Ellis, Tom Sleight- hom, Alex Whitelaw, Wm. Hay- craft, Dode Cameron, Will Wil- kinson, M. Mallet, John Tweedie and others, the only remaining or- iginal members left are John Wil- lis, Wm. Uxbridge Man Hospitalized After Accident A young man from Uxbridge Township, Theodore Derriet of R.R. 3 Uxbridge, suffered severe ine juries in Whitby Wednesday even- ing when a car which he was driving was struck in the rear. Derriet was taken to hospital suf- fering a broken pelvis and face in- juries. Derriet was having difficulty with his car on Brock Street South and a friend, Donald Pindar of Port Whithy was towing him, The ve- hicles stopped on the CNR over- pass. Then a car driven by Joseph McCloskey, 102 Mary Street, tby, struck the rear of the Derriet car, violently. Provincial Constable W. S. Hilliard investi- gated. Chas. Christmas In The Churches The age-old but ever new story of Christmas will be related in song and sermon in all Whitby churches on Sunday. Special Christmas music will be featured by the choirs. Special services will be conduct- ed at the Salvation Army in Pick- ering and Whitby on Sunday, De- cember 23rd. At 7 o'clock in Whitby citadel, .a candlelight service will be held in which the Christmas story will be presented in color. At both - morning and evening services in St. Andrew's Presby- terian Church the Rev. David Marshall will preside, with Mrs, P. N. Spratt at the new Cassavant organ. In the evening a traditional candlelight service will be held. There will be a special children's Christmas service at 11 a.m. Sun- day, and in the evening at seven there will be a Christmas carol service. Christmas eve, D ber 24th, at 11:15 there will be carol singing followed by Holy Com= munion. There will be a service on Christmas Day at 10 a.m. morn=- ing prayer 'and Holy Communion, At Whitby Baptist Church, Rev. O. A. Hill, the pastor, and Mrs. W.' E. G. Summers, organist and choir director, have prepared spe- cial services for Sunday in keep- ing with the Christmas season. There will be Sunday schol at 9:45 am, In the morning the subject will be "The Christtmas Message", and in the evening "Troubled or Rejoicing". On Sunday evening at seven o'clock there will be a Christmas carol service in All Saints' Angli- can Church, On Christmas Eve there will be a service at 11:30 and on Christmas Day at 9:30 am. The latter two services will be ser= vices of Holy Communion. The choir of Whitby United Church, with its soloists, have planned a special program of Christmas music as a basic part of the Sunday services. Espec the evening, the .service wil be very largely cheral in natu in a candle-lit setting. Rev. On Christmas Day, the United Church Sunday School hall will be used by the local Dutch congre= gation for a service and a social time, Whitby Gandy League (Ladiss' Bowling) On Wednesday the Ladies' Candy League had a lucky draw on chickens, the lucky winners were: M .Thomson, Mrs, Rivers, F. R. Harrison of Thorah as its first chairman, . The present status of civil de- fence arrangements in the county is outlined in the following report of the committee: "Members of your Committee have consulted Colonel the Hon. Arthur Welsh, Provincial Director of Civil Defence. At the present time the question of responsibil- ity for various plans of this work has not been definitely settled as between Federal, Provincial and Municipal bodies. In our own County, Chief Wes- ley Elliott of the Oshawa Fire De- partment has been -appointed to arrange co-operation between the various fire departments in the County and to secure interchange- ability of equipment, As a guide to next year's Council we recommend: ' That a list be prepared showing names, addresses and telephone numbers of the following. (a) The President and Secretary of each branch of the Canadian Legion. (b) Secretary of local fire bri- gades. (c) Secretary of Women's Insti- tute and Red Cross Branches. (d) That each local coun.cil ap= point an official who shall be pre- pared to go into action if the'ine ternational situation should be- come darker, His duties should in- clude: (1) Make a survey of avail- able emergency accommodation such as public halls, summer cot- tages, etc. (2) Arranging education in civil defence and first aid."
