C. PARKINSON ndent Port Perry -- On Friday, Novem- ber 2nd, the Port Perry 50-50 Club held a special Hallowe'en Dance in the gymnasium of the Port Perry High School. With music being pro- vided py Don Jokes' orchestra of Newmarket, the forty-odd couples enjoyed a fine evening of dancing which included rounds, novelty and square dances. Jack Starkey acted as Master of Ceremonies while call- ing of the squares was ably affected by Jack Christie. During intermis- sion a plenteous, tasty lunch was served. Among the last 20,000, only four' condemned my advice on selective spanking. Near- 1 a thousand warmly approved. Here is one of the four con- demning letters: 'My Dear Dr. Myers: I hate to see your theories of child rearing given the sanction of appearing in print. So many people feel justi- fied in their unforgivable applica- tion of physical punishment be- ct se they read that an authority advocates it. I find that the people who spank have least control over those children and most certainly over themselves. PARENT NO EXAMPLE "How, Dr. Myers, can a parent teach his child patience or good- ness, self-control or kindness when by his own action he manifests their opposites? I like to think of many well-disciplined homes in our land in which children learn by example and not by force." The following is my personal re- pl. : You say that neither you nor your husband ever was spanked, and I have no doubt that you both are lovely persons and fine citizens: It is possible, however, that a few spankings you each had in your very early years have been forgot- ten. Granting that you and some other fine folks were never spanked, it's hard to imagine you never were subjected in your early childhood to any physical pain whatsoever -- never held or isolated by force or tied or "slapped down" or ever shrieked at occasionally. EDUCATED 'CHILD However, I would have great re- spect for the parent who, naver having resorted to 'force, has edu- cated his child to exercise good safety habits, wholesome respect for the rights and feelings of others, due regard for constitutec author- ity and good self-control; educated him to become a self-reliant, re- sponsible and likable person. But I'm still waiting to see him and his child at the age of 5, 8 or 15. If you have read my column daily for several months, you know that I put self-control by the parent first; next to it a thought-through- beforehand purpose, agreement be- tween the parents on just the few acts for which the youngster will be spanked, and 'consistency of each parent. I name only a few spank- able situations but many more that are nots I show how spanking may well be abandoned when the child is 3 or 4 displaced by effective sub- stitutes. My constant purpose is a founda- tioh for the child's self-control with as little annoyance to all concerned as possible; to help the child escape | shriekings and jawings; to clear | away vexations between child and | parent so they can enjoy each oth- er with a maximum of mutual af- fection and endearments. '| causes The high spots of my advice or charitable aid to many needy in the immediate locale. Much of their efforts have received little publicity in the past due to the nature of their work. However the ever increasing membership points to rosy future for this young || married couples organization and its zealous executive. $1.25 Size Regular $2.50 Size only $1.50 @® Use this silken lotion once and you'll never be without it!
