Branksome Hall Marks Anniversary TORONTO (CP) -- Branksome Hall, whose schoolgirls wear uni-| forms of Stuart hunting tartan) skirts, khaki blouses and ties, is| celebrating its 50th anniversary. The day and boarding school, which- has 500 pupils, is well-known among Canadian educational insti- tutions. In spite of its sentimental link with Scotland in name and tartan skirt ana its tie with Eng- ish boarding school system. Branksome Hall is essentially Ca- nadian. The girls get out to enjoy the corner drugstore or a movie. For those who don't make the grade academically, there are courses in fine arts or domestic science. Principal Edith Read believes that girls should be taught to be ladies as well as educated. She says she is more concerned with developing aptitudes than moulding a type, but 'laaylikeness" is not ramed down anyone's throat. The school is set in 10 azres of build- ings and playing fields. During the war, Branksome put up girls and teachers from Eng- land's private schools and t heir support was a private project of Miss Read and a group of other interested persons. The late Queen Mary heard of the effort and when Miss Read was in London last year, she sent her an autographed picture of herself as a mark of esteem. All Roads...
