THN DANY TOMS SATWITE, Seterder, Doldber 05, 1008 9 } | Build, Repair or Remodel Your Home T FIRST AID TO THE RAILING HOUSE By ROGER C. WHITMAN PATCHING A ROCKING CHAIR QUESTION: Is it possible to re- pair a tear in a vinyl plastic seat cover on a rocking chair? ANSWER: iring is best done by first removing the cover so that you can get at the under side. Cut a patch of fairly sturdy fabric large enough to extend an inch or so beyond the tear in evry direction. Coat this patch with a good household cement. Then, fit- ting the edges of the tear together ca. fully, stick this patc' under the torn spot. When the cement has dried, fasten the cover back on the chair. It may easily be possible that the cover need not be com- letely removed, but only enough D ve working access to the spot mended. FORMULA FOR WHITEWASH QUESTION: How do you make whitewash? I want to do a picket fence. Answer; forty of quick lime is slaked with boiling water a kept Suvered. It is then strain- screening. A oy salt dissolved in warm water is added, along with 3 pounds of rice put in boiling water and boiled to a thin paste, one-half pound of Spanish whiting (powder- vd), and one pound of clear glue Ussolved in warm -water. 'After a thorough mixing, it should stand br several days. It is used as hot 8 possible. ELECTROLYSIS IN WATER PIP- of RUESTION: Will galvanized pi- pig be affected by electrolysis, whn old pipe is combined with ney copper tubing? We wish to inskM additional plumbing fixtur- es \nd connect them with copper tubhg. I know that such a system in sit water would result in elec- trolpis and iron pipe would be- come spongy. ANWER: The lectrolytic ac- tion } present when two dissimi- lar mtals are joined in the pres- ence ¥ water. Of course this conditin is greatly accelerated by the prsence of salt water. One seems to be a crack in the ce- ment between twe of the blocks next to the floor. The other is where th: cement floor joins the cement blocks. Is there anything that' will satisfactiorily seal these places or at least stop the leaks temporarily? ANSWER: To repair the crack in the mortar joint between the concrete blocks, rake out the old mortar to a depth of a half inch or more. Brush out all loose parti- cles and wet the inne. surfaces |P? with water. Pack tie space with a fairly stiff, but workable, mix- ture of one part Portland cement and three parts of clean, coarse sand. Keep the patch damp for several days to prevent the mor tar from drying out too fast. Large detailed drawings on the pattern show each step from making the frame to the finish- ed job as it appears in the sketch. Pattern also carries perspective drawings with diagrams to show how six and three quarters yards of forty-eight-inch-wide material may be cut to make a cover for a full length thirty-nine-inch wide bed and covering for the front of the bedding compartment. After brushing out al loose particles, wet the concrete surfaces and pack with a mortar mixture as suggested above. Hot tar or asphalt can be substituted for the mortar. If the latter ma- Jena vasd be swe the groove is prefec ry and clean. SILENCING A SQUEAKY TABLE QUESTION: One side of = din- ing room table squeaks, although it is only five years old. Hi any suggestions? I have urin| yay in the cracks, but it didn't help any. ANSWER: Squeaks in furniture indicate looseness at the joints. Usually such joints can be tight- ened by loca the proper screws and securing them as firmly as possible. If the joints are glued, regluing is necessary. STAIR COVERING QUESTION: We have six steps of plain stained hardwood leading upstairs. What could I use to cov- er them, with accent on ease of keeping them clean? I do not care for the conventional carpeting. ANSWER: Vinyl plastic tile should fill your bill nicely. It is very durable, easy to clean, and comes in a considerable variety of colors. TILE OVER OLD LINOLEUM? QUESTION: Can floor tile be laid satisfactorily over old inlaid linoleum? ANSWER: It is rarely possible to get good results, because the chances are that constant traffic in various spots has worn low places in the linoleum. The floor should be perfectly smooth and flat for tile. ATTIC LOUVRES QUESTION: What disadvantage or bad affect would there be by placing a cover over the attic lou- vers and stopping circulation of cold air? We feel that by doing so we could decrease the amount of fuel used. ANSWER: Closing the louvres in the wintertime may lead to trouble when, and if, moisture or condensation occurs on the under- side of the roof boards. Lacking ventilation, moisture and conden- sation would accumulate in the form of frost, and, when a thaw would set in, the frost would melt, running down the ceiling and into the walls. This causes damage to plaster, paint and wallpaper. Clos- ing the louvers would have prac- tically no effect in increasing the temperature in the attic and would have no affect on the amount of fuel used. Gubernatorial Contest Will Show U.S. Trend D. HAIOLD OLIVER Ww. GTON (AP) -- Election time rolls aromd again in the United States Tusday with Repub- licans fairly conident of retaining control in the moi significant con- 'tests -- the gowrnorship and a House of Representatives seat in New Jersey. Democrats are nit giving up but neither are they counting too heavily on winnitg in New Jersey. They naturally wald welcome an- other upset on tp of their vic- tory in the normilly Republican Wisconsin Ninth Dstrict Oct. 13. If they 'should win they say the Republicans had ktter be pre- Pied for losing ontrol of the ouse of Representiives in 1954. The Democrats asert they will retain the only othr governor- ship in Tuesday's votng--in Virg- inia--and they expect o capture a Slose one for the New York mayor- ty. The New Jersey copests, plus a - cornered rat for New York mayor, an unusualy hot fight over the Virginia goernorship, and scattered municipal elections highlight the off-year baloting. LEGALIZE BINGO Also, six states will vde on 35 constitutional amendments and re- ferenda. These include a jroposal on Tennessee's ballot to abdish the poll tax, and referenda nm New Jersey to legalize bingo ad raf- fles to exempt veterais' wi- dows from taxation. Three of the more inteesting mayoral fights outside of New York are those in Pittsburgh, Clewland and Little Rock, Ark. ? In Pittsburgh Mayor David L. Lawrence, Democrat, is seeking a third four-year term against Leon- ard P. Kane, 55 - year - old real estate appraiser. The city hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1933. State Senator Anthony Celeb- reeze, backed by Governor Frank J. Lausche, is the Democratic can-- didate for mayor of Cleveland, the post left vacant by the appointment of Mayor Thomas A. Burke, Dem- ocrat, to the U. S. Senate seat of the late Republican senator Robert A. Taft. William J. McDermott, former juvenile judge, is the Re- publican candidate. In Little Rock where the Repub- licans won two years ago for the first time in 50 years, the Demo- crats are making a strong effort to unseat Mayor Pratt Remmel. Alderman Aubre, Kerr is their nominee. 35 SENATORS Politicians will be looking for all possible signs in Tuesday's voting that might help in sizing up the congressional and state elections next 'year with the Senate and House divided closer than they have been since 1930. Thirty-five senators, 435 House members and 33 governors will be chosen next year. There now are 30 Republican and 18 Democratic governors. New Jersey's sixth District is the only one holding a U. S. House election Tuesday. This, and a Calif- ornia special election Nov. 10, are to fill vacant seats formerly held by Republicans. The upset election of a Democrat in Wisconsin's Ninth District Oct. AJAX LUMBER co. HICKORY ST. WHITBY 13 made the House line-up: Re- publicans 218; Democrats 214; in- dependent 1; vacancies 2. Wisconsin's Ninth is a farm dis- trict which always before had gone Republican. The Democratic vic- tory liere was taken generally as an expression of discontent with ad- ministration farm policy. New Jer- sey's Sixth District is industrial with many wealthy su' urbanites. California's vacant House seat is in the Los Angeles District. National issues have been largely lacking in the current campaigns. Direct Planes To London, Eng. Built of 3% - inch plywood and raised from floor level on recessed base of 2 x 4's faced with Y4-inch fir Plywood, this unit pro- vides ample storage space for china, silverware, linen, etc., and has a centre opening through to the kitchen counter for greater convenience in serving meals. Shelves on top holding plates and glassware are also conveni- ently open to both kitchen and din- ing room. The hinged door at lower t opens down to form a serving counter. It is attached with long piano hinges and held level with a chain or metal support similar to a card table leg brace. The linen and silverware draw- ers at lower left fill an otherwise unusable corner in the U-shaped kitchen counter on the other side of the cabinet. Even Fake Pearls Are Product of Sea Pearls on a costume jewelry counter may be artificial, but like real ones, their gem qualities come from the sea. True pearls are manufactured by oysters or mussels. Artificial pearls, says the National Geogra- phic Society, are glass or plastic beads coated with essence d'orient --pearl essence--made from the sil- very scales of small fish. Before World War II, the scales used came from slender little carp found in the rivers of Europe. Since the war, the industry has found a way to use herring scales as well. YOUNG HERRING Young herring from the Bay of Fundy in Canada have been di- verted from the breakfast table to artificial pearl factories in nearby Maine and Canada, Similarly part of the Norwegian herring catch goes to a Norwegian factory which can produce 12,000 necklaces, ear- rings and bracelets a week. Artificial pearls can be good copies in color and shape, but they invariably lack true pearl lustre. Real lustre comes from light reflected and refracted by the bleak, a: disturb the natural pearl industry, |4.1 but the world gem market almost went into a panic in the 1920's when Japan began to export cul- tured pearls in quantity. Fortunate- ly experts found ways, including X-ray, to tell the difference be- tween the wholly natural and the cultured products. The Japanese learned pearl cul ture from the Chinese, who had used the process as early as the 13th century. Dating from this per- jod are small Chinese-made pearl images of Buddha. The first per- fectly spherical cultured pearl was produced by the Japanese only in 1909 Basically, it is a simple matter to stimulate the formation of a cul- tured pearl. The culturist merely puts a small object into the shell of an oyster or mussel and lets the bivalve do the rest. But in actual practice, the pearl is apt to be of poor quality unless the tiny "factory" is carefully fed, nursed through sicknesses and guarded in underwater cages. So onerous and expensive is the pro- cess that the Japanese have no competitors outside their country today. many layers of irid t nacre, products of years of oyster labor. When they are manufacturing pearls, oysters are intent upon com- fort, not necklaces. Finding a for- eign object within their shells, they cover it with smooth nacre to pre- vent irritation. The first fine imitation pearl produced in Western Europe was made in the 17th century by Jac- quin, a rosary maker of Paris. Coating the inner surface of a thin, opalescent glass sphere first with parchment sizing, then with pear) essence, he filled the hollow middle with white wax.
