | eh : kept her from school years. | Tall and Slender with flashing | black eyes, she is the daughter of | a Greek immigrant, George Pan- | arites, 76. Mr. Panarites came to | this northern Ontario mining town | 1906 and set up a restaurant. Stella was injured while playing with the fire chief's daughter. The lively seven-year-old didn't notice the hole in the floor through which firemen slide down their pole to the ground floor. She spent 2% years in the Hospital for Sick Chil- dren, Toronto. When she was 'dis- | charged, one leg was shorter than | the other. The second mishap occurred seven years later while Stella was trying out for the girls' hockey team at Cobalt high school. She broke a weakened thigh bone and was again away from school for more than two years. "But the second accident actu- ally turned out for the best," she says. "Dr. D. E. Robertson, a no- ted Toronto surgeon, attended me. When he was through, my leg was at normal length. I was in much better shape than after the first in- jury." for five | HOUSEHOLD HINT To dress up an open shelf in kitchen or bathroom, cut perman- ent shelf edging from thin ply- wood. This is especially attractive in scallop design, painted to match the shelves. Democracy in the Home Should Carry on Into Broader Life ogy of Vassar College, in the Aug- ust issue of 'Family Living," also points out that life in the family is essentially different from life outside; that good life in the fam- ily depends more upon justice and love and less upon equality and freedom. He deplores, as I db, ex- cessive permissiveness in Tiany families in which parents thin more of freedom and equality than of justice and love. . LEARNING RESPECT WOMEN THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Tuesday, December 22, 1053 tained that democracy in the home consists of deep regard by each member there for every other member: that to this end, ade- quate restraints well-established es- pecially in the early years and essential; that while parental understanding, companionship and necessary requirements later, are |rig H | easy, the want of adequate discip- | line destroys desirable family re- | lationship, and impairs democracy | in the home and, consequently, in the state. Without learning to respect the ights of all other persons there in the family, a child is not as likely to respect the rights of We have the kind of gifts every man . wants and likes.
