Stroud's Fruit Limited Total to date : No More Strolls In Evening Nobody takes evening strolls any more, says a writer in The Los Angeles Times. And it is a grievous thing that this, like other simple pleasures of the past, has succumbed to the rush. Oh, yes, on the shore or in the desert or mountains, people still walk in the evening. They do it because the stars are out and it's been so long since they have seen the stars. NOT IN TOWN But nobody does it in town any more. They seem to prefer the mill-stream$ of traffic that have turned the Sunday afternoon drive into a nightmare. Or they stay in to have their eyes worn out by television. Vidoe, however, cannot be blamed for the passing of the evening stroll. The passing hap- | pened long before movies and vaudeville were brought into the | Hving room. It's only that people just don't like to walk any more, I guess. ON They open their garages and get | out their cars to go two blocks to the store. Lawyers take taxis to ride four blocks from their of- fices to the courthouse. Everyone, it seems, would rather wait five minutes for a crowded elevator than walk up or down one or two flights of stairs. Street cars, and buses, particularly downtown, have obsgainofl again passengers who ride only a few blocks. To be sure, there are in-town evening strollers--along Broadway and Hollywood boulevard. But they are gawkers, not walkers. EXCHANGE NODS What\I'm talking about is the genteel 'practice. of the evening neighborhood stroll during which neighbors \nod pleasantly to each other and perhaps pause to pass the time of day. N ly does it any more--except people who have dogs. And it's getting se you see more and more unaccompanied dogs. Believe it or not, you still can see an occasional star through the haze, the neon and'the searchlights. It is really quite easy to distin- guish a star. Just lift your eyes to the sky and look for a small light. If it doesn't blink on and off, if if doesn't spell out the name of a cigar, if it isn't bright red, if it | Tribes Mission.
