S.: It's grand that you approve your sweetheart's silvery locks, which flatter her type and enhance her charm. But don't be 80 cross with the other types who, for one reason or another, feel impelled to experiment with changes of hair color. Nowadays the majority of wom- en who dye their hair aren't strug- gling to falsify their age. Mostly t is the younger element that leans to artifice, changing from brunette to blonde to red head, in candid pursuit of a prettier effect. Or one which helps (they feel) to create the illusion of interesting individuality they want. Moreover, believe it or not, sil- very tints are currently popular with youthful women, too yo as yet to produce a gray thate naturaly. A flock of new silvery tints has been launched for them, and may I testify from observa- tion that the results can be definit ly glamorizing--adding a quality of eye-appeal that wasn't apparent before. SILVERY GIVES ELEGANCE For example I think of a youth- ful assistant in a shop where I've traded for several years. Prior to summer's vacation she was a person whose voice and courtesy were pleasing; but her appear- ance was vague in memory. On her return in the fall she was subtly different, eye-catching, but with elegance; softer, more com- , more attractive somehow Re-educate Your Food Habits In Order to Control Weight By IDA JEAN KAIN The biggest obstacle in the path of the dieter appears to be ap) tite. An overweight writes t- fully, 'I know you do not much stock in appetite curbers, but please tell me which one is the t harmful. I feel that if 1 could take something to cut my appetite I could stay on a diet and lose some of this awful fat." Take a deep breath . . . answer to this letter may be a sudden shock. Appetit» curbers are not the same as appetite depres- sant drugs, which can be obtained only by prescription. The prime action of such drugs is the stimul- ation of the nervous system. The true depressants are Benzedrine and Dexedrine and, because of their secondary effects, not every- one can take them. Such drugs should be used only under strict medical pSupetvision. Now to appetite curbers. It is important to realize that the biggest part of reduci is done in your mind. Hunger a phys- instinct, but appetite is greatly influenced by mental desire. So long as you allow your mind to dwell on the foods that are back ur overweight, you will be against hot of continually s breads, assorted sweets and rich take | dishes--despite an appetite curber. And the change had favor- ably affected her personality as well as her looks, because of ap- proval voiced by others, even in- cluding her children, who call her beautiful this way. The moral of this soliloquy seems to be that you have a point, in raising a toast to silvery- aired dolls who seek no help from the paint pot. How can You use an appetite curber to help you reduce health- fully? By eating the protective foods first--eggs; lean meat, fish or fowl; milk or cheese; green and yellow vegetables; fruits, in- cluding a citrus fruit or juice; and whole grain or enriched bread. You cannot eat adequate amounts of these foods and have your favorite high calorie foods too--and reduce. So make up your mind to curb our appetite for the non-essential attening foods, and you can con- trol your weight beautifully: In short, change your food habits. "MARY HAWORTH'S MAIL About to Marry Attractive Woman But Disapproves of Her Hair-Dye Dear Mary Haworth: May a mere male express his disapproval of this hair-dye fad which is cur- rently rampant. I'd like to give some advice to the girls. Just when do they think they are fool- 2 i a gray coiffure on a woman, I like it. Yes, I definitely admire' a woman who has the cour- age to be her age, instead of try- ing to camouflage it. Of course I realize there are competent beauty operators who can make a plain ane in her late 30s, 40s or 50s feel 'like she is 25. But when the to must be a messy business. The other day a woman well into her forties came into my of- fice on urgent business, she said. But her flirtatious glances and coy remarks made it apparent that her errand wasn't too urgent. How- ever, what annoyed me most was her appearance. Her hair was dyed pitch black and she looked as hard as a bar room pick-up. For the sad part is, dyed hair simply draws attention to the lines, coars- ening and blemishes on an older woman's face--if she has them. HALO SOFTENS FACE In case our readers are labeling me "an old fogey, so repugnant that no woman would want him," I submit that I am a widower, 47, a colege graduate, prosperous in business, with some money saved, I am average size, not potbellied, sawed-off or bald-headed. WomEN CHILD GUIDANCE Choose Children's Toys Suited To Their Age By CLEVELAND MYE America will spend about $450, 000,000 for toys this Christmas sea- son. Though a few children of our nation won't, alas, receive any toys for Christmas, a lot of other children will get far too many, rendering them selfish and unap- preciative, careless in the use of these playthings, even scatter- brained. As we parents get more sense, we will buy good playthings for the child the year around instead of showering him with so many all at once. Parents should sit down together and draw up a budget they can afford and from which their child can profit during the next year, agreeing on the spending allot- ment for Christmas. SUITED TO DEVELOPMENT Choose only the toy suited to your child's age and development, neither too old nor too young for him, and those he can operate him- self and enjoy with others of his age. There are many wonderful playthings on the market, but those which sell best are often the least useful toys. Parents, like children, are too often lured by paint and novelty and will pay fabuluous prices for playthings which have only temporary appeal. What often attracts most is a toy which can do things itself and ar- ouse amazement for its mechan- ical likeness to a person. As a rule, the more of these qualities it has, the more expensive it is and the less lasting and useful as a plaything. Before buying a toy, ask yourself, "To how many uses will it be put? How much will it stimulate imagination, creation and invention? For how long will it be enjoyed?" In general, playthings should fur- ther good muscular development, develop finer coordination, faster play with other children, encour- age practice in reasoning and imagination, stimulate creative- ness, promote satisfaction through achievement, and afford hours of wholesome fun. UP TO 18 MONTHS Up to 18 months, the baby needs objects to reach for, gras , Nl, handle, which are too big for him to swallow; push-and-pul toys, things to put into one another, sound-producing toys. From two to four, he needs more push-and-pull toys as incentives to locomotion; and things to put to- gether for manipulative skills, and eye-hand coordination. Also, places ambitious, extremely intelligent and endowed with the qualities which make for executive leader- ship. and Development 1 to climb, wagons to pull, ropes to swing, big balls to catch, mate- rials for pounding dolls and ac- cessories, unbreakable dishes, and lots of blocks for building; cray- ons for drawing and coloring and large sheets of paper; sound toys. sandbox, and. sand tools; sm autos and trucks to use with build- blocks, kiddie car, large wagon, sled, tricycle, and so on. FROM FOUR TO SIX The child from four to six needs toys for increasing muscular dex- terity, such as equipment, slides, more wheel toys. He has great in- terest in costumes and uniforms; creative materials, such as paints, finger paints, mol sets, easy weaving, blunt - poin scissors, hammer, saw, boards; also toys use with block-building and autos, a crane, planes, boats, farm anim- als, zoo animals; ad various con- struction toys--dump trucks, road- making toys, and so forth. As you study your child and his needs and inspect toys for sale carefully, you will choose many other good playthings. Don't over- look good books and children's magazines from which to read to the young child. Edina's Royal Mile To Get Face-Lifting Important building operations are going on in the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare link e Castle and the Palace of Hi ouse in Edinburgh, which has seen more history per square yard than any other part of Scotland. Some of the centuries-old buildings are being partially rebuilt; the front- ages with thelr difficult-to-imitate stonework are 'being retained in a strengthened form while behind them new walls will carry the main stresses and strains. In this 'way tall houses which have stood unaltered since the 15th and 16th centuries will continue to give the Royal Mile its distinctive atmosphere but with the assurance that, reinforced by the skill of the modern builder, they will serve Skill has been a tradition with us for over a quarter of a century.
