They and their parents have provided a good lab- oratory for me. NO EATING SCENES During these years, I have ob- served almost no eating scenes by these grandchildren. Their parents have assumed that the children do their own eating and eat when they are hungry, and the young- sers seem nearly always to be hungry at the proper times. they ha oa big enough to as ve n en sit and eat comfortably from a high chair, have eaten with the whole family. You who have come from big families know what an ex- tension table is. INTERESTING FAMILY GROUPS Having an aggregation of fifteen or twenty persons from babies to grandparents makes an interesting family Eroup. It hardly would be interesting all the adults were fighting with several of the young- sters over their eating. But I'm able to report that ours has usually been a peace table. Of course, some parents who have a scene at every mealtime over just one youngster from two to five may not believe the fore- joing. They have only my word or it. But they should consider that scenes over eating can more eagily arise in a small group than in a larger one. With so many children present, hearty eating can become contagious, and attention by the adults doesn't tend to centre on just one child. Too, in the case of a large group, each person pres- ent can grow so interested in every- else as not to pick on any particular child. Macko Jr. MARY HAWORTH'S MAIL Husband's Extra-Marital Affair Constitutes a Family Problem Dear Mary Haworth: I have been married *2 years to a fine upstand- ing man whom I always considered my "rock of Gibraltar" until re- cently. Recently I discovered that, for the past two years, 2 'has had a strong attraction to the wife of his oldest and best friend, a couple we've known 14 years. I had suspected something during that time and foolishly expressed my jealousy, hoping Phil would deny it, as he did. The man went abroad last June and his wife stayed here two months, then flew to join him. Phil's sorrow at her leaving brought things to the sur- face. He told me all about it--a friendly affection including kisses, but no affair, he insists. He says he has always loved me but wasn't happy at home, and felt the need of lighthearted comradeship. For some years, prior to two years ago, I was briefly attracted to other men, never letting them know it, as I couldn't be unfaithful actually. However, in that time I was less than sympathetic to Phil's society and interests. I wz. a good mother and housekeeper--but a "good" wife can be very tiresome, Skill has been a tradition with us for over a quarter of a century. LEWIS... OPTOMETRISTS 3 KING ST. E DIAL 5-0444 I suppose. Hence Phil's disloyalty. After Ann's departure, Phil was very morose at first, but after sev- eral long talks and confidences, of which we'd had so few for years, he seems more like the lover I knew years ago. I have been chas- tised and shall be more understand- ing and companionable in future, but it seems hard fo. me to forget. I keep harking back, asking ques- tions, ete., which isnt' good, I know. How call I trust him again? Am I making too much of the whole thing? Can you clear the air, in what might be a happy home? S.E. You were taking John's love too much for granted in those days; so much so, indeed, that your fleeting thoughts of infidelity with other men were motivated by uncon-| scious desire for relief from him, | I think. The drain to his self-esteem would be injurious, "so that involuntarily he would wel- come reassurance from another wo- man, at which point Ann played friendship false. She was the more deliberate, more conscious offender in the triangle, I think. And pos- sibly her husband was tacitly forc- ing the issue, in pulling up stakes to live abroad. What John needs, evidently is a real love relationship with some- body, and given opportunity for it in marriage, he is disposed to be fully faithful. However, he rightly feels that, reciprocal love is synony- mous with mutual warm awarenes a disposition you are only now acquiring.
