(CP) -- A Chicago scientist says there are better ways of solving stratospheric mysteries | than with the aid of V-2 rockets loaded with instruments. Dr. A, B. Meinel of the University of Chicago's Yerkes observatory ex- pressed belief yesterday that scien- tists can do a better job with their own equipment and laboratories. Dr. Meinel is attending a confer- ence of auroral physicists at the University of Western Ontario, Explaining his views in an inter- view, he said a rocket can achieve a maximum height of only 100 miles while a scientists on the ground can peer 800 miles into space with considerable accuracy. Each rocket flight costs about $225,000 -- another factor in favor of earthbound observation, he said. Dr. Meinel admitted that in mea- suring the temperature and color of particles from the ground there is a margin of error and room for speculation, but there are cross checks to determine accuracy. Dr. Meinel was responsible last winter for the most significant dis- covery in auroral physics since the end of the Second World War. He proved with an instrument he made himself that particles of hydrogen ejected from the sun strike the earth's upper atmosphere with ter- rific force, causing displays of light such as those commonly known as the northern lights.
