It has been designed to meet today's demand for economy through the judicious use of a limited amount of floor area and provides five full-size standard rooms and bathroom within exterior dimensions of 87 feet by 31 feet nine inches. The design follows simple lines, deviating only slightly from the dollar-saving rectangular house plan for the living room exten- | sion which adds a note of dis- tinction to an exterior which might otherwise appear bare. A compact, conveniently located kitchen is large enough for a dining nook but if more space is required for Serving, meals the living room may do double duty as a living-dining room. The large window areas the appearance while the porch arrangement provides a protected front entrance. One of the prime considerations in planning the room arrangement of a bungalow is the separation of the sleeping quarters from the remainder of the house. This has been accomplished in this plan through location of the basement stairway and bathroom which effectively separates the Alege. soon ted ren Bre 5, vm an. Hy - Residential Building Is Down In 1951 First monthly total in 1951 to Convenience 2] and Utility Keynote of Design show a decline, October 'construc- tion contract awards this year at $139,142,500 were down $112,115,500 or 44.6 per cent from the unusually high total of $251,258,000 reached in October 1950. Major part of the difference is accounted. for by the $100,000,000 amount for the Labrador railway in the October 1950 figures, a sum which made that month the all-time record month for constructi BN award volume. It is at the same time important to realize that the current month was down an addi- tional $12 million over and above this amount. Ignoring the $100 million, Mac- Lean Building Reports Limited recorded figures show that the $12 million loss was made chiefly by a C3 I Ea KITCHEN euse = STORAGE EA | Kk, BED. Countering the overall loss in these types of construction was a smaller gain of $16 million in in- dustrial construction initiated dur- ing the month, and enough work undertaken in engineering construc- tion to chop the loss in engineer- ing down a half million to $99.5 million. Regarded regionally, the October 1951 figures give the greatest pos- sible contrast to last year. Last October every region was decidedly Ll 4 = LIVING ROOM -- cle. Remodelling Attic Helps Solve Housing Problem Thousands of families in almost every province who bought or built houses with expansion attics since the end of the last war, are now finishing their attics into one or more comfortable rooms, according to a recent analysis of newspaper classified advertising calling for building trades help and building materials. Nobody yet knows how soon Cen- tral Mortgage & Housing Corp. at Ottawa will be able to announce revival of the National Housing Act's Home Improvement Plan sec- tion. Under that plan banks, pro- tected by federal guarantee against loss, used to lend substantial sums for alternations or new plumbing, heating or lighting installations in existing houses, though not for ma- jor extensions, nor for plumbing, heating etc. in new houses. There is some conjecture in building circles that when the Home Improvement Plan section of the NHA is resur- rected the banks will be ready and willing to talk business with would- be' home improvers. Some building material dealers themselves offer special credit plans. Meanwhile, many families are do- ing the job out of savings, personal loans or income, doing much of the actual work themselves in a gradual step-by-step program nights and weekends. In some cases, home owners in areas of critical shortage of housing for defence workers are creating apartments in the unused, unfinished top storey or half-storey and renting the space to augment incomes severely strained by infla- tion Thousands of othér families are faced with a doubling-up problem and their expansion attics are prov- ing to be the solution. Retired parents are moving in with children - because their annuities are not suf- ficlent to maintain two households at today's prices. - ADDED MS AT LOW COST Cost of finishing the average ex- pansion attic into 2 bedrooms or a comfortable 2-room apartment is relatively low.
