4 THE PANY VIMBS-GATEYTE, Seturday, December 19, 3008 FIRST-AID TO THE AILING HOUSE By ROGER C. WHITMAN MLDEW ON LUMBER QUESTON: Last fall we start. ed to build our' home and finished |is the subfloor by the time it started to snow. We covered it with tar * paper but by spring there was a * foot of water in the basement this dampness caused mildew to form on the and the under- side of the subfloor. Could you tell me how to remove mil from Te RSWER It is not Hecessaty to remove the mildew from tim and rough woodwork. It is advis- able however, to apply a chemical wood preservative to Jreyent fur- ther growth. Lumber dealers and some hardware dealers carry in stock chemical wood preservatives. The use of this would not interfere with painting if you should decide to do so at a later date. If you want to remove the discoloration, apply a commercial wood bleach, follow- ing 'label directions. CRUMBLNG CONCRETE QUESTION: Last fall I had new concrete steps put on my pérch and the weather turned cold that night, causing the wet concrete to freeze. Since then the concrete has crumbled on the edges of the steps. Is there some way I can repair them? I don't believe the damage was more than one-quarter inch. ANSWER: Roughen up the con- crete and chip off the remainder of the crumbly material. Then make a fairly stiff but workable mixture of one part portland ce- ment and three parts of clean, coarse sand. After wetting down the concrete, put the mortar in place to make up the damaged area. It may be necess. to make up a simple form of plywood or ordinary lumber to hold the mortar in place while it is hardehing. In order to prevent the wood from sticking to the new concrete, apply a thin coat of paraffin. Keep the new cement mortar damp for sev- eral days to allow for proper hard- ening. member, however, that concrete work should not be done if the Jemperaiure Sons much below 50 degrees. you better postpone this job until 8 , . Nors S IN A PIPE LINE QUESTION: I am not positive but I believe I have air in my hot- water line. There is a banging noise (like someone hitting the wa- ter pipe) about every half hour or so. It seems to have started after I fixed a bad connection from m hot water heater to the tank. this is air in my lines can you tell me how I might get it out? ANSWER: 1 am ipe E a pocket due to a h. Cold-water lines leading to tank should slant upward to- ward the tank and those from the or not between the water heat- and |deck of our er and the tank was done QUESTION: We are having ble keeping paint on the canvas r front Jorch, It is five years old and ea Spring we have applied a coat of dec enamel. This coating cracks and in some places has peeled down to the canvas. Is there anything we can use to keep the paint from and crac) ? ANSWER: If there is a kitchen or bathroom under this deck, ex- cessive humidity might be pene- trating through the ceiling to the canvas and the resultant moisture would be likely to cause peeling. One remedy is to install vents or ventilating louvers in the side walls in order to ventilate the space tween the ceiling and the deck. If there is no indication of moisture in the area described, then I sus- pect that the canvas has been given: too many thick coats of paint. To correct this situation it will be necessary to take off the present paint and refinish with two thin coats of any good standard brand of deck or porch enamel. I'd ad- vise waiting until spring to do this |of if the temperature your locality drops below 50 degrees, painting IN THE HOME WITH RUTH WYETH SPEARS These two life-like toys are fun to make and fun to play with. COLD BEDROOM QUESTION: Some. time ago we purchase an old-fashioned use and discovered that one bedroom is impossible to heat. This room has one radiator and the Deating System is hot water fired by ofl bedroom is located above the front porch. To be more explicit, the floor of this room is the ceiling the front porch. Can you sug- gest any solution other than' en- closing the porch below? AN R: The space between the floor and porch ceiling can be insulated with a blown-in insulating, batt or blanket insula- tion can be placed between the joists and then the whole area can be covered with plywood or pine lumber. COLD BUNGALOW ATTIC QUESTION: The attic of my brick bungalow is only used for storage and the floor is insulated. But occasionally I do go up there in winter and it does get prett cold. Do you think I should yd up the louvers to keep the attic from getting so cold? ANSWER: If you covered up the louvers your attic would certainly stay a little warmer, but as soon as you stop the circulation of air (which this would do) vou are in- viting condensation, which can cause plenty of damage on your walls below. If you want your at- tic to stay warmer, I would sug- gost that you consider insulating completely. RCAF Artist Hanas Portrait LONDON (CP)--An RCAF art- ist, Lac. (CP)--Bell Tele- hone officials said Thursday that ong - distance lines to Sarnia, knocked out by snow and winds Monday, now have been repaired but will be in constant danger until warmer weather arrives. R. G. Dillane, Bell manager said some lines have up to four inches of ice on them; '""There is still very great danger until that ice melts. The wires may break anywhere under weight of ice and if a strong wind developed there would be a lot of breaks," he said. Local circuits in Sarnia still were being repaired and "it will be quite a long job to get them back in service." Nearly 4,000. telephones were cut off originally. Langar, RCAF material base in Nottinghamshire, Ledson has twice had his work exhibited by the Royal Canadian Academy.
