CamreeLL SPORT SNAPSHOTS (0 ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE RACING HERE ON MONDAY | | HORM, BACRELL™ HOMER IN 8TH INNING WINS FOR PEDLARS In case you hadn't realized it yet--the 1951 summer season is about, Oshawa Pedlars - scored three| Bill Sidey scored the first run singled in the 7th but was nipped | there were only four putouts made me-third gone. This Dominion Day holiday week-end is a definite marker in the summer season and sport fans of Oshawa and district have a wide variety of entertainment from which to choose. There's only one major sports attraction here today, a Viaduct Major League baseball fixture, at the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, this evening at eight o'clock when Toronto Staffords visit the Oshawa Merchants. The 700 or so fans who took in Thursday night's thriller here will be back, with about as many more, no doubt. Saturday night games are apparently very popular now in Oshawa and the game between Staffords hooked up in a pitching duel that|Bus Benson singled and Merchants should be & good one. In the morning, at 10.30 o'clock, Oshawa Merchants are playing Toronto Croftons in a Viaduct League schedule game, at the Ki Civic M ial Stadium, Morning. games on holidays always seem to bring out a big turnout of fans and Monday's game should be no exception. In the even- ing, the Junior Transporters have a North Toronto League game here at the Stadium, eight o'clock under the floodlights, with New Toronto Silverts providing the opposition. This is another baseball game that should be a real attraction as Silveris have given the Transporters plenty of trouble, Over at the Lawn Bowling Club, starting on Monday morning and lasting all day, there will be a mixed rink tournament in progress, which should see a big entry of the.top lawn bowlers of Oshawa and neighboring clubs on hand. * + * Alexandra Park will be the scene of Oshawa's annual "Dominion Day" sports attraction on Monday afternoon, It's the Canadian dirt- track motorcycle racing championships and races, being staged as usual | [tle all the way But Bagnell gave up {only two hits while Benson allow- ed five, two of these, a triple and *a homer, coming in 'the 8th inning to win the game for Pedlars, | frame, on a hit and two sacrifices | but couldn't get him home. | "Wart" Barker tripled in the 4th | {but there were two out and he | didn't get home. The speed | trials and eliminations will be held during the morning and then early in the afternoon, the program of actual races will get under way. They have trophies and prizes as well as championship titles to compete for and the finest motorcycle riders & Canada will be on hand for this thrilling event. They had nearly 12,000 on hand one July 1st about two | years ago and present indications are that this record will be broken | on Monday. The sport fans come from far-and-wide to see this spect- tacle, to enjoy the thrills and watch the spills. 'An exciting sport at any time, dirt-track racing for championship honors is sure to provide thrills galore. The Kinsmen Club members have been working hard for this event and every member has a job to do on Monday. Proceeds go to the various charity projects this local service club carries out in the city and district, not the least of which is assisting in the finances of the Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium's floodlights. This constitutes a real attraction and good cause for every sport fan and of course, this is Oshawa's big event for the week-end. +* +* * Considering that the holiday week-end's sports program actually got started last night, it can be safely stated that said program got off to a flying start. Down at the Stadium, Normie Bagnell hit a homer in the 8th inning to score one of his mates ahead of himself and win his own game, 3-1 over the Danforth Hotel squad. Bus Benson and Bagnell hooked up in another fine pitching duel which saw the visitors break in front early and lead 1-0 until Bill Yourke- vich's triple opened the big 3-run rally in the 8th, Up at Alexandra Park, in the Major Softball League, which is producing almost un- believable keen competition in every game, the Lions Club Juniors tied the score at 3-3 against Parts & Service Inters. in the last half of the 9th inning and then won the game in. the 10th frame with a clincher. This 4-team league is certainly putting up a sizzling race with every game a toss-up. The local softball fans are becoming aware of the fact too and the attendance at the south diamond up at Alexandra Park is increasing steadily every night, ' . +> 4 + : BRIGHT BITS -- The next Executive Meeting of the OHA will be held in September--here in Oshawa. At the meeting last week-end in Windsor, Oshawa Generals drafted Gordon Deeth from their own | Junior "B" team and Bill Kellar from the same club, along with Peter | "Hudson from the Midland Juveniles and Gordie Myles from the de- funct Stratford Kroehlers. Myles, who is back in Oshawa playing soft- ball here, was with the Generals two seasons ago and was given transfer to Stratford where he played good hockey last season , . . Oshawa Mer- chants expect to have Kitchener Legionnaires playing an exhibition | game here at the Stadium next Wednesday night and no doubt Jerry Creasy will get the pitching assig our advice is to be on hand early if you want a seat! . . , Willie Fordham started on the mound for Belleville Redmen on Wednesday night but yielded 11 hits for 9 runs in about five innings as Kingston went on a big hitting spree . . will likely get the hurling assignment for the games tonight or the one on Monday morning. He hails from Buffalo . . . Kansas City Monarchs, at present in second place and rated as the team to beat in the Negro American League, will play Merchants here on Saturday of next week. They offered to come and share a percentage of the gate--or play it "winner-take-all." Mmm! * Lb +» MORE BRIGHT STUFF -- "Mike" McArthur, who asked for his release from the Oshawa Merchants this week, rather than sit on the bench 'all season .while Chuck Walsh and Jim Rogers shared catching t for the Kitchener club, against his former mates . , . If the arrangements for this game are completed-- | 3: They're Off! Bike Riders Go July 2nd | The Dominion Day holiday this year is being celebrated on Mon- day of, next week, July 2, and again this Canada-wide celebration will be observed in Oshawa by the | most popular annual sporting event {held here, the motorcycle races at | the Alexandra Park oval, sponsor- led By the Kinsmen Club of Osh- | awa. It means machine | i | sponsored by the Kinsmen Club in | ¥ they'll be going that much faster, "accessories" that are trimmed in and, of course, it all adds up to more tikrills than ever in this most thrilling sport of all, Annually - this event attracts up- wards of 10,000 fans, and with this number behind them all the way, the men tax their own machines and their nerves to the very out- | close calls that add to the high- | pitched excitement of the day. With the crowds that have jam- med the stand and infield at Alex- andra Park over the years it seems unlikely that there's a man, wom- an or child in the immediate Osh- awa district that hasn't taken in at least part of the annual event, | co-operation with the Oshawa Ramblers . We admire "Mike" McArthur's stand--he prefers to get into action and improve his game with actual competition rather than share the profits of a nominal contract while merely siting on the bench . . . Incidentally, as a ber of the Merchants executive we're prepared to take our small share of the blame too if called upon--but we like to point out to President John and Coach "Mike" and to all officers of the Merchants Club that this techniue MAY produce a winning team | but it certainly will never "bring along the homebrews" . . .
