' THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1951 A Physician Advises You By BERMAN M°BUNDESEN, M.D. A DANGEROUS CONDITION UCTION of the neck of the bladder is fairly common in middle-aged women. If taken care of promptly, the condition can be relieved rather simply; unfortun- ately, women neglect it until & great deal of damage has been done through a back-flow of urine into the kidney. Women may have a retention of urine at any age after 20 years, but #t is more common in those be- tween the ages of 30 and 60 years. LONG-STANDING INFECTION No definite cause of this condi- tion has been found. However, long- standing infection may produce a narrowing of the opening between the bladder and the outside. Gon- orrhea, bladder tumors, tumors of the womb and hernia of the bladder may also cause urine retention. Patients with this disorder com- plain chiefly of frequency of urina- tion, with pain and burning. They occurred, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS J. M.: Can a fluoroscopic exam- ination of the upper part of the ab- domen detect an ulcer or must an X-ray also be taken? Answer: In determining the pres- ence of an ulcer, barium is usually given by mouth and the patient . An ulcer may be de- tected by fluoroscopic examination, although most physicians confirm this by X-ray. GLAMORIZING:- a If the dark-eyed brunette finds that her hair 'is changing some- what in color, taking on auburn lights or even getting darker at the roots, it does not disturb her. Not so blondes! To them it is a hint of tragedy. They would, above everything else, remain golden girls, retain the sunny mop of their childhood days. But nature may take a hand as the years go by. Darkening of the golden thatch may be due to improper and care- less shampooing. Girls of high school age are seldom qualified to WHAT SHOULD 1 DO ABOUT» Tipping Following Visit ? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Beeckman: ter my husband and very close friends couple who have a t the shore, They are plan- invite us for several week- summer, and speak about from the village whom they for the summer every year. we go to visit them, should we tip this maid, or would it be better taste to take her a Present. My advice is that you give this maid a tip rather than taking her present . . . at least for the first one or two visits, and then, if you wish, you might take her a small present and give her a tip also. May Properly Wear Simple After- noon Dress, Long or Ankle-Length El ft 288 in early autumn. I wore a suit I was married before, but . - . A For your afternoon church wed- ding it is 'entirely proper for you to wear a floor-length (or the new- er ankle-length) simple afternoon dress of, say, a not-too-light shade or a "jewel tone" that is most be- . » small hat and Woman does not Use any Part of First Husband's Name bear Mrs. Beeckman: I am a widow, and will soon be married to a widower. After our wedding should I use my present married surname for a middle name? Or how should I use this name? --C. After your marriage you drop all parts of the name of your first husband . . . just as you should no longer wear your first wedding ring. The Fiancee's Mother Writes to the Fiance's Mother Dear Mrs. Beeckman: My daughter has just become to a young man whose parents, whom we have never met, live quite a distance from here. I should like to write a letter to them. Would this be out of place? If you approve, would you please be so kind as to help me with sug- gestions as to the wording of such a note? (His parents will be at the wedding, which will be in sev- eral months.) --A. R. 5 I am so glad that you are not "standing on ceremony," waiting for the young man's parents to make the first social move . . . even though this is their social duty. So often the parents of the young man are unaware that they should at once write or telephone (if a call is not possible because of distance + or for any other reason) to the young lady after their son has told them of the engagement, this call or letter welcoming her into their family. But it's a proper and gracious and charming gesture for you to write the parents of your daughter's fiance . . . and this can be the so-important establishment of the relationship between the two families. Your mother-heart will guide you in telling them what you know they will want to be told: how hap- py you and your husband are about the engagement, how devoted much u him and his you are to their son and how achievements, how deeply in love "our two young people are"; then chat about the wedding plans so far, and tell them how very much you and your family are looking forward to meeting them at the wedding (welcoming them to your home, if this plan is possible for you). Don't hold back . . . theyll be delighted with every word you write to them about this "favorite subject". you can so happily share with each other! Hollywood Highlights Hollywood (AP) -- "Two Loves Have I," chants Josephine Baker on her triumphant tour. '"My coun- tree and Pa-ree." And the United States' most famous between - wars expatriate sings it like she means it. La belle Josephine has been so heartened by the reception on her return that she says she intends to divide her time henceforth between the United States and France. "I am so happy--I open my own night club, the Chez Josephine Baker, in New York in October," she said with Gallic inflections. "And then, perhaps, there may be Hollywood." ; After her smash two-week stand here, movie moguls are bidding high for hep services. The film colony flocked to her local per- formances. She broke all records for the Hillstreet theatre, netting $45,000 in two weeks for her troupe. Her take was at least $30,000. Her business manager, Ned Schuyler, who nas vpeen mulling over the movie offers, says: "It isn't # question of whether the movies want Josephine, but whether they want her enough to make the kind-of movie consistent with her way of thinking on the matter of segregation." They don't use enough of the shampoo agent, or they select a kind that is harsh, or perhaps they don't tinse prop- erly. A, rousing shampoo by an experienced, well-trained beauty operator will tell them how the treatment should be given, They're fighting a combination of atmos- pheric dust, dead skin scales from the scalp, exudations of sebaceous and sweat glands. These make a fearsome combination that resists careless shampoo treatments. Oiliness is more unpleasant on light hair than on any other type of tresslocks. Hence, shampoos must be more frequent. If the hair is dry, as often hap- pens when the blonde ducky has been playing with the peroxide bottle, it is a good idea to have an oil treatment the night before the shampoo. This can be accom- plished easily enough at home, The home treatment is better because the lubricant can remain on all night, while in the beauty shop it is usually on only during the hour that is devoted to the facial. Start with a brushing, using a narfow brush with 'bristles set in groups. The purpose is to remove surface dust and stimulate the blood streams in the scalp, Treat a strand at a time with a rolling motion. Part the hair at various places, trickle on the oil from a large medicine dropper. When it has been distributed, massage the scalp briskly. Rubs the ends of the hair between oiled palms.
