24 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Thursday, July §, 1953 Weird Beastie Invades Town NEW HAMBURG (CP)--A slimy three-toed creature with a hideous tail crawls the streets of this south- western Ontario town by night and hides by day, Police Chief George Thomas said today. The 2,200 resi- dents are in a dither. The chief says it's no joke and won't rest until he kills "this beast." He has already taken a couple of shots at 'it. Deep marks in the ground, made _ by the three toes on two legs, have been seen clearly in, the morning. The heavy tail has also left an imprint. '"This is no joke," the chief said. "In fact it will be a tragedy if anyone is attacked by it." He said he caught a glimpse of the creature Saturday night as it was half-running, h al f-crawling back to its lair somewhere near the Nith river." "I fired at it with my revolver, but it was too dark to tell whether I had nicked it or not. I'll be wait- ing every night from now on." Townspeople are also on the watch. Mothers have forbidden their children to go near the river. Chief Thomas figures the creat- ure to stand about three feet and weighs about 50 pounds. Dr. F. A. Urquhart, director of zoology at Toronto's Royal On- |tario Museum, said the creature might be either an America® bit- tern or a great blue heron, both large water birds. He said both birds have three toes and are common in Canada. PROMOTIONS (Continued from Page 3) Schewaga, Malivena; Stark, Wil- son, Thompson, Orville. Virgin, Geraldean. When nine-year-old Lois Birch- more saw her two sisters drowning last Tuesday night, she ran a quarter of a mile to get her father, sobbing all the while. She paid no attention to eight other swimmers who were within 100 feet of the sisters. When Lois found her father on his front porch she screamed: "The kids went down and didn't come up." The father, Cyril Birchmore, reached the pool to find Ethel Joy, 14, and Mabel Lianne, 11, dead. Swimmers. nearby knew nothing of the tragedy until he dived into the pool and recovered the bodies. they should prepare this work dur- ing the summer for submission to the teacher of English in Septem- ber; approved books may be ob- tained at the Public Library.
