Eisenhower's Meteoric Rise May End In Presidency By THE CANADIAN PRESS Prime Minister Winston Church- {11 once turned to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and said in his own version of mid-west U. S. slang: "What I like about you; Ike, is you ain't no glory hopper." Churchill meant by this remark that he liked the way Eisenhower had been content to let others get credit for the glories of victory which the Allied forces were win- ring in the Second World War. Since then, a great many Ameri- cans have come to like Ike. Some cf them like him so well that mem- bers of the Republican party nom- inated him Friday as their candi- cate for next president of the U.S. FIRST INDICATION The first faint indication of Eisenhower's political appeal came more than eight years ago with a single tub-thump in New York City. Africa and Sicily and during «the invasion of Italy, when Ike's popu- larity was running high in the U.S. Few paid much attention to it ahd when word reached Ike he was quoted as saying: "Baloney." But somewhere along the line he changed his mind and the sol- dier from the plains of Kansas is candidate Eisenhower as well as General Eisenhower. Ike was born Oct. 14, 1890, in Denison, Tex. Later his family moved to Abilene, Ike was raised. Father Eisenhower worked in a creamery to support his five sons, Ike and brothers Arthur, Edgar, Earl and Milton who now is presi- dent of Pennsylvania State Col- lege. After high school, Ike was ap- pointed to the U. 8. Military Aca- demy in the class of 1915. He was Kas., where (From 1935 to 1940 he was chief of | stat to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, then planning the defences for the Philippines. In 1941 Ike attracted the atten- tion of Gen. George Marshall, then U. 8S. Army chief of staff, for his handling of troop manoeuvres in Louisiana. After that his rise was spectacular. In 1942 he was sent to Britain to command U., 8S. troops in the European theatre of operations. Allied Commander he was pro- moted to general of the army, the highest rank awarded in the U Army, After the war he returned to Washington to become army chief of staff. He resigned that post in 1948 to become president of Colum- bia University.
