"The Gold en Text The presence of the Lord. «Children, obey your parents in the bord, for this is sight. Honor thy futher and mother." =Ephesians 6:18. SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Love And Kindness Make Households Christlike By NEWMAN CAMPBELL "BE IT ever so humble, there's p place lke home," the song ays. Most of us are able to say , those words sincerely, for e have come from happy homes nd maintain the same ide als vhen we have left our childhood bodes. This has been true in all gen- tions in all lands, and the me ideals that Paul stresses in his letters to the Ephesians and plossians is just as true today as t was in those ancient times, al- hough homes of today are far Hifferent in many lands to what they were when Paul wrote istles. Times have changed but the deals of happy Christian homes the same, and the same prob- pms face us today which were resent in the homes of Paul's How appropriate are the fi rst 0 verses of those assigned for oday's lesson: "See then that ye walk circum- gpectly, not as fools, but as wise, deeming the time, because the Hays are evil." All the world is in turmoil to jay--and how much more world here is known today and ery much more we know about than was known by even the most learned of Paul's day! Has our wisdom and conduct with the centuries? Have grown more Christlike in our itude toward others? Are our homes Sappiet than they were in hose fi days? In a t many countires, conditions in homes have proved -- but what of the spiritual tmosphere? This I believe, that the majority of homes there love and understanding between husband and wife and between parents and children, and Paul's deal of the happy home is at past partially realized. Good homes mean so much to world. In them our children trained to be kind, forgiving considerate of others -- all thers so that eventually hrough struggle and sacrifice, Jeace shall be brought to the lv- im- However, to return to Paul and his advice to the Ephesians and olossians. In this day when proken homes, due to divorce, are p much a problem and are the ary cause of so much of our uvenile delinquency and crime, e do well to ponder his words: "Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the ord". -- Col. 3:18. "Husbands love your wives, and not bitter against them."'--Col. :19. Many young couples omit the '"'subjection" or obedience of the wife to the husband from the marriage service as they feel that it makes the wife feel inferior and the husband usually prefers that they two should work out their re tions with each other with love nd understanding. "Children, obey your parents in things, for this is well pleas- g in the Lord. "Fathers, provoke not your phildren, thdt they be not = dis- rouraged."--Col. 3:20 21. "Honor thy father and mother, hat it may be well with thee. "And Ie fathers, provoke not our children to wrath: but nur- jure them in the chastening and dmonition of the Lord." In Paul's day, servants were pften slaves, but Paul's admonition jo the master and to the servant, also pertinent to labor problems petween management and labor in ay. , Masters are told to be con- his | ing kindness, mutu; derate of their servants. and t-~ rvants are advised to work 2 4 "with good will, doing service as unto the Lord, and not unto men: knowing that whatsoever good thing each one doeth, the same shall he receive again from the Lord, whether he bond or free," because in heaven "there is no respect of persons." "Masters, render unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven." : What constitutes a happy Chris- tian home? It is one in which parents love each other, where children are trained to obey their parents in an atmosphere of lov- understand- ing and respect. It is where sweet harmonies are made, where all at- 'tend church together, pray to gether in "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord." Teachers, talk to the children about their own homes, showing them what is 'the part they must play in order to achieve a truly Christian home. Woman To Sit rv In Cabinet If Tories Win WALLACEBURG (CP)--A Pro- gressive Conservative administra- tion would give Canada its first woman member of a federal cab- inet, George Drew said Friday. The Progressive Conservative leader, campaigning in southwest- ern Ontario, expressed the hope that all nine women candidates of his party in the general election will be elected Aug. 10. He said it would be a good thing for Canada to have more feminine members of the Commons. Expectations are that Mrs. Ellen Fairclough, member for Hamilton West in the old Parliament, would be the woman member of a Pro- gressive Conservative cabinet, pos- sibly as minister of labor. BURY How often do we hear the excuse "he did it in a fit of anger." And someone is murdered, or maimed; some causes lost; some heart is broken; all because anger was not controlled. Violent anger is always the out- growth of lesser angry moods; a behaviour pattern that has its be- ginning in infancy, and which ac- cumulates in intensity with freq- uent and unrestricted practice. Fierce anger distorts the person- ality and destroys much that is wholesome and beautiful in life's deepest relationships. No wowder it was listedd as one of the "Seven Deadly Sins"! ; : The Bible on a number of oc- casions warns against this evil be- haviour. "Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil" (Psalm 37-31). "He that is soon angry dealith foolishly' (Prov. 14-7). "Be not hasty in they spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools" (Ecclesiastics 7-9). But the most pointed quotation on this theme in the Old Testament is found in Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." Jesus warned his followers to beware the folly of malicious ang- er: "But I say unto you, that who- soever is angry with his brother without cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother 'Raca' shall be Uncontrolled Anger Can Spoil Life - Your Own and Others home or of a fellowship group. If we 'would live triumphantly we must learn to conquer and control this demoniac passion or it will ruin us. On the other hand, it is well to recognize that anger is not wholly an evil thing. Controlled and direct- ed through the channels of right- eous indignation, anger can prove to be very beneficial. Jesus him- self demonstrated anger of this type on more than one occasion. Read Mark 3:1-6 where Jesus was | provoked to anger by quibbling Pharisees who would have pre- vented Him from healing the man with the withered hand on the Sab- bath day. The most celebrated example of His righteous anger flaring into action is revealed in the incident where He took a scourge and drove the money changers out of the temple. (Mark 11:15-17: John 2: 13-17.) Following His example, cour- ageous men and women, stirred by righteous indignation, have direct- ed an aroused anger to work for the eradication of many evils which have assailed mankind, such as slavery, child labour, disease. Nourished selfishly within, anger can become a consuming fire: but brandished aloft in the service of others it can b hall Storses of Famous Hymns by Horace B. He also composed tunes for many hymns besides those which he made himself. One of his Brooklyn parishioners Mrs. Annie Hawkes whose talent for writing he praised and encouraged during his ministry there was the author years later of the popular hymn "I Need Thee Every Hour". Long after he left Brooklyn Dr. Lowry continued to correspond with Mrs. Hawks about her writ- ing. One day she sent him a letter containing some verses which she asked that he set to music. Those stanzas found today in every hym- nal were: . "I need Thee every hour Most gracious Lord; No tender voice like Thine Can peace afford. I need Thee O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee; O bless me now my Saviour I come to Thee!" THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Westmount United Church ROSEHILL BLVD., JUST NORTH OF KING ST. REV. R. LORNE McTAVISH, D.D., Minister ation has produced its share of the world's great preachers and hymn writers and in the Baptist list there is no greater name than that of the pastor-poet Robert Lowry. Seventy-five years ago he was in Brooklyn New York and it was while engaged in this ministry that he wrote his popular Easter hymn "Christ Arose". After turning out the words of the song he set his own stanzas to music. Dr. Lowry was still pastor of the i torch and a blazing beacon calling men to a newer, higher, way of life.
