48 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Tuesday, July 21, 1958 THE GREAT TOGO HAS TROUBLES HERE Tonight at the Oshawa Arena, Timothy Geohagen, of the fam- ous 'Irish Sleeper' hold and powers of hyonotism, will take on The Great Togo in the main bout of the weekly wrestling card. Togo will have troubles / again when he tangles with Tim- othy -- and he had them here last week too, when he bowed to {© Whipper Billy Watson, as shown above, when Watson "coaxed" The Great Togo to come away from the ring-ropes. SPORTS MENU Everything from Soup to Nuts" by Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'The wrestling fans who patron- | fze Pat Milosh's Tuesday night presentations at Oshawa Are n a, | previous will be on hand again tonight in| large numbers because their pet | hate of '53, The Great Togo, is go- | ing to perfrom again this time against Timothy Geohagen, in the main bout of the evening, of course. This isn't the first time' 'this pair has clashed on the local mat -- they were matched three weeks ago and on that occasion, The Great Togo after displaying his skill and strength at hand - chopping bricks anc "stones, then gave a demonstration of this tech- nique at the expense of Timothy Geohagen. The result was disap- pointing to the vast majority of Oshawa and district mat fans, since Geohagen is very popular here -- and not without good rea- son. Timothy has never failed to put-on a good shov in the Osh- awa Arena, ever since he made his first appearance here, under the uiding hand of the one-and-only d. "Strangler" Lewis. This means the bout tonight between Geohagen and The Great Togo is bound to be an- other major attraction. On top of that, the rest of the card also | promises some peppy entertain- | ment. In the preliminary bont, Hamilton's Abe Zvonkin meets Pat Flanagan while Don Leo | Jonathan takes on Man Moun- 'tain in Dean Jr., in the semi- final bout. Jonathon, one of the "biggest of them all in the mat | game, is an up-and-coming young s who already has made a hit with local fans. If he dis- poses of Man Mountain then it will appear that more worthy ponents will have to be found for the §alt Lake City terror. ) - There's a Lekshore Intermediate League game at the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium tomorrow night and McCallum Transporters will be gunning for their 22nd win the season. Colborne will be the Visiting opposition and this is one club that has given the Transport- ers a bit of trouble in almost every meeting this summer. Coach "Snowball" Wilson's boys are out to finish the schedule with- out any more defeats so this game tomorrow night should see the lo- cals performing in top style. Oshawa Merchants clambered back up. into fifth place in the Inter-County League standing, with their 8-6 win over Guelph Maple Leafs here last night at the Stadium. Merchants had to come from. behind twice and then finally moved in front. Eddie .Drapcho started for Oshawa and didn't have it. Wildness was his big weakness but he was also tagged for five solid hits in two and one-third innings. Johnny Walter did a nice job of relief pitching, after getting over the rough start -- when his first two batters -each clipped a single. He didn't give the hit after that until the single in the 9h by George D'Addario, Bill Hanra- han finished off the game, when Walter loaded the bases after there were two out. P) Merchants hit hard last night with Lawing getting three, Jones, Turk, Imbra and O'Connor each getting a couple. Billy Turk drove in four runs with his single and double. George D'Addario, Guelph coach, does some of his' most cost- ly, master-minding in Oshawa. Last time here, he pulled Drapcho, who had been rolling right along, and he sent in Marty. Philp, who was promptly clippe ~ for a triple by Herman Mason. Last night, af- ter Philp walked three in succes- sion, he pulled him and sent in Clark and Turk promptly bingl- ed one. Merchants went on from there to pound out six more hits off Clark, for four more runs. But prior to Philp losing control -- D'Addario, apparently to tighten his defensive play, inserted him- self 'n place of Frank Kinder and put in Walt Jeffries at first base, sending Carruth to right Fi "Another Sensational WRESTLING BOUT TUESDAY, JULY 21 -- 8:45 P.M. The win moved Oshawa back in the 5th place in the standing, as Galt Terriers were beaten in their ame last night by London Majors. OUR RBI'S FOR TURK "Butch" Lawing had three hits in four trips last night while Jim- Jones, Johnny Imbra and league- leading Ted O'Connor all collected two safeties in four tries but it was Bill Turk with his two-for-five who provided Oshawa's Seoring punch. Turk's single in the fift with the bases loaded drove in two runs and he doubled in the 7th to drive in two more, including what proved to be the winning run and he scored himself later on Butch Lawing's third hit -of the night. Sharing honors with the hitters in the Oshawa victory were all the team members with their defensive fielding and Johnny Walter with an outstanding 4ob of relief pitching after Eddie Drapcho failed to stick around. .The for mer Guelph hurler, 5% ' oo EDDIE DRAPCHO - (Old mates treat him roughly) ht by Merchants a week ago, is chance last night and didn't show very much. He walked three batters in the first inning and then Kennie Yount -- the Oshawa pitch- er who went to Guelph, singled to drive in one run. It would have been worse in that first frame but for a timely double - play throw to second by Ronnie Ruba as Gene Bilo, fanned and Nick DiCarlo tried to steal 2nd. Eddie Napier poled one over the right-field wall to make it 2-0 in the second. Di Carlo had a double in the same frame. MERCHANTS TIE IT UP fer hants Sled it sp at 2-2 hen aw ope with a. single, O'Connor singled to right sale, Imbra also hit one down that way, scoring Lawing and sending O'Con- nor to 3rd. With Imbra well off first, Frank Kinder threw to 1st to got Imbra -- but threw wildly and 'Connor then scored to tie it up. Drapcho's stay ended in the next inning. Marv Rich opened the third with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. Geo. Carruth flied out but Yount walked then Frank Kinder singled, scoring Rich. John- ny Walter came to the mound at this stage and both Lew Fauth and Eddie Napier greeted Walter with singles, which meant two more bou got : |runs. Marty Philp flied out and . | DiCarlo fanned to end the inning. From that point on, Johnny Wal- ter pitched hitless ball until the 9th. He chalked up a total of 7 seven strikeouts but in being sure he gave the Guelph batters "noth- ing good' -- he issued a total of eight walks. The walks caught up with Walter z in the 9th. Twice he had issued two free tickets in an inning but in the 9th, with one out, two walks |: and a single by George D'Addario | Come From Behind Twice Defeat Guelph Maple Leafs 8-6 ous disease. After DiCarlo had- snared Fran Dyson's liner with a one - handed stab, for utter rob- bery -- Philp suddenly lost control and walked three batters in suc- cession. Mgr. George D'Addario had just changed his team at this point, in search of defensive strength, inserting hi If at 2nd -- who threw to Marv Rich at 2nd base for the force-out. The shortstop didn't have his foot on the base however and all hands were safe. Billy Turk then poled a double to the centre wall and was safe at 3rd when DiCarlo missed the throw - in. Lawing then ingled to score DiCarlo with Osh- and Walt Jeffries at 1st, in favor of Kinder and Fauth. John Clark was brought in to itch against Bill Turk, with the ses loaded and Turk sl da awa's 8th and final run. THE BOX SCORE single into right-field, scoring Wal- ter and Jones to make it 5-4 and Lawing then grounded .into a fast double-play. In the 6th Ronnie Ryba opened out to Jeffries -- who tagged his base but then threw. badly to 2nd, Ryba going to 3rd from where he scored on another timely single by Johnny Imbra. ANOTHER COSTLY MISTAKE Errors which cropped up in the Guelph defensive play from time to time had an important bearing on Oshawa's ape and the 7t inning was just another instance. Jones 'opened with a single but when Mason tried a sacrifice bunt, it was too close to pitcher Clarke filled the bases. Pinch - hitter Phil | : Smolinski had watched the third strike go by for the second out |; but then Napier drew his third - | straight walk of the the bases. It was here Manager Mike Gar- bark decided to takeeno more chances and he brought in Bill Hanrahan to take the mound. It proved the only run Fittings could get but they made it stand up until the 7th and then J. McConkey doubled for Duplate and scored on a two-bagger by Joe Spencer, which tied it up 1-1.
