Comwall, Artists' Haven, Becomes Music Center Too WASHINGTON -- Cornwall, long the haunt of artists, became a music center as well when British musicians and composers gather- ed there in June for the St. Ives Festival of Music and the Arts. The week-long festival will, it is hoped, become an annual event for the old fishing port of St. Ives, reports the National Geographic Society. Cornwall, once an isolated cor- ner of England west of the River Tamar, is popular with travelers. It has some of the most impres- sive coastal scenery in Britain as well as excellent beaches. Palm trees flourish in a climate warmed by the Gulf Stream. Visitors have dubbed it the "Cornish Riviera'. CLOSEST TO AMERICA The narrow, 75-mile-long penin- sula of Cornwall is the part of England nearest the New World. The Atlantic Ocean pounds its north coast cliffs, while the English Channel washes its softer southern shores and estuaries. Wild moor- lands and wooded river valleys lie inland, but the sea is never far away and Cornish people are a seafaring lot. In addition to St. Ives and New- quay, quaint north coast fishing villages such as Boscastle, Port Is- aac and Padstow nestle among crags, headlands and beaches. At the tip of Cornwall, Longships Lighthouse guides pass- ing liners, Land's End thrusts a bleak, granite fist toward the Isles of Scilly. On Mount's Bay, tucked under 'mandy. Divers Defy Death where the its southern flank, are big, sophis- ticated Penzance and tiny Mouse- hole. Beyond Lizard Point, south- ernmost part of England, the coast | stretches past the port of Falmouth past Polperro, once popular with smugglers, and Fowey, famous medieval port situated on a beauti- ful estuary. FISHING AND MINING ' "Fish; tin and copper," is an old Cornish toast, and mining and fishing, with smuggling as a side line in the old days, have always been traditional Cornish ways of life. Even in ancient times, Corn- wall was renowned for its tin. Copper mining operations have dwindled. Fishing, too, is on the wane and net lofts are being turned into ice cream pariors while paint- ers' easels dot the wharves. Cornwall, where 'the old Celtic tongue has left many lilting place | names, is rich in folklore and leg- lend. Tradition places King Arthur's birthplace at Tintagel Castle, also associated with tales of Tristan and Iseult. Sir Bedivere is sup- {posed to have thrown Arthur's | sword, Excalibur, into Dozmary | Pool high on Bodmin Moor. | No area in England is richer in | prehistoric remains. There are | many traces of the early Christian {era as well. Royal Cornwall be- came England's first dukedom, traditionally given to the sover- eign's eldest son. In World War 2, |it again figured prominently in | history as American troops, left Cornish harbors to invade Nor- UK. Firms Want Work In Canada LONDON (Reuters)--The Times today says help should be offered to British contracting #irms trying to establish themselves in Canada with a view to taking part in the St. Lawrence Seaway work and other big Canadian development projects. The seaway may provide the impetus and a unique opportunity of its own," th paper says in an editorial. 'But the important ob- jective is that British firms should be able to establish their position in Canada so that they can partici- ate in Canadian developments at arge." Since the war, The Times adds many British contracting firms had built up a large business in many parts of the Commonwealth, 'but Lanads has remained a closed ook." Federal Aid For C-bombs TORONTO (CP)--Health Minister Martin said Saturday that negotia- tions now are under way for the federal government to make sub- stantial grants to the Ontario Can- cer Centre to be opened here shortly. (161b) By DOUGLAS LOCKWOOD | DARWIN, Australia (Reuters)-- More than 100 professional Japan- ese pearl divers operating in heavy seas off the north Australian coast have been disappointed not to find a sea bed thick with the world's best mother-of-pearl. Though the beds have not been fished since 1940 and should be rich in oyster shells, Japan's first big post-war pearling fleet has in the first month out brought up Suly about 200 tons valued at $224,- The 317 men of the control vessel Taiyo Maru and 25 luggers, tossed about like soapsuds on the rough Timor sea northwest of Bathurst island, are battling severe hard- ship on a diet of dried oysters and boiled rice. Drinking water is ra- tioned. They are searching for the large oyster pteria margaritifera, known as "the black lip" because of the smoky-colored band near the edge of its shell. Strangely, any actual pearls found in these mulluscs are less important since they are whiter than Arab pearls and less attrac- tive. . Japan has for generations car- |ried out a flourishing trade in the lustrous lining of these big oysters, mother- of -pearl. Its main con- sumer, mainly in the United States and Britain, is the button industry. It is also used at home and over- seis for knife handles, fans, in- lays, jewelry and for othér orna- mental purposes. Australia also harvests the shells and has forbidden Japanese pearl- ing fleets to come with 35 miles of her coasts, which explains the scarcity of fresh water aboard the Japanese ships. Defying hardships aboard and | hazards below, the divers, looking {like martians in their steel hel- mets and diving suits, dive be- tween 90 and 120 feet with their wicker baskets in search of the cost of the cobalt bombs to be installed. Ontario Health Minister Phillips charged in the legislature this year that the federal government paid half the cost of the bomb, about $50,000, but left the province to 4 the installation costs, about 30,000. Mr. Martin said in an interview that the federal government had paid all costs of the bomb which had been in use in London for some time and that it would pay 50 per cent of all costs of future bombs. ° RASPBERRIES AND NEW POTATOES 50c delivered.
