BEAUTY FOR YOU:- Hollywood GLAMORIZING:- A Physician Fun Can Be Had at Make-Up Bar By HELEN In Uncle Sam's domain more than a billion dollars a year are spent for cosmetics and services in beauty shops. The money is not wasted. The better a woman looks, the bet- ter she feels, and the more confi- dence she has in herself. When Grannie was a girl these were per- haps three or four "hairdressing parlors" in every large city. Their main business was that of selling hair goods with which the custom- ers supplemented sparse locks. On great occasions one had a profes- sional hair-do. - Facials were un- heard of, and most women attended to their fingernails themselves. Now the business of turning ugly ducklings into swans, and making swans even prettier, is one of our large industries. No village is so small that it doesn't have its beauty shops. The owners attend conven- tions, keep in touch with' every late whim and frenzy. Just think what our grandmothers missed! If they had stringy hair, nothing could be done about it. Curling irons, crimp- ers and kid curlers made waves that disappearen at the fall of a rain- drop. A fairly new institution is the cosmetic bar. Nearly all department stores in the cities have them. They present a stage-like picture. There are the beauty supplicants--young, old and middle-aged--sitting before the mirrors of dressing tables, at- tended by solicitous salesgirls of glamorous appearance. Perhaps you fancy that the customers look self- conscious or sheepish. Nothing like that. . This is a serious matter. If you are going to embellish your complexion -- and that you must do if you are to march in the good- looks parade -- you must have the right materials, know the correct technique. Powder is blended to order. Tests are made. Though there are many shades from which to choose, it isn't always easy to find the right one and too many shoppers are a bit haphazard when stalking toile- tries. Into a silver bowl are placed the ingredients that are to give you a becoming complexion. One mar- vels at the different colors--ochre, JAMESON [sas Gos EE Sai ee Distributed by King Features Syndicate. The cosmetic bar is a fairly new institution * oo flesh, apricot, rachelle, ivory, green and mauve. The attendants know all the tricks. The result is tested again and again, darkened or light- ened or given another color slant, according to requirements. Rouge and lipstick are selected with professional deliberation. The color is considered carefully, and s0 is the manner of application. The placing of rouge should not be done casually; it can make or unmake a pretty face. The lip glow must be applied softly, evenly. And this is the nice part. Costs you nothing, just what you pay for your beauty props. WHAT SHOULD 1 DO ABOUT Introducing My Stepmother By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs, Beeckman: I am in my early teens, and I have a problem which I wish you would advise me about. I live in a © very small town where everyone knows everyone else, and everyone knows that my "mother" is really my "stepmother." I am an only child, and when 1 was six months old, my mother died, and snortiy afterward my father married my mother's sister. She has always been simply marvelous to me. I have always thought of her as my mother, and have always called her "Mother." I love her very dearly. Here there was no question about introductions, for everyone knew. But next year I am going away to school and then, at school and probably other places, there will be more and more introductions. I want to introduce her as "my mo- ther." Would this be proper, or must I say "stepmother?' ANNE M. Please follow your loving inclina- tion, dear girl . . . it is proper, very naturally and very warm-hearted- ly proper, in the circumstance when one has known no other mother but fhe stepmother to whom one fcels a high and deep and abiding devo- tion, to refer, in introductions and other occasions, to "my mother." (And the same applies to the use of "my father," when the only father one has ever known is the step- father to whom one is deeply de- voted). Omitting the "step" and using only "mother" is the perfect way for you to pay the perfect tri- bute to this beautiful and real re- lationship. And I am sure your mo- ther 'would lovingly approve of 'his gesture of yours to her sister, who has been so abidingly good and kind to you, so "like a mother' to you that she deserves this dear name, MOTHER AND FATHER GIVE ENGAGEMENT PRESENTS TO SON AND HIS FIANCEE Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My husband and I would like to know if it is proper to give gifts at our son's engagement ' party, which will be this month, in New York City. He is in the Air Force. If it is proper for us to give gifts, please suggest the kind of gift. H.N. Do you mean that this is the en- gagement party? What -- is Durante going to summer school? CHANGED"THE NAME "No," he corrected. "I been over to Loyola, making a short for them to play on TV before their football games. A woithy cause, They had a lot of trouble wit me because I couldn't pronounce the name of the school. They kept tellin' me it's 'Loyola' but I kept sayin' "Lyola.' How about that? -- I changed the name of the univoisity." What does he think of TV? "It's the most amazin' thing that ever happened to me," he said. "You know, when you're in radio or the movies, you get the usual kind of fan mail -- 'You're my favorite! Will you send me an autographed pichuh?'--and that's all. Buf the mall I get from TV is different. The people treat you like you was one of their family. I guess it makes a lot of difference when you're comin' right into their livin' rooms." He admitted that TV was a lot of work. Memorizing is a painful chore for him; he takes a week to put an hour's script to memory. "And I'm on most of the time," he added. Suggestions for this present: a daytime purse, or evening bag; a piece of jewelry, real or costume; a vanity case; a photograph frame (for future use to frame the wed- ding photograph); a pen or pencil, perhaps a matching set, and per- haps engraved with her name and the date of the announcement of the engagement; travel clock or dresser clock; jewel case; dreseser set; lingerie for her trousseau, om- broidered with her first name or her initials; comb, in case, for her evening bag. If you mean what would be ap- propriate to give your son on this so-important occasion, the gift might be: a wrist watch, pen and pencil set; wallet; or you and your husband might prefer to give him a check to buy for himself some- thing he would find especially use- ful, especially "longed-for." BUNDESEN, M.D. IVY POISONING DURING the outdoor months, ivy poisoning continues to be a major problem so far as those sensitive to it are concerned. There are many who can come in contact with this wild plant with perfect safety, but others are so easily affected as' to develop the charac- teristic skin inflammation on direct contact, or even from others having ivy poisoning. . When ivy poisoning is suspected, the exposed area of the skin should be washed immediately with warm soap and water. This washing should be prolonged and may well 4 be followed with an application of alcohol or sodium perborate cream, which will remove any of the oily substances that cause irritation. If this is done immediately after con- tact with the ivy plant, the effects of the poisoning will be greatly lessened. REPEATED ATTACKS In individuals who have a his- tory of repeated attacks of ivy poi- soning, desensitization with an ivy extract early in spring may be of some help. When the extract is given by mouth, it may produce an itching in the rectal area, Therefore, the method of choice for the admin- istration of the extract is by in- jection under the skin. Once the disease is contracted, solutions of lead salts or aluminum acetate should be used on the skin, Either of these will slowly neutral- ize the ivy poison. However, such treatment is not totally effective. SOOTHING LOTION After about four days, when the skin becomes dry or scaly, a lotion to prevent itching may be applied. Care should be taken not to get soap or water on the parts affected until they are fully healed, for this may cause the occurrence of a lo- calized skin infection. Recently, two chemical sub- stances, known as ammonium sulf- amate and dichlorophenoxyactic acid, have been shown to destroy ivy plants. If these substances were used in parks, forest preserves, and woods to eliminate the ivy plant, it is probable that there would be much less ivy poisoning. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS B. K.
