Rampaging Truck Kills Undertaker Port Arthur (CP)-- A brakeless 10-ton-gravel truck careered at a 50-mile-an-hour clip through busy Main Street Saturday killed an un- dertaker and plunged off a wharf into Thunder Bay. The driver leaped to safety. The vehicle smashed into a light truck at an intersection and killed the driver, Alfred Tocheri, a Port Arthur undertaker. Driver of the gavel truck, Sinnto Lahti, 43, of Port Arthur, told po- lice the brakes gave out as he travelled down a steep hill ap- proching Main street. Lahti said he threw the truck in- to low gear when he found the breakes wouldn't work, but the heavy vehicle gained speed as it travelled down the steep hill. Shoppers scurried for safety as the truck swerved in and out of heavy traffic. Lahti said he hit the truck as Tocheri moved across on the green traffic signal. Lahti leaped from the vehicle as it neared the wharf. ! Nova Scotia Woman Faces Murder Count Bridgewater, N. 8. (CP)-- Mrs. Grace Smith, 32, was charged to- day with the rifle murder of 44- year-old Alphonse Bizeau. RCMP laid the charge while Mrs. Smith remained in hospital at Halifax, suffering a wound which police said she received when she turned the rifle on herself. Police said an argument started shortly after Bizeau and Mrs. Smith went into the woods on what they termed a beer-bottling exped- ition. During an ensuing scuffle, the .32 calibre rifle which Bizeau carried discharged and Bizeau dropped dead. Mrs. Smith's 13-year-old daugh- ter said she saw her mother turn- ing the rifle on hersel??"She said she grabbed her mother's arm but the bullet ripped into Mrs, Smith's shoulder. Police Catch 4 Suspects In Marshland Ambherstburg (CP) -- Provincial police are holding three break-in suspects captured in a Detroit Ri- ver marsh after a four - hour search early yesterday. A fourth suspect was vicked up at his home here, his clothing soaking wet. Police said the our, Edward Ger- vais, 28, Wilfred Dubreuil, 25, and James Burns, 24, all of Windsor, and Joseph Triolet of Amherstburg will be charged with an attempted break-in at an Amherstburg groce- ry store. Provincial police constable Geor- ge Hannah broke up the attempted break-in aftter two Amherstburg re- sidents almost simultaneously re- ported four men acting suspicious- ly near the store. Constable Hannah sped to the scene and caught sight of the four men as they fled in a car. Con- stable Morris. Nimigon took up the chase and found the car abandoned near an outside phone booth. Near the booth was a heavy crowbar. Police from Essex and other centres answered a radio call and searched the area. Four hours later, the three Windsor men were arrested after police traced their steps along the muddy banks of the river. Triolet was arrested at his Amherstburg home later, his clothing still wet. Windsor police said the car aban- doned near the telephone booth had been stolen in Windsor a few hours before the attempted break-in. Negligence Charge Laid Crystal Beach (CP) -- Town council, already in the midst of a hubbub about reported crime and corruption, was accused of negli- gence Saturday. Chairman William Holmes of the school board charged that the council was negligent in raising some $176,000 for a school and In Beach Row allowing construction to cease be- cause of a temporary money short- ge. He said the councillors under- took to build the school and it was up to them to raise the money. ""So far they have failed to meet such commitments and it is esti- mated that to gel construction underway again is going to cost an extra $25,000. The school building, about one- fourth completed, was started last March. Construction was stopped two weeks ago when council said it was temporarily short of funds, Want to buy, sell or ? -- A classified ad and the deal is made, are not inflati When should a family borrow A family should borrow only when a loan is the best solution to a money problem, For example, to pay old debts, medical expenses, taxes, fuel, education, car or home repairs. SOLVING MONEY PROBLEMS At HFC--Household Finance--we believe a family should borrow only when, by careful planning, the money problem can be re- solved, and the loan repaid in an orderly manner. When a'family borrows under these circumstances, it is simply 'renting' money on terms it can afford. At HFC you may borrow $50, $250, $500 or more on your signature, without bankable security.
