CORNELIUS BEECKMAN GLAMORIZING:- Pretty Smile Spells Beauty By HELEN FOLLETT " BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Rounded Shoulders By HELEN JAMESON "Would you cut a pretty figure?" Would yeu wear your clothes with splendor? Naturally. What wo- man wouldn't want to do that very thing? Then never let your chest flatten or send your shoulders for- ward. That bad habit--and it is & common one, especially among girls--weakens the muscles of the back which should sustain the spingl column. It will eventually lead to awkward, ugly lines. Not only that, but movements will lack grace. : Teachers of physical education in high schools make the alarming report that nine girls out of ten have slouchy posture. Correct car- riage is necessary to health as well as appearance, as it keeps the in- ternal organs in place and builds =~. strong musculature. It is a pity self-inflicted. "Every girl desires, girls haven't the will to work for loveliness. It is §tupid not to en- deavour to look one's best at all times. Good posture should be ever-present not just when one is togged up in grand dry goods. To slap a girl on the back, tell her to stand up straight, as some | members of the family, is to enrage her. Youth can't stand criticism. Youth resents it. : A better solution is to give a girl a full-length mirror. With the use of a hand mirror she will observe the lines of her figure, sides and back. Observing that hump on her shoulders she may be appalled and make an effort to overcome it. All she has to do is to pull up her back bone, draw in the abdomen, lift the chest, give the arms an easy pose. There are simple exercises that will strengthen back muscles that have gone slack. Here is one that is called "The Chanticleer," the movements being like those of the barnyard king when he awakens people in the early dawn with noisy greetings. Double each arm up itself until the slightly clasped hand rests in front of the corresponding shoul- der top. Move the double-up arms up and down twenty .or thirty times, keeping the chest high. Rest, take several long, deep breaths. ith the hands still on the shoul- ers, flap the elbows back as far as possible. Then bring the el-) bows forcibly forward. These movements will help fill out hollows around the shoulder joints, a defect in this girls who have rounded shoulders. All reaching and stretching move- ments are helpful. I read the play between scenes of the picture, 'which is the worst way to read anything, particularly a, play with as many transitions as 'Salesman.' .| 'Well, I couldn't make much out of it and quit after reading the first act. Actually, they wanted my wife (Florence Eldridge) for the play and would take me, too. But I turned it down and so she decided to, also. They all thought I was crazy, and rightfull so. CONVULSIONS A CHILD in convulsions always brings to the doctor an emer- gency call from 'the frightened parents, Frequently, by the time the physician arrives, the seizure has passed, but there still remains much for him to do. The child loses consciousness and his body suddenly stiffens and be- comes rigid. At the beginning of the convulsion the child may give a shriek or hold his breath for from a few seconds to a few minutes and then begin to breathe in a labored manner. Meanwhile, all the muscles of the body jerk and twitch in re- peated spasm. With the end of the convulsion, there may be an in- voluntary movement of the child's bowels or urination, There are many causes for con- vulsions in children, the most com- mon being severe infection with a high fever. Epilepsy, due to some form of brain irritation, is the most next common cause in young chil- dren, and the most frequent one in those in the 10-to-16-year age group, Birth injuries may also be a cause of convulsions. Tetany, due or cases in which the child has a sponsible, In many instances, an electro- encephalogram, a reading taken with an instrument which makes tracings of the brain waves, may be of help in making a diagnosis. If a high fever is present, the cause should be sought and the proper antibiotic drugs given to eliminate the infection. If the fever is due to one of the conta- gious diseases, it may be necessary to reduce the temperature by sponging the child with a mixture of half warm water and half al- cohol, The use of a cool tap water enema (injection into the lower bowel) may also be necessary. An ice bag to the head may be of benefit. Certain drugs, such as ase pirin, may help to reduce the tem- perature, If the convulsions are due to epilepsy or birth injury, it will be necessary to treat the specific con- dition. In all cases of epilepsy, if there is no difficulty in breath- ing, the use of small doses of seda- tive drugs, given by mouth, may be of great help in preventing fur- ther convulsions. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS M. T. M.: What are spurs? Can hey be removed? Answer: Spurs are growths on bones, Usually, spurs of the heel may be removed successfully. How- ever, spurs of the joints are not, as a rule, easily removed, to low lime or calcium in infants, | low blood sugar, may also be re- Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My husband and I have been in- vited to my boss' engagement party. I have never been to an en- gagement party, and I don't know if I should buy a gift. If I should buy a gift, for whom should I buy it, and what kind of gift should it be? Should the gift be sent to the house where the party is going to be, or should we bring the gift with us? (I have met the bride-to-be, and she is a very kind person.) Foreigner It is not customary, and it is generally not considered neces- sary, for a guest to give an en- gagement gift. Relatives, perhaps some intimate friends, sometimes give engagement presents, but usually not casual friends. How- ever, if you find out that engage: ment presents are the custom in your - community, you and your husband may properly take an en- &gagment present with you to the party . . . under the circumstances, it should be something simple and not expensive, a present for the bride-to-be, something for her per- sonal use or an item for her trous- | seau. "+s Mpatnral, Proper of Course, For A Girl To Show Her Engage- ment Ring Dear Mrs. Beeckman: I have recently become engaged, and would like to know the proper procedure about showing my ring to our relatives and to my friends. Is it up to me to show my ring to everyone, or should I just wait until they ask to see it? If they know that I am engaged, isn't it up to them to ask to see my en- gagement ring? Pat. "The natural thing to do" is the proper procedure here. That is, it is natural, and of course proper, for a relative or friend, either an intimate friend or a quite casual friend, who knows you are engag- ed and knows or observes that you have an engagement ring, to ask to see it. And if the relative or friend doesn't ask to see it, it is natural for you to ask gaily if they would like to see it . . . 'Oh, Sallie, look . . . my engagement ring!" Everyone is interested in ro- mance, and in an engagement ring which is the shining symbol of romance . . . and it is quite proper for you to 'please your public" by showing your ring to all interested. But be gay and high- hearted about it, not stuffy, not giving the impression given by so many engaged girls that no one before them ever had ap engage- ment ring. Have fun showing it-- "I'm so happy, Betty, and I just can't wait to show you the engage- ment ring Bob gave me!" Don't be at all bothered by the pros and cons of propriety about this, the question as to whom it's '"'up to" . . . just be joyous about your hap- piness and your ring, and show it to all those who you know would naturally be interested. Don't Write Reply To, Reception Invitation On Card Enclosed With Wedding Gift ' Dear Mrs. Beeckman: Would it be proper for me to send our acceptance to an invita tion to a wedding reception (fol- lowing church wedding) on the card to be enclosed wth our wed- ing gift? For example: "Our love to you both, and best wishes. We're looking forward to coming to your wedding on the tenth." Maria B. No, this is a careless and dis- courteous way to accept this ime portant invitation . . . a very shoddy procedure indeed. Replying to the invitation is one thing . , . sending your wedding present is quite another thing. Your reply to the wedding invitation is the busi- ness of the bride's mother . . . it is she who must keep track of the acceptances and the regrets, so that she will know definitely how many guests to provide for. But the wedding present is the bride's responsibility, to be thanked for at her very earliest opportunity. Salads should be a daily "must* on the menu rather than a hote weather special.
