It is unlikely he will ever be able to re-enter the country as he has no Canadian passport--or French visas--and was travelling on a safe conduct, issued him by minister plenipotentiary in Montreal, which contains the recommendation that de Bernonville be allowed permanent residence in Brazil. On three occasions this country has officially shown its displeasure with the man who was decorated for gallantry while fighting with the French troops in World War 1, and who was found guilty of turning Maquis members over to Nazi torture during World War II. Twice since the Count and his family entered this country under an assumed 'name back in 1946 the government had ordered him on the grounds he was a political refugee. o leave. Twice he has successfully fought the actions, Right now the outcome of a third such legal fight is awaited. ~--Central Press Canadian. Scott will day. Short Supply Is Headache To Snail King Barr, France (AP) -- A supply crisis is creeping up on the French snail industry, and it's no joke to Adolphe Willm, He's the "'snail king' of north- eastern France, and his factory supplies processed snails as far as Paris and Lyon. It is one of the big money earners in this town near Strasbourg, Many tourists take at least one eating snails, always drenched in garlic. They cost be- tween $1.10 and $1.40 a dozen in restaurants. Although snails are prepared in France, they are mostly imported alive from Germany -- 3000 or a year. For 19 years, Willm says, German law his pro- tected the supply by declaring a closed season part of each year. "Unfortunately," Willm said, "a lot of Germans acquired a taste for snails in the four years they oc- cupied France. We used to get all we needed from Wurttemberg and Baden. Now we have to bring them from all over Western Germany, the price is going up all the Purchasing agents in German towns send their supplies to a central snail depot at Kehl, just across the Rhine from Strasbourg. From there they go largely to to. the snail canneries of Burgundy. During the season, which runs from October to March, Willm eats snails three or four times a week. He recommends them cold riseling wine, which he makes himself and sells as far away as San Francisco. At 54, Willm has always been in the wine-and-snail business. His 27-year-old son is in it with him, and a grandson, he hopes, ith a nice will CAREFUL PROCESS The snails are starved for 10 to remove impurities. Then they are plunged into boiling water to kill them and get them out of their shells. Shells and snails then part company, to meet again only at the end of the process. A strong broth is brewed from the snails, great virtues. It is highly season- ed, 'with herbs and a lot of garlic.
