Find Cornerstone Of Victoria College -= The long-sought cornerstone of Victoria College, which is now the Ontario Hospital here, apparently has been found as a result of a visit of 8 group of Toronto men who brought special equipment with them to detect the metal box that usually holds the contents of a cornerstone, They tried a sonoscope, a small cobalt bomb and a non-metallic mine detector. The mine detector showed a slight re-action at the southeast corner of the building. This has been thought to be the . location for. many years but up until now there has been no way of verifying it, as there is no mason's mark that is usually found on the cornerstone of a building, Professor C. B. Sissons of the University of Toronto, who is the historian of Victoria College, ac- companied by Dr. Peter J. Sand- ford, Magistrate F. C. Gullen. Peter N. 8. O'Brien of the U of T physics department, and Frank Cogan of the HEPC, came down here on Saturdav and after lunch- ing with Dr. H. C. Moorehouse. superintendent of the Ontario Hesnfta! and Ted Clamp, encin- eer of the hnsnital thev started their search for the cornerstone. A slight reaction with the mine dletector was noticed near the main entrance of the building wt this was regarded as being due to the presence of nines near that area, At the sontheast corner of the buildine the detector again showed sione of life and a star dri! wes driven into the stone. © Tt aopeared to he sod stone all the way through and the search in that area was about to be given up when the drill moved freely, apparently into a cavity. Professors Sissons said that it certainly looked hopeful although the drill will have to be applied from another direction into the stone to confirm the presence of a cavity, Nothing further was done Saturday but later, work will be continued. Mr. Clamp was of the opinion that the drill apparently 1 had bitten into the lead box in the cornerstone cavity. However the presence of the cornerstone in that spot will have to be more conclusive before steps are taken to open it up. Magistrate Guillen, who has been an enthusiastic searcher for the missing cornerstone, said that apparently the stone facing later applied to the foundation had covered up the mason's guild mark on the stone. Ownership of the contents of the cornerstone can revert to the former owner -- Victoria College --even although it is now the property of the Department of Health of Ontario, according to statute, Magistrate Gullen be- lieves. The cornerstone was laid Feb. , 1832, and by an act of parlia- ment and Royal Charter, the then Upper Canada Academy became Victoria College in 1841, It flour- ished here for 50 years and then the site was moved to Toronto and the building became a provincial hospital in 1902. During the cen- tennial celebration of Victoria College, a pilgrimage of old boys of the school was made to Co- bourg on June 7, 1932.
