Stockholm To Deck Itself For 700th Anniversary STOCKHOLM -- A colorful and| varied program for the celebra- tion of Stockholm's 700th annivers- ary in 1953 now has been prepar-| ed. The observance will begin in| May and continue until the end of | September, 'while a special "Fes-| tival of Stockholm" scheduled | for June 3-10. i Ami the major attractions during Stockholm's gala week are performances comedies and musical plays at the famous Drot- tingholm Palace Theatre near Stockholm, once the private play- house of King Gustaf III, a con- temporary of France's Louis XVI. Some years ago the ' intimate .theatre was faithfully restored to its original state, even to the in- tricate stage machinery. y The Royal Opera also plays a series of special performances, and | the celebrated Opera Ballet will offer "Miss Julie." a dance com- | position based on the August) Strindberg play, which has attract- | ed international attention. A movie | version ofwthe drama will also be shown, along with several of the latest Swedish feature films. Folk dance teams, accompanied village fiddlers, will stage ex- bitions at the Skansen outdoor museum and zoological garden. One of the most popular ideas offered by the planning committee concerns the medieval Island of Riddarholmen, part o the Old City, where in the 13th century .Birger Jarl built a fortified castle, "Three Crowns," on the site where the Royal Palace now gtands. In the rapidly growing 20tH century Stock holm, with its functionalistic apart- ment houses and wide tree-lined boulevards, the Old City retains an aur of mellow antiquity. It is now planned to turn back for a few months, and to restore lo the Island of Riddarholmen its medieval spirit. The ancient toll -gates will be temporarily re-estab- hed, and the currency will be changed from kronor and oren to riksd=ler and skilling. Troupes of | ambulating comedians will sing and play and perform their con- juring acts in the market squares. The night watchman will make his rounds across the island, loud- ly calling out the passing of the hours. Town criers will read. the official gazette to the populace, in- forming them what has transpired in the last 24 hours. Even the dreaded stocks and beheading blocks will be out again as grim reminders of a. bygone ruthless era. Wants Canada In Bigger Job With Defence LONDON (CP) -- Geoffrey de Freitas, Labor member of Parlia- ment and former junior minister, says Britain should urge Canad and -the United States to take a greater part in Eruopean defence. Writing in the Liberal News Chronicle, de Freitas said he would like to see an Atlantic army, with North America joining Britain and Western . European countries in maintaining forces on the conti- nént. De Freitas, former under-secre- | tary for air, made the suggestion in what has become a continuing 'Planning To Remodel Don't Overlook With cities in Canada mush- rooming, the move is ever more and more to new housing develop- ments in districts fringing the ur-| ban area. But to some people, a home in| the more central part of the city has an irresistible attraction. Many | of them buy houses that were built | years ago, which are still solid, | and then re-model them to bring | them into line with mid-20th cen- tury living. Given a basically good house to start with, nothing could | be more fun to do nor more re- warding for your labors, Stripping the gingerbread off the facade and | the interior, getting down to the | solid base of the house, and then | re-trimming it in the modern, func- | tional style gives a home of dis-| tinction, solidity and, if properly done, comfort and convenience | equal to the newest house in town. OFFERS CHALLENGE One room in the older house that offers both a challenge and an opportunity to the planner is the bathroom. There is, perhaps, no other place where obsolescence is more obvious, because the design, coloring and layout of bathrooms and bathroom fixtures have under- gone a complete revolution in the past 25 years. At the. same time, bathrooms in this type of houses usually are more spacious than we are accustomed to in modern hous- wes, and thus give the new owner a chance to have all those conveni- ences he has dreamed of in a bathroom. Today's housewife thinks of it as a combined bathroom, dressing room and powder room. The in--| troduction of such things as the| Bathroom top washbasin, a functional piece of equipment which can be used as a dressing table, at the same time as cupboards built in beneath provide clothes hamper, drying cupboard, storage space for bath- room linen, or what you will. This is really economical use of space that was formerly wasted. To aid in the most convenient layout of the bathroom,\designers have built baths in a variety of sizes and shapes to give greater flexibility to the planner who has to arrange a layout within fixed dimensions of a room, as in the case of the re-modelled house, In many cases, square bath-tubs. which have the diagonal length of the normal tub, plus the conveni- ence of a bath-seat, will fit into the plan more conveniently than the normal recessed tub. Where space is very narrow, tubs measuring as little as 42" by 31" are to be had. In- planning the bathroom, don't overlook the many extras that re- quire little space by comparisbn to their convenience, such as the weighing machine, a portable heat- er, shelves where cosmetics are not only easy to reach, but can be decorative as well, a dressing seat, perhaps a foot-stool for baby to stand on while washing. Above all, give. vent to your color sense in your newly- modelled bathroom. Your local plumbing contractor will have charts for color schemes in tiles and bathroom fixtures in a variety of pastel shades, showing comple- mentary colors for wall paints to make your bathroom the most beautiful as well as the most use- ful room in the house, sun ray lamp and the home perma- nent wave into modern living has altered the function of the bath room. And with accent on time, a bathroom that can allow for use| by more than one member of the family at once can become an aid to shattered nerves and an insur- ance against missing the 7.15. If space allows, an extra wash basin is always a most convenient arrangement. In families with more than one child of school age there is always the problem of "which twin has the wash basin". It is a time saver and a nerve saver to let each have one. "ONTARIO FLOOR SANDERS OLD FLOORS REFINISHED ---------- Wall AND FLOOR TILE SUPPLIED AND LAID DIAL 3-7251 SPACE USEFUL Space can serve a dozen pur- poses. In the same way that a change has taken place in the sur- roundings of the kitchen sink, the adjuncts to the bathroom wash basin have been brought up to date. You can really do things with your bathroom by installing a counter- debate on whether Britain should join the European Defence m- munity. The treaty which would set up the community, with a 12- division German army, has not been ratified by any of the six countries involved. Some observers say that without British support greater than now envisaged, the treaty will be in- definitely delayed, LUMRER CO.
