Cook beat the throw by thirdsacker Art Truax ... and when Truax left third uncovered, Jozkoski, the supposedly sacrificed player, con- tinued right on around second and slid into third safely. Cook stole second on the first itch to Varga. Jozkoski made a Fake double steal attempt, but held fast and Al Menzies, the Lindsay catcher, retained the ball as a safety measure. Varga worked his count. to two balls and one strike before they decided tp intentionally pass him to load the bases. Kellar was the next batter. He struckout to make the stratagem by the Lindsay crew look a age double play now would end the threat, and there was a play at every base. Large Mike McArthur was the batter. He whirled around on Doug Loucks' first pitch. His intentions A |out the side in order. of pasting the ball up against the outfield fences were obvious. The second try by Mike was a success ... a clothesline smash into left. Jozkoski scored and the Transporters had won the mara- thon tussle 3-2. DESERVED BETTER | Loucks, the losing pitcher actual- ly deserved a better fate after 13 innings of great baseball. He al- lowed but 11 scattered hits, struck- out 10 Oshawa batters and walked only two. His big trouble lay in his defence ... the Merchants booted the ball on four occasions. One of these was that one in the last of the 13th that set Jozkoski on firstbase. Gingerich was in trouble quite often, but got himself out of it on most occasions. He fanned seven batters, but walked five. He looked great in the fourth when he struck- Stone's control was much better. He fanned six, walked two and al- lowed one run and four hits. Joe Lowry, the enemy centre- fielder was their offensive star, getting three hits in five trips. He CROSSWORD PUZZLE 4. Shelf 5. Bachelor of Medicine (abbr.) 6. Noah's boat 7. Spear 8. Two games were played at Lake- view Park. The first, on Satur- day, was a Godin League fixture against Avro A, a Toronto team. Oshawa's powerful bowling con- tingent of Jack McDonald, Al Hal- ey, Len Harris and Peter Staples laid low the gpening Avro wickets and at one "time the scoreboard showed seven out for only 32 runs. A surprisi tail-end stand between Martingall and Brazier raised Avro's final total to 60 and that was enough to deter Oshawa's batsmen. With the exception of "Lefty" Howarth who continued his sea- son's fine batting with a spirited 10, and newcomer D. R. Owen, of Ajax, who made 15, the Oshawa batting. was pathetic. Four men made "ducks" and the team was all out for 45. Yesterday Oshawa were hosts to their rivals of long-standing, the West Indian team, of Toronto and district. In matches last year the Indians literally pulverized the lo- cal team but yesterday Oshawa had things all their own way. The seven batsmen who went to the crease played themsdlves in cauti- ously and runs came slowly but steadily against the best of the vis- itors' bowlers could put down. Jock McDonald was top scorer with 28 and with Dick Brimmell who made 18 raised the total from 38 for three to 69 for four wickets. John Huband reached double fig- ures and Howarth added eight to his season's total. Oshawa retired having 73 for five and then played havoc with the TT THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE, Monday, Jame 8, 1953 § West Indian batting. Within 45 min- utes the entire side was dismissed for 34 runs. McDonald took four wickets for an average of 1.75 which was bettered by Howarth who, in an astounding single over, got two wickets for no runs. Next Saturday Oshawa CC jour- neys to High Park in Toronto to meet the West Indians in a league game. Hamilton Swimmers Win Ontario Meet LONDON, Ont.
