By RAE CORELLI Canadian Press Staff Writer Lunenburg, NS. (CP) '"Where,"" mused Capt. Henry Burke, Lunenburg master mariner, "are all the taut stately ships?" As he pondered the approaching death of the windjammer era that night in June, 1930, his close-hauled schooner cut a phosphorescent wake through the South Atlantic, heading for Havana out of Wey- mouth, N.S. On the eve of the annual Nova Scotia fisheries exhibition, Lunen- burg seamen of another age are - {are occupied with similar thoughts of what has become an accomplish- ed fact. Townsfolk gather next Sunday on the slopes of Terrace Hill for the yearly remembrance service dedi- cated to the men who went down to the sea in ships and did not re- turn. In their bowed heads will be thoughts of the days of the barques and brigs, schooners and brigan- tines. Capt. Burke chronicled those days in a requested. history of the fortunes of Lunenburg ships and men over a 50-year period. He was a veteran of 46 years under canvas, 147 trips to the West Indies alone --92 of them in square-riggers. FOR RENT... B. Brennan, Brechin. ARCHIE NEWMAN, Clerk, Township of Mara, UDNEY, Ontario, | captain, The captain has been dead these {nine years. His narrative now is lin possession of a son, Cecil E. | Burke of Halifax, Maritime traffic | chief of the Canadian Press and himself a veteran of ocean service under sail. "Steam competition," wrote the | "has driven those stately old square-riggers off the oceans." His amazingly accurate account details the fates of 104 Lunenburg sailing vessels. He served on many of them, either as mate or master. AROUND THE WORLD Tough South Shore skippers ranged far in their ships. Their pennants flew in ports around the world from the Falklands to Belle Isle, from Southampton to Seattle. The schooner Wilfred M., was shelled and sent to the bottom by the German raider Crown Princess Cecile. The fleet schooner Marshal Foch was sold to a novelist Zane Grey, later foundered and broke up on the rocky New Zealand coast. Another schooner, Marion J. Smith, foundered and went down while 'en route from Britain to Hali- fax. The Richard B. Silver sank on the homeward trip from the Argen- | tine. The barque Ich Dien burned {to the waterline in the harbor at | St. John's, Nfld. Capt. Burke was in command of the schooner Sceptre the night she was splintered and sunk by the steamer Roselands. He was a survivor of the aban- donment of the brig Donzella, reel- ing onto a reef in a blinding bliz- zard when last seen by her crew. Three of them were frozen to death in the 10 hours preceding rescue. The ships of which the captain 156 SIMCOE ST. S. Look at these Savings on Chesterfield and Sofa Bed Suites! Others "laid their ribs to rest on a rock-bound coast." Whole fleets were ripped to bits by Atlantic hurricanes, Few hardy Lunenburgers survived these sink- ings. The schooner Sceptre was dis- masted four #fmes. Each time, she was coaxed home under jury rig. The Narka lost her head gear, bowsprit and foresail in a heavy blow off Nantucket Lightship. She drifted for 12 days but "we finally arrived in Yarmouth, N.S., where we repaired our wreck and pro- ceeded to Portland, Me. ,with our cargo of molasses." "These ships were manned by hardy seamen who have placed Lunenburg on the front page of the history of wooden ships and iron men," the captain wrote. 'Will they ever come into their day again?" "I wonder." BRINGS DEATH Belgrade (Reuters) -- Jose Jos- matil, a Yugoslav professor, was drowned when a torrent, caused by a cloudburst, suddenly swept over what had been a dry river bed. PEPPER BOOM IS FORTUNE FOR GROWERS By ADRIENNE FARRELL New Delhi, Reuters--When you say '"'pass the pepper, please," you are putting a 4000 per cent profit into the pockets of Indian pepper growers. Watchmen are guarding the pep- per vines of India's Malabar coast today as if they were sprouting gold. The pepper boomgcame to India when war destroyed most of the pepper vines of Indonesia and gave India a virtual monopoly of the world's pepper trade. Exports of black pepper have PRESCRIPTIONS Qui:kly and Accurately Filled MITCHELL'S DRUG STORE 9 Simcoe N. Dial 3-3431 Stafford Bros. MONUMENTAL WORKS 318 Dundos St. E.. Fortunes are made--and lost -- in pepper speculation and prices on the market fluctuate by hun- dreds of rupees. Today, it costs a small grower in Travancore or Cochin about 100 rupees 19.60 to grow a "candy" 1200 pounds of pepper. Its sale price for export, without the addi- tion of duty, is over 4000 rupees $840 a candy Small wonder that the pepper growers of Malabar set guards by night around the precious vines which' have brought them fortunes, and which have netted the Indian government during the year $84- million in export duties. Growers expect their boom to last at least another two years be- fore the pepper estates .of Indon- esia come back into full production and competition brings prices down again. It takes five years to raise pep- per plant from a seedling to the production stage. And growers say that the young pepper vine, with | its heart-shaped leaves, creeping with frail tendrils around the trunk | of some stout tree, is as delicate and temperamental to rear as a sickly child. Malabar pepper growers get both black and white pepper from the vine; black pepper from the dried fruit; white from the same fruit when ripe, or from the black pepper with the dark outer skin removed.
