SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 198% THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTx PAGE NINE REGENT "ROYAL WEDDING", COLORFUL NEW MUSICAL, COMING TO THE REGENT THEATRE Fred Astaire is dancing (on the ceviling!), Jane Powell is singing a royal parade of new song hits, Peter Lawford, Sarah Churchill (actress- daughter of the famous Winston) and Keenan Wynn are respectively involved in the romantic and comedy hi-jinks, That's the goed news of M-G-M's latest Technicolor musical, "Royal ~~ Wedding", which brings king-sized entertainment to the Re- gent Theatre next Friday. There is melody and merriment in every sequence of this smartly- designed offering, which unfolds a captivating story of a brother-and- gister dance team who, after scoring on the Broadway stage, are asked to at their triumphs during the eelebration of a royal wedding in London. Ellen (Jane Powell), distaff member of the team, becomes in- volved in a shipboard romance with he jaunty Lord Brindale (Peter Law- ford). Tom (Fred Astaire) meets his romantic waterloo once they reach England, in the person of the Lon- don dancer, Anne Ashmond (Sarah Churchill). Every musical-comedy has to have a problem, and in this instance, the problem is whether Tom and Ellen should resist their ro- mantic inclinations in order to pre- vept the dancing team from break- up. The conflict reaches its cli- max amid London's colorful royal wedding celebration, and you will have to see "Royal Wedding" to find out whether Tom and Ellen resist or not. Seldom has an M-G-M musical of- fered the plethora of song and 'dance delight with which this stellar production abounds. At this date it is hardly necessary to enlarge on Fred Astaire's dancing wizardry. Sufficient to say that he executes his footwork with his usual fastidious dexterity in a wide variety of dances, with the nimble Miss Powell as his artner for the first time, and rings down the house with two original specialty numbers One, titled "You're All the Tera to Me", has him dancing on the walls and ceil- infg of a room; a second, called "Sunday Jumps', has him running wild amidst the parallel bars, punch- ing bags and other paraphernalia of a gymnasium! It is Astaire in top form. The attractive and talented Jane Jowell fulfills her mest ambitious assignment as Astaire's song-and- dance partner, and more than holds her own with her, formidable co-star in a brilliant array of songs written for the new production by Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner, with the latter also responsible for the screen play. Standouts in the musical pa- rade are 'Every Night at Seven', "How Coud You Believe Me", "Open Your Eyes", 'Happiest Day of My, Life", '"Too Late Now", "What a Lovely Day For a Wedding" and the colorful "I Left My Hat in Haiti", in which Astaire and Miss Powell go Rative with eighty island dancing ris. Produced by Arthur Freed, who has contributed an impressive list of musical hits to the screen, and dir- ected by Stanley Donen, 'Royal Wedding" provides entertainment fit for a King. Bob Hope and gorgeous Marilyn Maxwell find time for billing and cooing during the hilarious doings in "The Lemon Drop Kid" Bob's new Para- mount comedy which opens on Sunday midnight at a special preview ,show- ing at the Regent Theatre. PLAZA "THE SECRET OF CONVICT LAKE," NEW-TYPE WESTERN, Glenn Ford, Gene Tierney, Ethel Barrymore, Zachary Scott Co-Star A new type western melodrama, "The Secret of Convict Lake," starr- ing Glenn Ford, Gene Tierney, Ethel Barrymore and Zachary Scott, will open at the Plaza Theatre on Friday. This action-drama was inspired by an incident that occurred in 1871 at Monte Diablo Lake, California--now named 'Convict Lake" because of it --and deals fictionally with the thrill- ing consequences that come from a band of escaped convicts taking re- fuge in a community momentarily inhabited only by women, most of whom are starving for male affec- tion. In the course of its action, 'The Secret of Convict Lake" manages to stir up three romances, a murder and five killings to make it a taut drama of suspense. The large supporting cast including Ann Dvorak, Barbara Bates, Cyril Cusack, Richard Hylton, Helen Westcott, Jeanette Nolan, Ruth Donnelly and Harry Carter creates a diverse set of characters, giving the picture its unusual twists. Three new romantic teaems, un- usual for a western film, are intro- duced in the picture. Paired for the first time were Glenn Ford and Gene | Tierney. Zachary Scott and Ann Dvorak provide an off-trail romance | and Barbara Bates, recently voted | the most promising young actress of the year by the Foreign Press Asso- ciation, for her performance in 'All About Eve," and Richard Hylton make the third pair of lovers. Producer Frank P. Rosenberg and Director Michael Gordon filmed a part of the picture near the locale of the historic incident in the High Sierras of east-central California and | SUNDAY AFTER TECHNI Ge THE SARS TONIGHT UMGRR rr OSHAWA SEPTEMBER 2nd SPECIAL ATTRACTION FOR THIS PERFORMANCE ONLY SUDAN MARIA MONTEZ MONDAY SEPT.
