And the national government has banned construction of hotels until the housing shortage is met. Temperance groups in Victoria sre concerned over the effect the games may have on the state's liquor regualtions, which now limit public-house operations to the afternoon hours between 2 and 6 pm. Prohibition groups attacked the Olympics bitterly when it was hinted that these hours might be lengthened during the games. But plans have gone ahead for the $8,100,000 project to provide a suitable Olympic site. The Aus- tralian Olympic Federation formed an organizing company at its spring meeting to supervise neces- sary construction and administer the games. Permanent concrete stands to accommodate 60,000 spectators will be built around an area now used for trotting races. Circular cinder running tracks will replace the present trotting tracks. On the north side of the show- a $562,500 swimming pool be built. Three large buildings will be constructed for wag lift- ng, gymnastics boxing and fenc- 8 Special tunnels will be sunk to Pring tram lines into the show- grounds. Streets in the area will be renovated to provide for a cir- cular motion of road traffic. A nearby racecourse will be convert- ed into a parking space for 10,000 cars, Cycling events will take place at Olympic Park, within the Mel- bourne city area. High Cost of Living Springfield, Colo. (AP) -- Her- man James Mason is doing all right for a lad of 10 years. He weighs 267 pounds. He is 50 inches around the waist and wears a size 12 shoe and a size 18 shirt. Herman's usual breakfast con- sists of six eggs, two quarts of milk and a pound of bacon. The other -meals are proportionately large, and his food bill for a' week comes t6 about $50. Major Problem Here Jet Streams May Be Clue |In Forecasts Toronto (CP) -- A study of the | two jet streams that swirl around | may hold the key to suctessful long-range weather forecasting. That's what Dr. D. P. Mcln- tyre, Toronto meteorologist, says in an article in the current issue of Physics in Canada. He writes that jet streams have long waves and short waves. "The basis for lenger range forecasting lies in the forecasting of the position of the long waves, While we co not know where the short waves which roll along the polar front will be at any time within the next day or two, we know the general path they must follow and, therefore, the general pattern of the weather." THE Air Defenc At $1 Billion New York (CP) -- The New York Times says today the de- tails of an elaborate new network of military airfields for Western Europe's defence have been dis- closed in London. It says the pro- ject will cost nearly $1 billion. In a London dispatch the Times says the final dicision on cost sharing may be made by the North Atlantic Treaty council meeting in Ottawa late in September. France will have built 17 up - to date fields on her own territory and five in the French sector of Western Germany by the first of next year, the story says.
