'OSHAWA BEST AS TEAM Oshawa Merchants continue to hold their team batting edge in the Inter-County with a .282 mark, 18 points better than second - place Waterloo, while the chang- ing pattern of the individual bat- ting race has seen new leaders take over in both the hitting and runs-batted - in division. Kitchener's Dick Welker with .348 has taken over as individual leader. He is one point better (among regulars at bat 100 or more times) than Ed Steele, of Galt, who has .347. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR St. Thomas Elgins play Oshawa Merchants here at the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium tonight _ and despite the fact that "half the town" is away on holidays, we fully expect to see a good crowd on hand. In the first place, there isn't much doing in the way of sports entertainment on the local *sandlot"' diamonds these nights and the citizens who are still here, are anxious to take in a good ball game -- and this one should be that. Secondly, not only are Osh- awa Merchants making a valiant bid to cop a playoff berth in this tough Inter-County League, in their first season in such a top-notch competition but they have con- vinced the local baseball enthusi- asts that the brand of ball being played, is really worth seeing. We know of a lot of local sport en- thusiasts who would much rather watch the Merchants in Inter - County action than travel afield to see other pro baseball. That game here Wednesday night didn't hurt the prestige of the Merchants either. In fact, it convinced a lot of die-hards just what a good calibre of baseball is being played in the Inter-County League. The Springfield Cubs, a full - fledged Class AAA ball club in the International League, was well - beaten here by Osh- awa Merchants, beaten in every department of the game, too. If the Merchants continue to hit as well and get the same brand of circle, the first division and playoff section. Latest official league statistics reveal that Osh- awa Merchants are leading the league in team hitting with Butch Lawing standing about fourth in the league's individual batting race and leading the entire circle in RBI's (Runs Batted In) a very important department, also in two base hits and near the top also in walks," Kitchener's Dick Welker is leading the Inter- County as top batter of the league and has also set a new record in stolen bases. When St. Thomas Elgins visit Oshawa Merchants tonight, it's a special event for the ball fans. To- night is a special prize night, with 13 (is that your lucky number?) valuable attendance prizes. The full list appears in'an advertise- ment elsewhere on the sport pages but Ahe list includes 25 gals. gasoline, a couple of sport shirts, an electric fan, tickets to theatre, wrestling, stock car races, golf balls, vouchers, windshield washer, bouquet of flowers, 2 collection of records, etc. These will all be given away tonight to the lucky baseball fans. On top of that, the ball game itself should be a real attraction tonight, since the EI- gins have been knocking off all opposition lately and while still on the bottom of the heap, are by no means considered "weak sisters". On top of that, the Merchants sim- ply have to win these two games if they are going to get into the playoffs. Don't know who Manager Billy Turk will send to the mound to- night but his pitching staff has had an easy week and all should be ready. We rather expect that it will be Bud Ripplemeyer to- night with Bill Hanrahan sched- uled to go on Saturday night, when St. Thomas Eigins play here again, Manager Tommy STOCK-CAR Race-of-the-Year Oshawa Raceways vs. Pinecrest TUES. NITE Oshawa Raceways White, a London Majors star for many years and a London home- brew, is almost certain to start for the Elgins either tonight or Saturday night. On Saturday night, an added attraction will be the presentation of the '"'most popular player award", Burns' Jewellers special honor, a "King of the Diamond" diamond ring. Local fans have cast their bal- lots in the past week and the winner will be announced tomor- row night and the presentation made at the game. But in the meantime, the Merchants have to play St. Thomas tonight first and win. that one. . In addition to the good showing being made by our Oshawa repre- sentatives at. the various bathing beaches in Ontario's holiday re- sorts this week and fine perform- ances turned in by local members of the Oshawa lawn bowling fra- ernity, we find other'local athletes performing with distinction. Donna Dodwell, 14-year-old daughter of Cec. Dodwell, one of the long- standing stalwarts of Oshawa Ten- nis Club, competed in the Toron- to Tennis tourney on Wednesday in both the Junior girls and Jun- ior ladies' divisions and although defeated by more experienced op- ponents, made a fine impression with the observers. * This local youngster is going to be a real tennis star in the near future. In the Ontario amateur golf tourna- ment at Brantford this week, Ross Gibbs of Oshawa was beaten out by Red Heron, former Toronto hockey and softball star, while Bruce Bradley was just nosed out by Jack Birthwhistle, of Burlington, in a keen match. They've got a triple / feature attraction at Oshawa Motor Race-/ ways for this Saturday night. Ted Gilbert is going to be on hand again, in response to a big demand from the fans who want to see the spectacular roll-over. Gilbert runs his car (two wheels) up and over a ramp and then cramps his steering wheel and deliberately turns his car over --and over and over. It's really something to see and this dare- devil driver puts on a real show.. They're starting a new "popular driver" contest on Saturday night also, with a mammoth at- tendance prize for the lucky vot- er. And then, on top of the re- gular, program of stock car races, featuring Toronto and Osh- awa-district drivers, there's to be a special challenge race betwen a team of Normie Brioux and Ted Race, againSt Ted Hogan and George Bowers. This should be something to see because it's no secret that there's no love lost between these rival stock car aces. Promoter Hartley HOCKEY GROUPS DECIDED Quebec Citadels Join Junior "A" Windsor Gets Senior OHA Berth TORONTO (CP)--Two new clubs entered the select Ontario Hockey Association family Thursday, qgne riding in on a glittering bundle" of cash and the other clutching five promissory notes. Quebec Citadelles, ousted from the Quebec Junior Amateur Hockey Association last spring, were wel- comed into the OHA Junior A set- up when they posted a total of $45, 000 in guarantees to behave. Wind- sor, Ont., was promised a berth in the Senior A circuit if the five clubs which Thursday nodded in approval agree to back the verbal agreement on the dotted line. Quebec posted a $25,000 bond as a guarantee that it would finish out the schedule. In addition the Cita- delles will pay OHA clubs $1,000 each time the Ontario: boys ven- ture into the province--twice each season--and add another $1,000 for Schipper and Dave Goldberg claim this is the best program they've presented to stock car racing fans this season and it cel looks to be-just that. BRIGHT BITS -- We'll tell you more about it tomorrow but Pat Milosh has a special "three main bouts" card lined up for this com- ing Tuesday night -- it's his 6th anniversary as the local wrestling promoter . .. And out at Oshawa Raceways Tuesday night, there's to be a special program with the rival drivers from Pinecrest Speed ways opposing the Oshawa-Toron- to CNE drivers. More about that tomorrow also ...Oshawa Lake- landers, enjoying a holiday right now after winning Pheir hectic city championship series in Inter. "A" ladies softball, will enter the first round of PWSU playoffs, against either Belleville or Trenton girls, on August 12, with the second (and third if necessary) game or games here on Saturday, August 15... Oshawa Merchants have 12 more league games to play, half of them at home. They played 12 home games last month -- a record for even the crowded Inter-County schedule . . . Warm isn't it -- but n't worry, they'll have ice in, the Oshawa Arena in less than 50 days! each of the three games played there by OHA teams. Th Citadelles dropped out of JAHA play last year during a play- off dispute and were banned from participating in further Quebec play. They were allowed to com- pete in the Memorial Cup semi- finals, but fell before the Memorial Cup champion Barrie Flyers. The Windsor application came from William Butcher, president of the Windsor Arena, which up until now has operated the ill-fated Windsor Spitfires of the OHA Jun- ior circuit. Gobourg's Famous Galloping Ghosts Drilling At Ajax AJAX (Times-Gazette Staff Re- porter) The sight of about twenty rugby football players going through their paces attracted the attention of a number of Ajax residents last evening. The Cobourg Galloping Ghosts have received permission to hold regular drill here and they are taking full advantage. Coach Art West, a former Argo player gave his men a real work out. Drills will continue each evening until the fall schedule starts on Aug. 29 at Peterboro. Mr. Fred Dufton, President and manager of the team said Ajax was chosen for training purposes as it is a midway point for his players many of whom come from Toronto. There is no residence rule in the O.R.F.U. and Mr. Dafton would be interested in seeing any Ajax foot- ball players turn out for practice. Drills start at 7 p.m. and con- tinue until darkness. RUNNER DIES AT STADIUM HAMILTON (CP) -- Charles E. Morton, 58, a former marathon runner, collapsed and died at civie stadium Wednesday while -jogging around the track. A member of the Hamilton Olympic Club, he was one of the most -active distance runners in Canada until retiring from competition 10 years ago. Nia- gara Falls is also reported to want Windsor in. However, they must back today's approval in writing and submit it to OHA headquarters before Wind- sor can really count itself in. It is understood that both Brant- ford and Stratford oppose the Windsor entry. Today, the National Hockey League and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association get together for talks. The question of the Quebec jun- ior circuit, still suspended by the CAHA for refusing to accept the Citadelles back into their fold, is top priority today. However, the JAHA is still bitter over Quebec's move. 2a8esAER "Rgy i Lt a I Tt LT I TT PE Sy S828] JBEIJRSBBSS Pk fk 6) oh bk pk a8 - [args NaS» -- -- 2SREERRraBratal Sel8¥%waSaoa Pg | Daisy Chips Hits Port Perry Pay Dirt "Daisy Chips', a five-year-old mare owned by Albert Wallace of North Oshawa and driven by Allan Brown of North Oshawa, came up with a pair of heat victories at Port Perry on Civic Holiday, in the 2:25 class. Observers who have watched both teams at practice feel the Canadians can dispose of the Gar- rido brothers--Reynaldo, 19, and Orlando, 22--in the opening singles and quickly set up a 2-0 lead for Canada. Many think Canada has a good chance of duplicating the 5-0 vic- tory scored over Cuba here two years ago. The Garrido youngsters weren't in the cast then, and they - are pretty much an unknown quan tty hereabouts in competitive ten- nis. But captain Ricardo Morales of the Cuban team says his boys are full of ambition and competitive spirit and have no qualms about meeting the favored Canadians. The draw Thursday brought Ro- chon against Reynaldo Garrido ig the first singles and Main against Orlando in the second. The Cubans have been working hard to overcome a handicap they will face right at the start--grass courts. They are used tn hard nurt play, whereas the Canadians, fresh from a 3-2 victory over Mexico, are right at home on the Mount Royal Tennis club grass. If Canada takes both opening singles, it is almost a certainty that Paul Willey of Vancbuver, making his debut this year as a Davis Cup team member," will be paired with Main.
