srs p PAGE TWENTY THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1951 Red Barn Enlarged To Offer More ng Pleasures: Larger, Modern Red Barn Continues to Draw Capacity Crowds from Near and Far CROWD PLEASING OLDE TIME AND SQUARE DANCING ARE THE FEATURE ATTRACTIONS! In the past year, the Red Barn hds grown from a small Saturday night" dance gathering to become one -of the biggest and best old-time and modern dance jamborees in this part of the country. Now, in- dof opening its doors only on a night, the Red Barn holds Friday night dances, which draw almost as large a crowd as the old Saturday night gatherings, and on Saturday the place is jammed to the doors. Carloads of old time dance enthusiasts pull in from such centres as Toronto, Lindsay, Pe- térboro and Port Hope every week- el For this reason the management of. thé Red Barn decided to do some enlarging, and do it fast. A new wing, large enough to accom- modate about 8 square dance sets was--built on the west side of the ngll, and already, the crowd has increased to the point where fur- ther- enlarging is being c¢ontem- Im the hot weather when many oid time dance centres close down, the Red Barn still packs them in. In the colder weather, the crowd Just naturally seems to increase. "What then, draws the people back week after week? Harold Reddick, owner of the Red Barn pointed out that there were several factors. Billed as "Oshawa's Friendliest Dance', he believes this to be true. Folks who enjoy old time dancing, come to dance, not sit around, and for this rea- son, the orchestra keeps them moving. Bud Rogers no sooner lays aside his electric fiddle after an old time square dance, until he has picked up his sax, and swings into a modern "jump" number, or smooth fox trot. The orchestra plays anything the customer wants --fox trot, waltz, tango, Paul Jones. : The orchestra, under Bud Rodg- er's leadership, has recorded some 45 or 50 old time numbers, and these are broadcast to a large, and enthusiastic radio audience every Saturday night at 7.30 from the local station. Bud himself, who has played over several Western Ontario Radio Stations, is tops in the old time fiddle playing field, and square dance caller Bob Fow- ler is the best in this part of the country. Recently, when Don Messer came to town, Bob Fowler naturally was the caller he used. The Red Barn also has some un- usual policies not found anywhere else. It is a very common sight to see a complete stranger take over the "mike" to sing a numi- ber, to see an old-time fiddle play- er replace Bud Rogers for a square, or a strange caller to take over for an old time square. Ev- ery instrument, including the drums, piano and guitar, have at some time been played by the pa- trons. Such-things as family groups, in- cluding small children, are quite cominon at the Red Barn. You may see a would-be cowboy wan- der in, dressed in full western out- fit, complete with a guitar strung over his shoulders. The patrons themselves are a friendly crowd and come from almost every walk of life. House- wives, stenographers, working girls, merchants, laborers, busi- ness men and farmers. They all join together to make one big carefree gathering on Friday or Saturday at the Red Barn. Harold Reddick has announced that he intends to bring in a few well-known old-time groups in the near future, for special old-time jamborees. The Calgary Range Riders, a group of eight or nine westerners will appear soon, with a complete stage show and dance. These boys are well known on ra- dio, records and stage. Contact has also been made with Smokey Sayburn and his Hillbilly band. 2 The above picture taken by a Times-Gazette photographer last Saturday night, shows one end of the new wing, which has recently been added to the Red Barn.
