THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE EHECHING ON SPORT We'll make this group of paragraphs a sort of hodge- podge of news. First . . .. we didn't have room for our Big Four All-Star team yesterday, so here it is: Flying wing, Cummings (Ot- ] tawa); halves, Custis (Hamil- ton), Waggoner (Hamilton); Turner (Ottawa); quarter, O'Malley (Ottawa); centre, Hirsch (Toronto); insides, Bevan (Hamilton); Cecilia (Montreal); middles, Gain (Ottawa), Mazza (Hamilton); outsides, Phyffer (Toronto), Baldwin, (Ottawa). You'll notice we've moved Mazza to a middle post. He's a great end, but we like the guys we have in that position, while Vince has proven many times he can play the tackles post . . . and well too! We picked Bruce Cummings for flying wing, because we can remember the days when he played over in Ajax and was first spotted for the Var- sity crew, from where he went to Ottawa . . . really a great kicker and pass receiver. °° The other posts on our team - are self-explanatory . . . or at least we believe so. If you've got a team, send a letter, we'll print it. On the basketball front . . . the Rovers were handed an 11- point setback (47-36) by the strong Intermediate ""C" club out of Ajax last night at the OCVI. That wes the first game of the current ODBA season. To- night our Irish go to Whitby. Tomorrow the Grads play in Port Perry. Brother, things are beginning to move quickly. The game at the OCVI was good from a standpoint of set shooting. Both Ab Gilbert and Pat Sheehan poked the cords mightily in this department. Willie Casanova, the Windsor star, slipped home six field goals and eight free throws for Ajax to be top scorer for the, night (20 points, no less!). Don Seeley, the referee who handled the game, deserves a Jot of credit . . . he handled it alone. Ajax failed to come up with an official. That situa- tion has been remedied though, they'll use Oshawa men from now on. Neither club had uniforms last night, but with the wool situation as it is now, delays on delisry can be expected on almost anything. When the boys are finally decked out, they'll make a great sight. Fair crowd last night, too! The beginning of the end + « » that's the way the Galt Black Hawk junior hockey fans are looking at the deal that sent young "Pistol" Pete Con- acher up to the Chihawks of the NHL to replace his Uncle Roy. Coach Red Hamill and Man- ager Al Murray are going to have a lot of trouble filling the hole left in their big front line by the absence of Charlie Con- acher's son. That the kid is good, there 'is ne doubt. And as if to prove it, he got in on the one goal scored by the Hawks in their 1.0 win over the Leafs in the Windy City on Sunday night. Pete played between Ken Wharram and Bill McIntosh and was one of the leading lights in the Galt attack. Now he's playing in Roy Conacher's Jeft wing spot for Chicago. Bill Tobin of the Chihawks has further intimated that this is only the beginning of a "youth movement", In other words he's interested in other Junior players . , . should he pick up Wharram from the Hawks, the Spitfires better move over, they'll have com- pany in the cellar. A couple of Chicago "C" form players are on the lineup of St. Mike's Majors (Murray Cos- tello and Ron Wallace). The rumor is rolling about that a switch in teams for these play- ers might be in order to bol- ster the Galt crew . . . or that they might even turn pro! This youth movement could make a big difierence in the Junior "A" league . . . and very soon, too. And don't look now, but the Generals visit the Hawks to- night in Gai . . . wonder if this change in their "front wall could aid our boys a little. We've got a new undefeated streak going . . . two ties, one with Marlies (5-5) and one with St. Mike's (1-1). Could be this will be a winning effort in Galt, though that's quite a few games in four days. And we aren't exactly a club with any depth in player strength. CHECKLETS -- Word from' the Oshawa Curling Club to the effect thaf "Apple Night" will be held next week has come forth. The event will take place this Wednesday at the club. Idea behind things is that the winners of the night's curling events will be award- ed apples as prizes. We mentioned that Boston Celtics had an unbeaten streak extending back to the opening of the NBA season. Wust luck was never wished on a team faster. They lost to Syracuse not one day after our mention. ing the fact . . . by a 97-95 count too! Easy Ed Macauley was the high point man for the losers (26), while Dolph Schayes and Wally Hess led the win. ners, word from Springfield in in the AHL has Bob Taylor tagged with the ni¢kname "Bashing". He's the rugged ine dividual who played for the Gens. a couple .of seasons back and then went to St. Kitt's. Just last week, he was awarded the player-of-the- week vote by the scribes in the Indian camp. The Belleville Junior "B" hockey team will this season be known as the Hawks, They dropped that colorful Rockets tag when they switched spon- sors. Ted DeGray, ex-Oshawa Bee player, is pivoting one of the punch lines for the club. Looks very efficient say the writeups. He is playing between Stevens and Gilmour. The scribe down that way figures his club as title material , . . could be! « « by Bob Rife Wings, rweek, increased from three to five poinis onto Maple Hockey League race. winger born in Floral, picked up three goals and an as- sist last week to move into third position in the individual scoring race. Pat's check, Ab Gilbert, one-time » | pitcher with the Transporters junior baseball club, was the high scorer for the Rovers with 18 points. RALLY POINT Syd Gedge, alnky centre for the Ruvers played a great game as an offensive and defensive rebounder. His point total was six, but his rallying of the local team made a big difference. At the end of the first quarter, which saw the lead change hands twice, Ajax led 14-10. Sheehan and Gilbert waged a scoring duel with the bout a saw-off at that point . both men scoring si points. In the second quarteg, Casanova, the Windsor star got hot nad thus Ajax had a two-fisted attack. Using his faking ability to draw Casanova slammed home six of seven free throws.
