Councils Chip $700 REN , Scotland -- Faced with Hiding costs of construction and long lists of families seeking new homes, town councils of Scot- land have launched a low-cost hous- ing program calculated to reduce e prices without sacrificing e and comforts, writes David in the Christian Science Moni- tor. Through the adaptation of new | ues and skillful con- sideration to design, 12 houses three apartments each have been completed in the government town of Glenrothes at a saving of £312 ($870) a house. The approximate cost is £1,170 of £1,482 for com- parable conventional patterns. SAVINGS TO TAXPEYER There has been no reduction in the normal sizes of rooms or in fittings and equipment. Cost cutting has Seon done by reducting the little used space under stairways and landings, and by using gabled roofs instead of span roofs. The architects saved more than 50 square feet in the circulation space without sacrificing amenity or conveniene in the livicng room and two bedrooms, while the bath- room and kitchen are a few feet jarget than similar rooms in ouses. Binde the total cost of the house is less than normal, this means a reduction of interest on loan pay- ments made by the Glenrothes de- velopment corporation, with a con- sequent saving to the taxpayer. Just before the new tenants were admitted, the corporation invited Off Cost Of Building bered that the breadwinner would be a workingman with limited means and everyday clothes that would play havoc with two-delicate furnishings. The council called in a woman architect who had had similar ex- perience with miners' homes in the north of England. f Light furniture had been install- ed, combining comfort and utility For example, small chairs in the of [living room were cleverly made to give support where it was need- ed, and a desk, with no under sup- ports, was fixed to a wall, taking up no more space than required for a chair in front of it. The settee and easy chairs were covered in dark blue. The dining table and chairs were made from sycamore, and the walls were gray. BRIGHT KITCHENETTE The bathroom had a gay, bright look with plain yellow lino- leum, white voile curtains, and a splash of color provided by a red towel. Blue-checked gingham curtains gave the kitchenette a bright, alry appearance, aided by gray floor matting. A roomy cupboard under the stairs, but still in the kitchen, could house a bicycle or a oatrriage, together with all the usual domestic array of pails and brushes. In the boys' bedroom, space was saved by using double-tier bunks. space, and a plain table with a red top allowed plenty of room for play, work, or study. them to study one of the h fur- nished by the Council of Industrial Desi anofficial organization ap- po! the government at the end of the war to help manufactur- ers and consumers to appreciate new trends in design. house had been furnished if it were to be oc- REJECT LIQUOR OTLETS RODNEY, Ont.
