THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE wr Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood (AP) Here is heartening news for newspaper- men: Hollywood is making a pic- ture about them that is guaran- teed to be accurate. At least that's what its makers claim. The movie is called "Dead- line U.S.A" and its writer-direc- tor is Richard Brooks, a former newspaperman himself." The studio has constructed a newspaper city room that looks more authentic than most of those whipped up for movies. It has the appearance and smell of a news- paper office. No bottles or blondes sit on the desks. "This is going to be the real McCoy," assured Humphrey Bo- gart, who plays the managing ed- itor (with a crew-cut toupee). "No reporter is going to come running through the city room shouting 'scoop! stop the presses!" | The city room will neither be a hub-hub of noise and activity, nor (will it have a funeral hush. Asked 'if he was a member of | the vast "I-used-to-be-a-newspaper- man" club, Bogart said: "I should say not. And most of the guys who claim they were, Gifts at Christmastime are always more exciting if they are wrapped in an Intriguing original package. Even if you're not a professional in the art of giit- wrapping, your family and friends will appreciate their gifts all the more if you have spent a little thought and four eye-catching ornaments made of brightly-colored felt, (scraps are fine) and trimmed with sequins and beads. You can decorate the tree with the little green tree or the jaunty snowman, too. Have a gang of the girls in and make some Xmas candy and let them work on these cute doodads. Thrifty and Quick CHILD GUIDANCE: Appreciating By GARRY CLEVELAND MYERS, Ph.D. We and our children promote brotherhood as we gain apprecia- tion of persons who have different religious faiths and practices {from our own. In these days, with so many hates in the world, it should be good for all of us to know and tell | our children about a religious celebration of our Jewish neigh- bors known as Chanukah, which comes during December of each year. Our children have learned from the Old Bible about the Temple in Jerusalem to which the Jews from all over Palestine came, long, long ago, to pray. There came a time when Palestine was ruled by a cruel king, Antiochus, who did not pray to one God, but to images made of wood and stone. King Antiochus ordered 'the Jews to worship these images instead of observing their own religion. The Jews disobeyed the king, of course. The king with his army drove most of the Jews out of Jerusalem, re- moved the sacred things from the Temple and turned it into a club- house, BLOW OF HAMMER According to the Jewish tradi- tion, there lived in the little town of Modin, near Jerusalem, an old man and his five sons. One of his sons, Judah, was so strong that] when he struck anything with his -- Here's Fun DOLL CLOTHES EACH FROM ONE PIECE 7.27) Others Faiths hand it was like the hjow of a hammer. All my life I have been ruthlessly honest and coldly analy- tical with myself questioning every thought or movement with a suspicion of ulterior motive. In school I was thought to be a child prodigy; but my inner questing made me moody, and in time was almost diastrous to my health and scholastic showing. In all honesty, however, I must say that this searching attitude has of- ten helped me. It led me away from a psycho- pathic religion that was trying to teach me to fear God as a tyran- nical wrathful being. It has kept me from cracking up, as many times I almost did. But it's got to the point where I'm so honest it hurts; and I have done without meals to pay someone back promptly, when I could have paid them later. It is taking me away from any and all belief in God. I have not been afraid of any punishment for honesty, and be- lieve me I've taken a lot; but now I am wearied of the struggle and would like to retire to lick my wounds. My friends tell me you to get somewhere. have to to stretch honesty a little | But I can't, man Destiny" -- of the human be- MARY HAWORTH"S MAIL:- Overwrought by Self Analysis Mary; it tears something apart inside of me. And yet this insistent self-questioning is literally break- ing my health, Can you help me? ~ Fs Dear F'.S.: As Alexander Pope so aptly said, '"The proper study of mankind is man." and in the last half century, starting with a few shafts of insight courageously of- fered by the Viennese physician Sigmund Freud (now deceased), some headway is being made by interested minds, towards under- standing what causes people to be the way they are. One piece of discovery, relevant to your case, concerns the deve- lopment of the human faculty of self awareness -- of individual self consciousness, expressed in terms of self observation, self an- alysis, self criticism, etc. This faculty is an inborn poten- tial, of course. No amount of coach- ing could bring it into manifesta- tion in, a dog, horse or monkey, for instance. It is a specifically human aspect of life, probably dir- ectly related fo mankind's as yet mostly undeveloped spiritual potentials. And by spiritual poten- tials I mean the inherent tendency and latent capacity--discussed in Lecompte du Nouy's book "Hu- or ir, to significantly "relate'" him- / to the Creator of the universe, via disciplined awareness. Jesus set the fruitful example. He con- sciously related himself to the Cre- ater in performing his miracles. "It is not I but the Father in me, He doeth the works-,"' he said. But coming back to the main therhe of individual self - aware- ness: 1. The extent to which this faculty is developed in the indivi- dual, and the quality of its expres- sion (whether hurtful or helpful), is determined by the character of the mother-child relationship, dur- ing the first years of the new life. 2. The infant grows from simple consciousness of bodily discom- fort or pleasant sensation, to a reflective consciousness of his own body and personality--as brought to his attention, shall we say, by his mother's treatment of him. 3. If his mother is warmhearted, kindly, available and comfortgiv- ing; if she lavishes love, praise and encouragement as part of his daily nurture, the child's self aware- ness emerges as spontaneous self acceptance -- 'he has a zest for life, and he isn't critical of him- self. What you call 'honesty' in your- seif is a compulsive display of | anxiety, activated by an uncon- scious, unwarranted guilt-complex --ingrained by your mother's habit- ually severe, unsympathetic handl- {ing of your growth, no doubt.
