'German air force destroyed the Fleet Street Yields Bones 1.000 Years Old By SIDNEY TAYLOR LONDON (Reuters)--In a quiet corner of Fleet street, archeoclo- gists working in the ruins of St. Bride's church are unfolding a story that had its beginnings in the first century of the Christian era. Long and patient excavating has revealed more than 1,000 years of history among thousands of human bones discovered beneath the church on the site of one of the early outposts of Roman civiliza- tion in Britain. Six hundred coffins have been found and more than 1,000 skulls have been sent to Cambridge Uni- versity for research into the chang- ing characteristics of the Briton. Research will be directed by one of the greatest authorities on ar- chaic anatomy and pathology, Prof. Frederic Wood Jones of the Royal College of Surgeons. In the catacombs, bones lie everywhere, knee - deep, waist- deep, sometimes in loose mounds, sometimes in tidy squares of skulls and thigh bones, arranged alter- nately in chess-board pattern. The excavations would never have started but for the war. On the night of Dec. 29, 1940, the church of St. Bride's, built by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), the architect of St. Paul's cathedral, to replace the 15th-century church lost in the great fire of London in 1666. All that survived the raid were four walls and the superb tiered reached the level of mdtural un- disturbed earth they had uncov- ered the remains of three earlier churches. The earliest of these is a Saxon apse, the arched semi - circular recess where the altar stood. The fact that the original St. Bride's stood outside the city walls of those days indieates it was built on the site of a Roman cemetery and thus had been used contin- uously as a burial place since the first century. The archeologists are convinced that they have found London's oldest known church. The disordered state in which many of the bones haye been found recalls the angry words of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) in his diary. Three years before the great fire, Pepys wanted to bury his brother there. He was disgusted when the verger, explaining that they were already overcrowded, offered for sixpence to "jostile' the other bones together to make room. There will be no more burials at St. Bride's once all the bones sent back. St. Bride's will be re- built as a new church for printers and journalists. Godfrey Allen, surveyor of St. Paul's cathedral, and an authority on Wren, is the architect. His task is to restore St. Bride's in such a way that the remains of all four churches are preserved. The Stuart vault will become a clumbarium, the mediaeval crypt a sacristy, the Wren vault, the charnel h and the 18th-cen- spire which is part of the cl silhouette, Wren's silhouette, London. Sixteen months ago the Roman and Mediaeval London Excavation Council began work under the dir- ection of W. F. Grimes, head of the London museum. Helped by a plan left by an 18th-century curate, Rev. John Pridden, they discovered several charnel houses and an arched medieval crypt also filled with bones. The centuries came off in layers as they dug--17th, 16th, 15th, 14th, through Stuart times to Tudor and Plantaganet, back to the Dark Ages between the Roman occupa- tion and the return of civilization with St. Augustine. HARMONY Friends Honor Mills Family QUEENIE FLETCHER Correspondent HARMONY--Mr. and Mrs Jesse Mills were pleasantly surprised a few evenings ago, when a group of their friends paid them a call. The nature of this call was reveal- ed later in the evening, when these folks, who had brought along refreshments and gifts, honored this couple. The occasion of this presentation, made by members of a Eu club of many years standing, was a- sort of farewell party. Mr. and Mrs. Mills and family, who have lived in this community for several years, are moving to the Northway Court area this week-end, where they will make their new home. A very pleasant evening was spent a boat trip down the uenay River. They are Mrs. orman Price, Mrs. 8. McCullough, Mrs. J. T. Dalby, and Miss Amy Jack- son. Mrs. William Redmond of Chat- anooga, Tenn., who is here visiting with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Jackson, does not mind the heat and humidity that is so distressing to many Canadians. She is quite accustom- ed to it and takes it all in her stride. The CRA program presently be- ing carried on in the Harmony School playground, is a welcome part of the children's summer days. Parents appreciate the fact that organized games and activity keeps small folk occupied and happy. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stacey spent a week in Quebec, where they visited with her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Mec- Bain, Lorrettville.
