The Hurricanes opened their campaign | this year by winning right in Barrie, over the Memorial Cup-holding | Flyers, and right away the rest of the Junior "A" clubs got the idea | that this season, Bob Kinnear's Waterloo Hurricanes are not going | {brew who played his | baseball Peterborough Petes, to be push-overs. Harry Sinden | is missing from the defense department also, having got a painful | shoulder injury here on Saturday night." However, Oshawa's rearguard | should stil be in good hands. Nicholson and Penn are both performing | nicely and this injury to Sinden gives Doug. Moore a chance to show | what he can do. He's a chunky defenseman----short of condition at | present--but with lots of ambition. He failed to make the Marlies and | would simply love to get on-with the Generals--and help knock Marlies | off later in the season. IB! PE Tonight at the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, the Oshawa 'Red Raiders will be in action, with the Peterboorugh Orfuns as the visiting opposition. Frank Gnup, who guided Hamilton's Wildcats in top grid ranks a few years back, was the playing-coach of the Guelph Maple Leafs in Inter-County baseball this summer and a few weeks ago he turned up in the Liftlock City, as coach of their Intermediate ORFU team. According to reports--and proof is given in the licking Peterborough handed Ryerson Tech this past week-end --the Liftlock City gridders have improved by leaps and bounds since Gnup took over the coaching assignment. Oshawa opened this season's schedule with a victory over Peterborough right in the Liftlock City and the Red Raiders have kept on winning ever since. That 6-1 win in Cobourg over the Ghosts on Saturday puts Red Raiders on top of the league--tied with Cobourg in total points-- but out in front by themselves in the matter percentage. This is the best In- termediate ORFU team the Red Raider Club has ever had, in our opinion, combining youth, speed, experience and power, and they're strong in both at- tack and defensive play. Local rugby fans shouldn't miss this game at the Stadium tonight, called for eight-thirty o'clock. JL A BRIGHT BITS--It begins to look as if the Oshawa Minor baseball | teams are ashamed of getting de- feated. All season long they turn in their score-books without fail-- if they win--but when they lose, they "forget" to turn in the book. Oshawa Bantams lost in Toronto on Saturday to Stanley Park and last night, the Wholesale Bantams of this city dropped the second game of the series 9-3 to lose the OBA semi-final series in two-straight . . . In the other half of the double- header at the Stadium last night, Oshawa Victors suffered a 7-2 de- feat at the hands of the Port Hope Juveniles--and that ties up that | series at two wins apiece. It's ex- pected they'll settle the Lakeshore League Juvenile championship and | McCallum Trophy rights, in a 5th and deciding game, likely in Bow- manville this Saturday . .. "Luke" | Easter, hitting star of the Indians, | is going to have an operation on his | knee and if it works, he could re- | turn as one of the great hitters of the American League next season. | The death of Jockey Hugh Campbell adds just another mem- | ory item to the 1951 racing season and the tragedy will be deeply re- gretted in all Ontario tack rooms. - . A word for the Junior Transport- ers: Their manager also deserves great credit and no doubt some of thees boys will be Seniors in the next few years. I personally would like to see more Oshawa players on the Senior team and the only way it can come about is for Juniors to show they have it. Act like gentle- men and play the game.
