PAGE TWENTY-TWO THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE "WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1951 | Morey RA J Centerpiece Trees Made of Simple Materials "1 think, when you sit with these lovely colors, you just can't help being artistic," Mrs. Thomas M. Smith protested to friends insisting she was an artist. Surrounding her were row on row of table Christmas trees, 15 tables of them -- each from two-feet tall 'down to four or five inches--shin- ing and sparkling in all colors of the rainbow. e ; ' Mrs. Smith, of Silver Lake, Wis. made them all with Mr. Smith's help. They started right after La= Day to cover wires and dowel sticks with crepe paper, and then to wind them with shiny, fringed acetate paper in delectable hues-- green and red for those who want traditional Christmas colors; tur- quoise, lavender, soft pink, and deep cerise, silver gold. UNUSUAL COLORS USED They show candle holders to >= A pink damask cloth was suggested for use with white and pink trees and candle holders. Many years ago, Mrs. Smith's parents, the Rev. Rudolph A, John and Mrs, John, founded St. Paul's House, a nonsecretarian home for eldrely folks in northwest Chicago. Last year Mrs, Smith wanted to do something to help its annual pre- Christmas bazaar make money. "I got to thinking," she told me when asked how her tree venture started, "that everybody loves fes- tive tables at Christmas. But, what could one do that would be "dif- ferent? FRINGED ACETATE PAPER "Then one day I saw some fringed acetate paper in a five-cent-to-a« dollar store. The paper was blue- green on one side and silver on the other. I twisted it around my fin- She clearéd $2,300 for the home last year, and planned for a larger scale this year. She could sell far more than she is able to make, she says. But she doesn't - desire to hire helpers in order to make more. Mrs. Smith says it's her belief that when you start doing this sort of thing in a -production sort of way, the work loses its individuality. She designs her trees and candle hold- ers as she goes along. Each is a little different from the others. She has made 1,000 trees, all told; and 100 candle holders. ; To make a tree for the centre of the table 'or similar use, Mrs. Smith starts with a wood dowel stick for the trunk; and wires that can be bought for 35 cents a bunch, for the branches. Pasting is done with a cement which dries slowly. ,. The dowel stick she covers by winding it with: narrow strips of crepe paper. Then she secures one end of the fringed acetate paper to the top of the "trunk" by means of Scotch tape. "Take at least three inches of always face away from you, so the fringe of the paper sprays out.- "Now," Mrs. directs, "twirl the stick with your thumb as the fringed paper comes dowm Leave two inches at the bottom to attach to the dowel stick." From there on you attach the branches, building up. The branch- es are not measured in uniform length. They are varied, as of course you would suppose, to give a nat- ural look. Use wires that will bend, to give graceful outlines, after you have wound them with the fringed paper as you did the trunk. LEARNING THE TECHNIQUE "Remind anyone who starts to make these trees not to be discour- aged," Mrs. Smith says with a reminiscent chuckle over her first experience. "The paper may tear and break and pop at the start," she cautions. "But twirl your wire branches with your left hand, and twirl your trunk stick. Slashes must always go to the right." Her candle holders are made by covering pasteboard holders (pur- chasable at most 10-cent stores) slashes up gently. Design possibili- ties are limited only by one's own imagination. . "In everything you do," Mrs. Smith adds as a final, helpful warn- ing, "be sure that you do it.se- curely." The, acetate paper, as probably you know, can be bought by the yard or roll in many stores. Or you can buy the paper in sheets, and slash or fringe it as you wish. BADGER FEAST One of the strangest surviving Christmas customs. is the badger feast held at Ilchester,~Somerset. It was started by poachers in Norman times, says the Montreal Herald, and has continued without a break. The lads of the village catch a badger, kill and dress it some time before the feast. On Christmas eve it is strung on a spit over a huge fire at the inn and cooked slowly. When it is ready the party attack it with fingers and pen-knives; no cutlery othér than this is allowed. CHRISTMAS IN SWEDEN Christmas Spirit For Every Day The message of Christmas is not just for a day. It was a message meant for all the days to come until eternity, the great message of peace. Through succeeding cen- turies many men have heard that echoing song. It as sunk deep in- to their hearts and minds and they have known the meaning of true peace. But in all that time too, Mil- lions have not heard it, or, hear- ing, have not heeded, and frustra- tion, confusion, distress, tragedy, have been their lot and that of the unhearing world in which they lived. The hunger for peace has been in their hearts. The quest for it has been on their lips. It has been voiced from public plat- forms and the press and magazines are full of the search. Power, mo- and many of those methods have sound value, but unless they link- ed up with the message of Crhist- mas they have missed the secret of real success. So clear and so simple is the solution, and yet so hard, perhaps because man as an intellectual being finds it hard to accept as authoritative so simple an answer for such tremendous, complicated and bewildering problems. Message Of Life The message of God's supreme love for men is the message of life and the way of life to which it points is one with two great guiding principles, an answering love towards God and love for one's fellowman. The secret of peace that passes all understanding is as simple as that, and whether the new year will be a happy one de- pends on the extent to which in- dividual men and women recog- nize and follow that truth. It is simple, but not easy, for there are many things that dis- tract and interfere and human weaknesses that cause many a fail- ure even though the right goal is in view. But let no one think that he or she has no infleunce. And little manifestations of kind- ness and good will and love make up a great iolal, jusi as smmii manifestations of unkindness, en- vy, hatred and malice increase th atmosphere of evil in the world by just so much. At Peace With Neighbors And no man can hope to live, in peace with people of nations he does not know personally if he can- not live at peace with his neighbors. He has not yet learned the open secret of peace and its way. And by the same token, he who knows how to live in peace and good fel- lowship with his neighbors has in his heart those qualities of toler- ance, good-will and love that make for peace anywhere. Those who keep the message of love of God in their hearts and love for God and love mankind as their rule of life have the sec- ret of how the New, Year can be a happy one, for no matter what the trials ahead, or what difficul- ties may lie in the way, they have within them the secret of the peace that endures the peace on which true happiness is founded.
