BARCLAY WARREN Many people seem to have troubles today. Good people have them too. The storm-tossed disci- ples on Lake Galilee had pushed off from shore at the command of Jesus. Mark 4:35. The disciples could stand it no longer. They wakened Jesus, saying, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace, be still." The wind ceased and there was a great calm. How often in the storms of life, whether they be occasioned by sick- ness, bereavement, social or finan- cial problems, has God seemed asleep? We were tempted to won- dr, "Does H car?" But when in our desperation we earnestly call- ed upon Him, He quickly came to our help. And there was calm. But Jesus had a searching ques- tion for the disciples on this oc- casion, He asked, "Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?" Their fear threatened to overwhelm them. Son of God and Son of Man! Glory and honor, Praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be Thinel Again and again during the thirteenth centuries, Christian crusaders of 'Europe organized military expedi- tions to march against the Turks in'Jerusaleum in an effort to wrest the Holy Land from the Moslems. Sometimes these campaigns 'brought temporary gains for the Christians, but most of them were unsuccessful. . On their marches to Jerusalem, according to a pretty legend which is accepted by many hymnists, the crusaders used to sing the hymn, "'Schonster Herr Jesu'. Some tran- slators who found it in a German song bogk, ave it the title, "Fair- est Lord Jesus". Others offered the name "Beautiful Saviour" which is most popular today. In many twentieth century song books, its verses and title are sup- plemented by the label, "Crusad- er's n'% Some students of hymnology be- lieve the song has been misnamed. There is 'no evidence, they say, to show that its words were use earlier than 1677 and its tune can- not be definitely traced back farth- er than in 1842. A German version of the hymn as it appears above was discovered in 1677 in the Huns- ter Hymn Book where it was listed as one of '"'three beautiful selected new hymns'. The identity of its author and the name of composer of its beautiful tune probably never will be known. The English translation, "Beautiful Saviour" as made by a Lutheran pastor of Philadelphia, the Rev. Joseph A Seiss. The familiar translation of "Fairest Lord Jesus' was first pub lished in 1850 by Richard S. Willis, American journalist and musician. His father was the founder of the 's Companion,
