BUNDESEN, M.D. GLAMORIZING:- For Beautiful Brows, Lashes By HELEN FOLLETT « | BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Treatment of Oily Skin By HELEN JAMESON Putting the dull finish on ® shining nose is a part-time job with ,some young ladies. On all occasions, out comes the powder pad, It seems to be a never-end- ing job, and some of the victims of beaming complexions get pretty mad about it. Nature's oiling system, consist- ing of the sebaceous glands that are necessary to keep the skin from drying out, is working overtime. There are close to a million of these glands in the human body, but on- ly those on the face are inclined to be over-active. Just why that is, is anybody's guess. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of diseases of the skin and scalp claim that this condition is often due to a diet too rich in fats. Young girls who hang around soda fo tains and dip into the cookie jar are likely to have oily co a condition that invites and pimples. It stands to reason tjat, although applying local remedies may help, one should endeavor to remove the cause. Drinking lots of water seems to help, as does a rousing daily bath with soap suds and a brush. Night -and morning there should be a thorough face-washing. The soap must be bland; it must be the kind that fluffs quickly ino a | lather. It is a good idea to use shaving soap and to friction it in- to the flesh with the fingertips, the way Pappy does when he removes his whiskers. This gentle pressure has a normalizing effect upon the glands, because it acts favorably upon the blood streams. Also, as Quick Change Artist WARDROBE DOUBLE! S LIEYSUEE 37 1°) YOU MONEY Hollywood (AP) -- The life of a child actor in Hollywood today was defended by the mother of three movie moppets. : "I get angry when I read all the stories about how child stars face broken marriages and unhappy lives in their adult years," said Mrs. Eleanor Perreau. "I think that's untrue as hard and fast rule. Anyone who writes such stories can visit my home and he'll see three ol the most normal kids he .can nd." The speaker is the mother of Janine, Gigi and Gerald Perreau, Gerald's movie name is Peter Miles.. They are nine, 10 and 13 vears old, respectively, and the family has been in pictures almost eight years, Mrs. Perreau said their acting careers have made no dents in their normal living. "The children have been in the business so long that they are no longer awed by it," she said. "They accept acting in movies as a mat- ter or routine, the same as going to school. "As a matter of fact, I think it is a good thing for them to work in pictures, It teaches them to use their memoriés. They learn to make good use of their time, since punctuality is essential in making a picture. And they are earning some money which they will be able to use in later life." Mrs. Perreau said she thought over-ambitious parents are the cause when child stars are spoiled for later life. "I think it's wrong for parents to lavish acting and dancing lessons on their children and try to push them into jobs," she observed. KIDNEY STONE ONE of the outstanding symp- toms of kidney stone is excru- clating pain. Usually cramplike in character, it is so extreme as to be amenable only to strong seda- tives. It is felt ordinarily in the back, underneath the ribs, but it may travel downward across the abdomen and through the groin. There are many causes of kid ney stone, and the stones may be eitifer single or multiple, A de- ficiency of vitamin A; diseases in which there is a defective use of calcium in the body, such as parathyroid disegse; infection in- jury, or impaired activity of the kidneys may all lead to the for- mation of stones. A COMMON SYMPTOM Next to pain, blood in the urine is " probably the most common symptom. jThis is due to irritation of the kidney or kidney tubes or bladder by the stone. Diagnosis can be made by X- ray, which discloses the presence of the kidney stone, though some- times a special dye, 'which passes through the kidney, has to be given by Injection into a vein, to aid in seeing the kidney stone in the X-ray. In looking for a kidney stone, all urine should be strained so that both the doctor and na- tient may be able to determine whether or not the stone has passed out of the h~~v, In treating a kidney stone, the pain must be relieved first wiih sedatives, followed by relaxing drugs. Sometimes a stone is too large to pass from the kidney to the bladder, in which case it has to be removed surgically. REDUCED CALCIUM Very often, a stone can be re- moved without making a surgical incision. However, in many - cases the patient may have to be oper- ated on to remove it. When a stone is present, e fluid intake should be liberal and the amount of calcium in the diet shonld he that is, the milk intake should be lessened. . Sometimes, the giving of am- monium chloride by mouth will reduce the recurrence of kidney stones. © Many doctors effectively prevent their recurrence by give ing large doses of vitamin A. The other day as he hap- Dear Mrs. Beeckman: I know that the woman guest of honor is seated on the right of the host. But when my husband and I give one of our informal dinners for, say, two or three other couples besides ourselves, and there is no special "guest of honor," whom should I seat at my husband's right and whom should I seat at my right? 3 Alma B. I advise that a hostess should always take advantage of thé plea- sant fact that she can show honor to a woman guest by seating her at the right of the host, that she can show honor to a man guest by seat- ing him at her right, that is, the hostess' right. While some people don't notice these social gestures, they are very important and reveal- ing. to a discriminating guest, a socially-aware guest. And it's so simple for the hostess to make this gesture and thereby be given the social credit. : The woman given the seat at the right of the host and the man given the seat at the right of the hostess may not be special guests of honor, may not even be called that . , , they may perhaps be older or, per- haps more distinguished on some account than the others at the table, or they may not have been entertained in that house before, or they may be guests of another couple present. It may not be men- tioned that they are guests of honor, probably won't be mentioned , . . but this fact is graciously shown when the hostess, seating her guests, says, graciously, "Mr. Hill (or 'Margaret'), will you please sit there, at Dave's right? . . . And Mr. Hill (or 'John'), won't you sit here, at my right?" No Further Responsibilities For Proxy Godfather Dear Mrs. Beeckman: Just before I went overseas during the last war I was "proxy" god- father in the place of a friend of mine, the baby's uncle, who was then overseas. The baby's parents are not relatives or friends of mine, and I have seen them only two or, three times since. my return, and then only very casually. My friend now lives here in this city, and he tells me he sees his godson quite pened to mention giving him a birthday present recently, I sud- denly wondered if I have any re sponsibility to give or send the boy gifts on any occasion such as birth days or at Christmas time. Or are there any other responsibilities that belong to the "proxy" godfather? Will you please set me straight about this? . Bill L. Your courteous responsibility end- ed when you served at the christen- ing as proxy godfather for your friend. From then on, the position of godfather is your friend's respon- sibility. I imagine that he mentions the child so frequently to your be- cause he feels that naturally you would be interested and also that he wants you to know that he has properly and enthusiastically assum- ed his godfatherly responsibilities which you "sponsored" for him!
