0 1951 X THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood (AP) -- Can Hollywood make a picture about a mutiny aboard a United States navy ship in the Second World War? Some think it d¢annot because of navy objections, But Herman Wouk, author of the<best-seller, The Caine Mutiny; believes his book can be made into a movie, Wouk is working with film writer Stanley Roberts on a film treat- ment of "Caine" for prdoucer Stanley. Kramer. The book concerns some naval officers who depose an apparently incompetent captain dur- ing a typhoon in the Pacific. The author admitted that several studios had turned down the story because of navy disapproval. "Unknown to me, some studios submitted synopses of the book to the navy department," he said. "The navy replied that it could not offer cooperation in the filming of such a story. I have since seen the synopses and T agree with the navy. The treatments distorted the real Look Cute on Duty Just an Old-Fashioned Girl who Jovés to make Home more Beauti- ful Here's the apron for you! While other studios adopted a hands-off policy, producer Kramer took an option on the baok. "Actually it is a pro-navy book, and if it is treated correctly, the film version will show that." Wouk denied a printed report that the navy objected to the por- trayal of the captain as an Anna- polis man. He confirmed, however, that the use of the word "mutiny" may not be allowed, The picture may be called "The Caine Incident." Wouk still owes allegiagce to the navy, being a reserve officer. In fact, he conceived The Caine Mutiny on a cruise aboard the USS Saipan in the St. Lawrence waterway in 1949. "I went. to Washington to do some research at the navy library and was surprised to learn that there never had been a mutiny in the history of the US. navy. It's easy to understand why: Condi- tions on American ships are better than in any navy in the world." Princess Desires No Special Fuss At Washington Washington (AP) -- Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edin- burgh have asked no special con- siderations during their forthcom- ing . stay at Presiden' Truman's residence--not even the luxury of breakfast in bed. In fact, during their 45-hour stay at the Truman household -- Blair House -- they will be treated much the same as any overnight guests. Some details of arrangements be- ing made to put up the royal visi- tors who arrive in Washington Wed- nesday afternoon Oct. 31, were re- vealed yesterday by Mrs. James M. Helm, White House social sec- retary, at a press conference. The Princess and her husband will have adjoining bedrooms, each with a private bath and a double bed. They will also have a private sitting room. "The rooms are quite charming, and furnished throughout with an- tiques -- mostly 18th and early 19th century mahogany pieces," Mrs. Helm said. "Nothing new has been added." One bedroom has peach walls and an old fashioned four - poster bed with a canopy. Drapes, bed- covering and chair upholstering are a greenish-blue damask. The other bedroom has pale green walls 'with chintz draperies. The bed is modern-style. The small sitting room also is in pale green with old English print hang- ings, which Mrs. Helmsays "have always been. there." The beds will be made up with linen sheets. Bathroom fixtures w e r e modern- ized in the old mansion many years ago. Mrs. Beeckman -- (Continued from page 7) ALWAYS A JOY TO THE GIFT- GIVER . . . THE FOLLOW-UP THANK-YOU NOTE Dear Mrs. Beeckman: Mill you please answer a question on which we are divided: When someone gives you a gift in person and you open it and thank her en- thusiastically for it, then is it ne- cessary for you to write her a thank- you note also? Alice M. That depends . . . depends on what kind of person. you are. If youre the kind who doesn't take much trouble about showing your appreciation, or writing it, you of course won't put yourself out te: write a thank-you note. But if you're the endearlng kind of person who | is always willing to take a little ex- | tra effort to make the other per- | son feel that she or he has made a perfect choice of gift, you'll joy- ously reach for your pen and write, for example, "I just must tell you again how thrilled I am about the wonderful gift you gave me. Such a perfect pencil for my purse, and T've already begun to use it with de- light. You would choose my favor- ite color, and it's just the right size. Thank you, thank you, you dear Dorothy, always so kind to me!" I'll wager your friend will never forget wour thoughtfulness, QUESTIONS . . . SOME GOOD, SOME NOT Most questions are friendly: ones that show a pleasant interest in the other person. But some, alas, are barbed with inquisitiveness. The first kind make you popular, for be- ing interested in people is the first step toward making you liked. The second kind make you dreaded, for people will sidestep you just as you force them to sidestep _your mis- guided questions, Tirity and Quick Please your little lassie with a new cap 'n' mitten set!
