10 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Monday, Jug, 08 WELL PLAYED GAME Majors Nip Merchants On London Field 4-1 Wo EVERYTHING FROM SOUP TO NUTS There should be a big crowd of baseball fans on hand tonight at the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium to watch the Oshawa Mer- chants clash with Waterloo Tigers in an Inter-County senior baseball game. The Merchants lost two tough decisions on Friday and Satur- day, in 8t. Thomas and London respectively. The game in London on Saturday night was a real thriller, a well-played game with good pitching featuring the Majors' victory over Merchants. Waterloo Tigers have made some player changes in their line-up in the last week and among others, have released pitcher Joe Yosurak, who pitched the Tigers to a win over Merchants, in the local I-C opener. The veteran hasn't been going so well since then however and Tigers have made a change. Manager Mike Garbark has had to juggle his line-up in recent games due to injuries but Tommy St. John is back in action now, Fred Thompson has been released, the young infielder needing a little more seasoning before he can keep pace with I-C company. Tonight's game is called for 8:30 o'clock as usual and with the Merchants badly in need of a victory, local ball fans can be sure they'll see their local team going all-out to win this one over Water- loo, Bob Penny was the hurler for London Majors and it was the fourth-straight victory for this classy Inter-County hurler, who gave Oshawa seven scattered hits and received great help from his shortstop, Billy Deak, who had eleven assists from that tough diamond location. Gerry Wilson's 400-foot homer was the big blow, meaning two runs for the Majors. Chuck Aleno had two hits in four tries to lead the Merchants. In other Inter- County League games on Saturday, St. Th Elgins defeated Brantford Red Sox 9-6. Word comes out of St. Thomas this morning that Wally Burger, their hard-hitting outfielder, has forsaken the team and apparently headed for Quebec. Elgins visit Kitchener tonight, Galt plays in Guelph and London Majors are at Brantford. That was quite a day the Oshawa McCallum Transporters had for themselves on Saturday. They played baseball practically from two-thirty in the afternoon until nearly midnight, with just time 'out to eat and drive back from Bowmanville -- where they won the afternoon game over the Roses and took over the league leadership, It was a comfortable win in Bowmanville but the night game here against Lindsay wasn't nearly so easy. It took 'em 13 innings to declare a winner and then an infield error set the Transporters up in business and they promptly moved right in with some smart moves to cop a 3-2 decision. It was a grand finish to a grand ball game, one that deserved a big attendance but didn't have same. Ted Stone relieved Bill Gingerich, tied the ball game with a good hit, making at 2-2 and then battled with Loucks of Lindsay for six more innings before they settled it. Transporters are playing in Whitby this evening and Colborne plays here on Wednesday night, Normie Brioux copped the feature race in the stock car doings at Oshawa Motor Raceways on Saturday night. It was quite a feature too, with 20 cars entered and a couple of crack- ups that eliminated five cars before it was over. The track was in great shape, dry and fast and Saturday night's racing was quite the fastest ever wit d in Osh . Ted Hogan set | » mew track record for the paved quarter-mile circuit, doing it in 17:1 secs. Mrs. C. Van Dan of Burketon voted for her most popular driver and went home thrilled to the point of being nearly speechless. Her ballot was drawn for Saturday night's big prize, 8 TV set, donated by the R ys, in co-operation with Union Television Co. They're giving another one away this Wednesday night too, when something new will be held at Oshawa Raceways -- midget auto car races, which are touted as being even faster and certainly mors dangerous than the stock car jam sessions. One of the biggest wrestling crowds in Oshawa's history was on hand last week to see Gorgeous George and both the old and new mat 'fans were very much impressed with the bout staged between Bobo Brazil and Lord Athol Layton. This pair won the applause crowd with their fine wrestling and although they did take ing they could be "nawsty" if in the mood, the majority featured scientific holds and skill plus agility. They in tomorrow night's wrestling show at the Oshawa t this time each will have a partner. Lord Layton um, Lord Blears, as a mate while Bobo Brazil teams Flanagan. This should be a lively main bout with . Abe Zvonkin, who took up pro wrestling because anted to stay in a rugged sport, after he qquit senior football, take on Hans Herman in the semi-final bout while Dick Raines Jack Leskin in the curtain-raiser, BRIGHT BITS:-- Anybody in Oshawa doesn't think there's plenty of sport going on around the local "sandlots" or Neighbor- hood Park diamonds, just isn't being observant. A glance at today's Sports Calendar shows several adult games on tap for this evening, as well as some girls' softball games and both softball and baseball for minor teams . . , Yesterday saw a cricket match, a girly' softball Same, two minor baseball games and at least three men's softball games -- and to think when the Sunday sports bylaw was defeated, we figured we wouldn't have to work on Sunday . . . UAW Juvenile softball loop opens tomorrow night with Ontario champions, Con- ht Tigers playing in Whitby Tgwn Park and Brooklin Juniors visiting the Rundle Rockets at Alexandra Park, 4 LONDON (CP) -- London Majors made the most of few opportunities to hand Oshawa Merchants a 4-1 defeat in an VInter-county Senior Baseball League game here Sat- urday night. Majors bunched three of their five hits for three third-inning runs, while pitcher Bob Penny kept seven Oshawa blows well spaced to record his fourth win of the year. . Gerry Wilson's 400-feet homer past the scoreboard in centre field was the big blast in the" London attack. He scored Gord McMackon ahead of him and the merchants never did come back. Al Gerringer hurled well enough to win most games but his mates could do nothing with Penny's of- ferings. Bill Dadson came in to hurl for the Merchants in the sev- Toronto Dafris Jrs. Barely Win Out Over- Oshawa Motorettes In an exhibition softball game played at Willowvale Park, Toron- to, yesterday afternoon, Toronto Dafris, of the East Toronto Junior League, just managed to squeeze out an 18 - 17 decision over the Oshawa Motorettes, Juvenile team. As can be gathered from the score, it was a wide-open game, with plenty of errors, lots of walks and all kinds of hitting, with the winners having 15 hits to Oshawa's 14 but the Motor City girls doing better defensively, with only four errors as against nine chalked against the home' club, Oshawa Motorettes opened with four runs four walks, two errors and one hit, by Luke. They scored in almost every other inning after that, always with two runs, extent enth inning and was touched for the final Oshawa run. Bobby Rose with a single and a triple in two official trips to the plate, paced the Majors. Chick Aleno's two for four was Oshawa's best mark. ONTARIO STEEL BEATS COULTERS In an Industrial Softball League game played at Lakeview Park on Sunday, Ontario Steel defeated Coulters 10-8. Ontario Steel scored three runs in their second inning on Ashton's opening double, a couple of walks and a triple by Linton only to have Coulters come right back with three walks and three singles, to tie the count. In the third, the Steelers scored a half-dozen runs on five hits, a couple of walks and one costly in- field error, doubles by Johnson and Ashton being the big blows. A double by Hodgson, a single by Linton and Johnson's double gave the winners their 10th run in the fifth inning. After that, they were held tightly in check by Michael, but the damage had been done. Coulters got a run in the fourth inning and a couple in the fifth when Michael doubled and Keeler singled. In the 7th, a walk, single by Crawford, an infield error and Turner's double gave the Coulters two more runs to make it 10-8 but they also failed to score in the last two frames, so it ended at that. - ONTARIO STEEL -- Linton, cf; Minaret, 1f; Johnson, rf; Hrico, ss; Ashton, 1b; Starr, 3b; Collen, 2b; Tripp, ¢; Hodgson, p. : COULTERS -- Wyatt, ss; O'Neil, 3b; Watson, If; Michael, bd Ogden, 1b; Keeler, 2b; Crawford, c¢; Lay- ton, rf; Turner, cf. that in the 6th inning, i missing out as they did in the 2nd, 4th and later the 8th, the Motor- ettes had their biggest rally of all, a 5-run splurge on two hits, a walk and several errors. With the score 15-15, Acurrettes took the lead in the bottom of the 8th when they scored three runs on as many hits. Two walks and solid singles by Tateishi and Seo. with two out at the time, provided the victory punch for Dafris. The Motorettes didn't give up without a last - inning bid either. Karpinski was safe on an outfield error, Luke walked and with one out, Gail O'Reilly singled to score Karpinski and Luke came home on a passed ball to make it 18-17 but the tying run died on 2nd when Peel struck out and Honeyman grounded out. Tigers scored a lone run in each 2 and then clicked for three runs on two walks, an error and two hits, in the sixth and added four runs in the 7th inning, on three walks and the same number of hits. Parts and Service practically won the game in the first inning when they hopped on the offers of Greeley for a total of nine runs, on three walks and ten solid hits. They added four moré hits but got only one run out of them, in the second stanza and then got three runs on two walks and two hits, in the 6th, to complete their total. | PARTS AND SERVICE: Chap- | man, cf; Taylor, 2b; King, 3b and p; DeGray, 1b; Clarke, rf; Mec- Avoy, ss; Randall, ¢; Shaver, p and 3 b; Edwards, If. The game was a re-scheduled affair of a game rained-out back on May 18. Oshawa's win, coupled with a loss by the Whitby Merchants to Lindsay on Friday left the Trans- porters alone in first place . . . the only club left undefeated in the league. Their percentage was. better than Whitby . . . 1.000 to .833, but the Transporters were oddly 2 | enough a half-game behind the sec- ond place club! DURSTON'S 1ST WIN Lefty: Jack Durston pitched all the way for his first win against no losses this season. He scattered 10 hits for five runs, saw his mates error three times behind him. Jack struckout nine of the Roses and walked six. He fanned the side in order in the bottom of the fourth. Gord Sturrock, another southpaw was the Roses' starter. He stayed till the top of the ninth when with the score 9-4 and a big Oshawa rally in progress, he was pulled for reliefer "Bunny" Legree. Legree pitched to two men. He allowed one hit and then struckout the next man to end the splurge. Sturrock whiffed eight and walk- ed five while allowing 12 hits. Le- gree fanned one, walked one. and allowed one hit. The Roses com- | mitted four errors. Actually the game was much closer than the score might indi- cate. Oshawa scored a single run in the third and then made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth when Bill Cook tripled and scored on Bill Kel lar's single. ROSES TIE IT UP Bowmanville tied the game with a two-run rally in the bottom of that inning. Sturrock singled and moved to second on an outfield error. A wild pitch sent him to third where he scored on Tim Cox rifle shot through shortstop. Max Yourth doubled and the second run scored. A wild scoring rash in the top of the seventh saw the Transporters plate four runs on three walks, one error and three hits. The hits were singled by Kellar and Mae- son, and a double by big Mike McArthur. Bowmanville were not to be out- done yet. They pounded over two runs in their half of the seventh to make it 6-4. Three walks and two errors did the damage. Things became tense as both teams went through a scoreless eighth, but the balloon went up in the top of the ninth when Sturrock's Stutt just didn't come in with a 0p. Maeson singled and stole second. McArthur pped out. Durston walked and Barnes went down swinging. Mroczek came through with a line single to centre to score one run, put a runner on third and himself on second. Cogk got a base on balls to load 'em up. NO OTHER TIRE CARRIES THIS arantee Bill Kellar blasted a single to centre and two runs came in. Var- ga followed with a walk and that was all for Sturrock. Legree J, Hd up a single to centre to Tom O'Connor, and two more runs scored . . . Varga moving to third on the blew and Tom pull- ing up at second on the fielder's relay. Bunny Maeson came to the plate for the second time in the inning, and while he wqs being pitched to . . . Coach Willson gave Frank Varga the sign to steal home. VARGA STEALS HOME Varga took off like a rocket and made the plate with ease. Maeson went down swinging and the score read 12-4. Bob Gallagher doubled to start the last of the ninth. Johnny Stain- ton singled him home and tried to make second on the relay. The run- ner was out on a cut-off by Dur- ston of Mroczek's' outfield throw. Jack tossed to Kellar at second base. Kellar fired to Maeson at first and "Bunny" tagged out the runner. Gilmer struckout, but Dad- son and Legree both walked. Falls flied out deeply to centre to end what looked like a big rally. Offensive stars for the Transport- ers were Mike McArthur (2-for-3), Bill Cook (3-for-4), Tom O'Connor (2-for-4) and Bill Kellar (3-for-5). Max Yourth (3-for-4) was the whole show: for the losers. Defensively, Frank Varga look- | ed outstanding for the winners. And again for the losers it was second-sacker Max Youth. GRECIAN QUEEN WINNER NEW YORK (AP)--Mrs. Ben F.
