Roland Jackson of this city has started in the business of operating a taxicab company, un- der the name of the 'White Cane Cabs." He will operate the busi- ness from premises at the corner of Graybourne and Beatty Aven- ues, west of Ritson Road South, and will engage fully competent and experienced drivers. CRA Staff Puts Final Touches On "Pinocchio" The grey and cream walls of the Community Recreation Building on Gibb Street are bedecked with trees and various scenery for the forth- coming presentation of *'Pinocchio" at the McLaughin Bandshell. And CRA staff is bedecked with paint. At last, at long last, everything is just about ready for the big night, Wednesday. People who happen to be in the vicinity of Centre, Gibb or Metcalfe Streets in the early Nine-Roomed House Moved to New Site A house, weighing about 50 tons, was loaded on a truck and moved four blocks to a new site in Oshawa yesterday afternoon. The 'house was formerly 16 Park Road North and it was moved to Anderson Avenue. Owner of the house is D. Strade- ski who is going to go into business as a house mover, He bought the nine-roomed home, which is of un- usual design, and which was on a site that is going to be used for a business extension. For moving, Mr. Stradeski hired a 200 hp. truck from James Sercome and Sons Ltd., Mechani- cal Movers, of Toronto. The mon- ster engine was hitched to a trail- er that was many yards long. The entire house was hoisted off its concrete foundations and roll- ers were placed beneath it. From rollers it went on to tremendous beams which in turn rested on the trailer. Inch by inch 16 Park Road North was pulled out into the street and by 2 p.m. yesterday it was clear of its concrete base- ment. It then started on its journey to | its new resting place where exca- vations, sewer and water services were ready. Not a window was broken and not a board was rattled loose. : "I estimate that the whole new home on the new site will cost me about $3,000," said Mr. Strade- ski -- delighted at his bargain. He has been a widower for the past six years and is caring for his three children. hours this coming Wednesday morn- ing will see the great exodus of trees, shrubs, windows, houses, cos- tumes, candy canes, beds, and all the various paraphernalia connect- ed. with the show. And at the band- shell Wednesday night at eight- thirty the audience will see little Judy Briton as Pinocchio with Ann Hoffman, Frances Zayette and all the favourite bandshell perform- prs. They will see the tumblers and the acrobats applauded so loud- ly in "Carnival Capers." All the colour and fantasy of the far-fam- ed 'Pleasure Island" will be un- folded right in front of their eyes. Everything to be seen this Wed- nesday night is the result of many long hours of painstaking direction on the part of Joan Lambert, who has added colour to so many band- shell shows in the past. TO YOU BY | Lemon Mart &-Son At Rotary | Declared Nothing Can Replace Free Enterprise System : "If we, as citizens of Canada, distribute evenly our nat- ional resources, and look after those less fortunate than our selves, we can't go far wrong," the Hon. William A. Good- fellow, Ontario Minister of Public Welfare told Rotarians gathered for luncheon yesterday noon in the Piccadilly Room of Genosha Hotel. Recalling his early days in public & services as a town councillor, he pointed out that no matater how much a person thought he knew, it wasn't wise to talk too much. Fol- lowing that tenet, the cabinet min- ister kept his address brief and witty. In more serious vein, he de- clared that Canadians had "the best type of social democracy in the world," and urged his fellow citi- zens to keep it that way. "As citizens of the greatest coun- try in the earth, we must develop to the full the assets haanded to us," said Mr. Goodfellow. "We can lose them, if we don't make the bes possible use of them." \ TRIBUTE TO ROTARY The speaker paid tribute to Ro- tary Clubs and other service organ- izations as "the last vestige of priv- ate public welfare in the province," lauding their efforts to help those in privation, their gift of the in- dividual touch to crippled children ant other unfortunates. "There 1s nothing to replace the free enterprise system," stated this veteran of thirty years of public life, "This period of Canada's great- est development is due to individ- ual enterprise, and it's a habit we don't want to lose. "In such an era it is easy to be- come self-centred and forget about the less fortunate. Don't trample on the little people," warned Mr. Good- fellow in conclusion, "or else our system will fall by the wayside, just as other democracies have crump- led in this age." . INTRODUCED BY T. D. THOMAS Mr, Goodfellow was introduced by T. D. "Tommy" Thomas, MLA, who praised him as dne of the progres- sives in the provincial government, who had been instrumental in abolishing the "iniquitous" means test for pensioners over 70.
