(Dec31) | THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE | (299 tf) | Creditors and others having claims | Executors at P.O. Box 233, Oshawa, | TRELEAVEN | Had Place In Affairs The life and history of the old town pump was marked by an in- timate relationship among all sec- tions of the community, Eric Willis writes in The Stettler Independent. Now we have the telephone and the automobile to get in toucn win our neighbors, but in. those days they had the old town pump. People did not congregate around the old pump without gaining an intimate knowledge of their neigh- borhood. They knew their business problems, their family troubles, their daily schedules, their views on religion and politics in the same way that the telephone girls of to- day know where the ladies spend weir afternoons and who has a crush on whom. HAD TO PUMP The only way to get water from the pump was by pumping it up, and all the cultural heritage in the world would not bring it up with- out pumping. It seems strange that this doctrine of "something for no- thing" should have been preached as late as 1935 in our own Province of Alberta, and it seems more Sirange that so many people fell or it. * When the pioneers lived here, the old town pump, which was also a rionecer, represented their philosophy completely, They knew i by experience that if they wanted | water they had to keep on digging wells and pump it up, and if they wanted to get ahead in life they had to work for their own advance- ment. All day long, the pump was in operation and each customer obtained his supply of water in direct mathematical proportion to the effort expended in using the pump. : This was a communal well and as in all commercial undertakings, it was each for all and all for each. Men would pump for women and young mesa would pump for old men, but the principal of "some- thing for something' still operated, and this principle worked out with mathematical exactness. | NOT A GIFT We have the same principle fune- tioning today in family allowances and in old age pensions. A lot of people no doubt, imaging that these pensions are gifts from a paternal government as a generous gesture to the needy proletariat, but on the contrary, they are paid for by the producers, just as the water which was handed around from the old pump was paid for by the work of the pumpers. The final lesson of the old town - ~ | pump is the old one that material p ions do not r rily guar antee happiness. That little com- munity, set down in the heart of a new country, without cars, with out radios, without telephones, without electric lights. without any of the gadgets of civilization--jud- ged by modern standards, es I said, it had nothing, but judged by ancient standards, which have stood the test of time, it had every- thing--the possession of a com- | munal and contented mind. | EASY EXISTENCE Did it help to fill the hospitals, | did it"help to fill the mental sani- tariums, did it crowd the divorce courts, did it lle awake at night, worrying about world affairs and the high cost of living? It did none of these things, because, with all its crudeness and with all its faults, {it led an uncomplicated existence, { ¥hich enabled its members to bridee the gulf between life and | civilization. Everybody knows what life is and what it should be. It is some- | thing that is lived only once and {it is something quite apart from | business and from civilization it- self, although civilization should make it easier to function, STAFFORD BROS.
