i THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 1951 PAGE TEN Em By Geo. H. CampeerL ~ GPORT SNAPSHOTS €) --_-- Sa-- Oshawa Transporters made the Toronto Peter Pans, 1950 O.B.A. Junior champions, look very ordinary when they clashed at the Stadium here last night. "Ab" Gilbert did another fine mound hcre and Ted O'Connor once again backed up our theory that he can become a top- notch catcher and his home-run blow was another nail in the Peters' Pans. More alert base-running however is needed by the Transporters in fact, we think Coach "Snowball" Wilson can take a night off and give his boys a stern grilling in this department. Some of em are actually "slow" in getting from the plate to 1st base, on a batted ball. The win tightened Oshawa's grip on top spot in the North Toronto League. Transporters have games in Toronto on Thursday and Sunday and play New Toronto Silverts here at the Stadium this Friday night. +* * * ' Oshawa Merchants have a busy week ahead of them, starting off with a trip to Galt tonight where they will play the Inter-County Terriers in an exhibition game, Tomorrow night, Croftons play here in Oshawa at eight o'clock, in a Viaduct League schedule fixture. Wayne Grandcolas, a left-hander from University of Southern Il- linois, who has won four games in five starts and comes here recom- mended by Darrel Thompson of last year's Merchants, will go to the mound for Oshawa tomorrow night against Croftons. Op Thurs- day night, the Galt Terriers of the Inter-County League will play an exhibition game in Oshawa and on Saturday afternoon the Peterborough Marines play a postponed game Flere and then stay around for another league game in the evening. - * * + Unitéd Taxi defea'ed Parts & Service 5-4 at Alexandra Park last night but the P-S boys gave the Cabbies a real scare. Parts got to 'Masowich to tie the score 4-4 after Cabbles had piled up four in the . second frame against Smykaluk. Locke held them off after that until Bobby Flintoff homered in the 9th, after there were two out. "Hootch" Meulemeester came in and saved the game for United Taxi, getting out of a big hole in the 7th, when the bases were loaded and none out. The fine showing of the P-S team should bé a big boost not only to that team but also to the entire league. Up in Toronto last night, Pedlars blanked Melville Realty 9-0 and it was Jack McConkey who was on the mound for Pedlars, with 10 strikeouts and only three hits allowed. + * * TUESDAY'S STEW -- Dave Ainslie, who played some good hockey for Oshawa in the early 30's, is now a successful business man in Trenton, N.J., but he was back in Galt last week, on a summer vacation. . + « Louis J. Fusk writing for the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, told his readers a week ago that "Hap" Emms would likely be signed up as the "new Quebec Junior puck coach before the week was out -- but our guess is that he not only was too optimistic but that it's very doubtful if Emms will leave his tive Barrie. After all, there's a lot of good bread-and- butter in Barrie for Mr. Emms and it isn't all tied up in his coaching chores either . . , Ex-Dodger Bruce Edwards banged another timely blow yesterday to give Cubs a win over the Braves . ., . Peterborough lacrossers won a 14-12 see-saw tilt up in Fergus last night . . . Solly Cantor won over Armand Savoie last night on a 10-round decision but the fans didn't see much in the way of real action . . « N.Y. Rangers have worked out a hockey deal with the Cincinnati Mohawks and "Pat" Egan has-been farmed out in the first deal. This ends Egan's long stay in the N.H.L. where he has been a reliable defenseman but never in the starry class, OSHAWA CRICKET T. & D. TEAM HAS ITS FIRST LOSS The Oshawa team lost its first léague game to Parkdale at Lake- shore Park, Toronto, last Saturday. The highlight of the game being . the. recovery of the Parkdale bats- 'gnen after a disasterous start and the collapse of the Oshawa batsmen after a very good start. The Oshawa Skipper again won the toss and decided to give the Parkdale team first innings and so have the advantage of using the new ball. The Parkdale batsmen were in very serious trouble early in the ifinings, four batsmen going for only seven runs. At this point J. Mi: and T. Gooderidge came together and proceeded to make a very gallant stand. The batting of J. McNicol was masterful, he played very good ball with restraint and punished hard any loose balls that came his way. The duel between Jimmy Chappell, the Oshawa spin bowler, and McNicol was a delight to watch. Jimmy finally being re- warded when McNical flied out to J. end of the innings. The bowling of the Oshawa team was first class, especially Jimmy Chappell's. He was superb. His concentration and control never faltered, and it must between the batsman in runnin & single, caused the collapse. But by the umpire seemed a raw one as the ball hit Al in the mid-sec- tion and also appeared to be break- ing off the wicket. Later the Osh- awa hopes were raised again when Al Hemingway and Willie Rickman made a last wicket stand, but this was just not Oshawa's day and J. McNicol had Rickman caught out with Oshawa's total still seven runs short for a tie. The only bright spot of the Oshawa innings was the improved batting of J. Huband and Al Hemingway. J. McNicol bowled well for Parkdale, but his final analysis was made possible more by the very inept showing of the Oshawa batsmen than by his really dangerous bowling. But tak< ing every thing into consideration, the Parkdale team really earned and deserved their win. PARKDALE INNINGS OSHAWA CRICKET-- K. Little, b Chappell 4 T. Thom, ¢ Howarth, b Tunstall' 0 P. Opening with a doublehealler to- day, Chicago's *'rags-to-Richards" club takes on the defending cham- pion Yankees in an important four- game series in New York Both clubs rested yesterday as only six teams saw action. Cleve- land moved a step closer to the American League leaders, outslug- ging the Red Sox in Boston, 9-7. Bob Feller, although hit hard, stag- gered to his 10th victory against gue defeat. Harry Taylor was the oser. The New York Giants nipped the St. Louis Cards, 5-4, in 12 innings and the Chicago Cubs shaded the Boston Braves, 5 - 4. The Giants trail the league - leading Brooklyn by 5% games. The Yankees must sweep the four games to displace the Sox at the top of the league, as Chicago leads by 3% games. Feller was supported by a 14- hit attack yesterday and needed all of the safeties. He went into the last half of the ninth with a 94 bulge and appeared on the way to an easy win. But Ted Williams received a free pass. Feller retired Vern Stephens but walked Bobby Doerr. Manager Al Lopez summoned Mike Garcia, who walked Clyde Vollmer to load the bases. Walt Dropo singled in two runs and Les Moss drove in another. Lou Boudreau walked to load the bases. Lapez then called in Lou Brissie. The lefthander was superb striking out the dangerous Billy Goodman and getting Johnny Pesky on a grounder. Sam Chapman of the Indians got four hits, including a home run. Monte Irvin's single off the left field wall scored Hank Thompson in the 12th inning with the run that won for the Giants over the Cards. Sal Maglie, who relieved starter Dave Koslo in the ninth when the Cards tallied twice to tie the score af 4-4, was the winner. It was his 11th win, tops in the majors. PETER PANS "TRA SPORTED" TO CLEANERS United Taxi Given Scare, Meulemeester Stops P-S Squad With Bases Loaded In 7th -- Flint- off's Homer Wins Game With 2 Out In 9th -- Locke Shines In Relief Role United Taxi maintained their un- defeated string in the Inter. "A" circuit when they nosed out Parts & Service 5-4 last night at Alex- andra "Park, but it took a superb relief hurling chore by "Hootch" Meulemeester to stop the rampag- ing P-S club anda homer by Bob Flintoff with. two men out in the 9th, to decide 'the affair. Smykaluk started on the mound for Parts and Service but it wasn't his night. He ran into serious trouble in the second inning when Rospond opened with a single' and Maeson walked. Elliott followed with a triple. Kovacs fanned and Maso- wich was safe on a choice play that was too late to get Elliott at the plate then Jack Stark singled and Jenkins was safe on an outfield error. When the dust had cleared, four runs had crossed the plate. Stan Locke took over the mound duties in the 3rd inning and he gave up only three singles and not any- thing that looked like a run until the fatal 9th inning. Bob Flintoff's homer came in the 9th, with two men out and the score tied at 4-4. Parts & Service got one run in the second when McCabe singled, was forced by Randall and then Smykaluk doubled, after Chapman fanned. Freddy Bidgood hit a homer in the 3rd, after there were two out, to make the count 4-2. Parts & Service Come Close In the 5th inning, March opened with a single. McKee popped out but Rockert singled and so did Bid- good and an outfield fly by Coulter let Rockert come home after the catch, to tie the score at 4-4. In the 7th, McKee opened with a single and right there United Taxi management decideed to take no more chances. Masowich was taken out in favor of "Hootch" Meulemeester. The left-hander was nicked for a safe bunt by Rockert and then Bidgood drew a walk to fill the bases -- with none out. It looked like the big chance for Parts & Service but Meulemeester had other ideas. He fanned Coulter and McCabe and Randall flied out to right. In the 8th, Meulemeester fanned three more and issued a walk. In the 9th he struck out four batters -- but the first one, Rockert, was safe at 1st when the catcher missed the 3rd strike, Rockert stole 2nd but the tying run "died" there as the next three batters whiffed. The fine relief pitching by both Locke and Meulemeester were the two bright spots of the game, plus the homers by Bidgood and Flintoff. None of the Cabbies got more than one safe hit while Rockert and Bidgood each had two safeties as the losers outhit United Taxi. R.H.E. (when they dropped a 7-2 decision at 855 | Civic Stadium under the lights. They came up with the kind of support for their pitcher that would make a team of three-year-olds look good in comparison. Jim Melville threw a fine game. He allowed eight hits, the same as winner Ab Gilbert. He fanned eight batters and didn't allow one walk .". » Only three earned runs were scored against him, TOO MANY ERRORS The big reason for Pans' loss lay in the amazing total of eight errors committed through the course of the game. Three bobbles by the short- stop, three by the third-sacker, one by the second-baseman and one by | the catcher . . . a red-hot infield. Gilbert's win saw him fan five and walk two. Henry Sarnoveky moved up in the RBI column when he singled and brought in McAllister for the 2-0 tally. Oshawa made it 3-0 in the fourth on a run scored by Lou Jankowski. The fourth tally crossed the platter in the fifth when O'Connor and Hastings belted consecutive doubles. O'Connor stepped to the plate in the home half of the seventh with one out and lifted a long, high drive into left. The ball disappeared in the mist and then a resounding thump was heard , . . it had hit the sign and was therefore credited as a four-bagger. Some blast! It was Ted's third of the year. GET TO GILBERT The eighth inning was exciting for both sides. Peter Pans finally started to get at Gilbert and in the other half, a hotly disputed play helped the fans to ride the umpires .,« . their favorite job. A walk and error and a sacrifice but men on second and third with one out in the top of the eighth. Gilbert was in trouble. George Jamieson proved it with a line single to centre to score the first run for Toronto. He saw Kutner fly to centre to move Bolitho to third. Jamieson then stole second. Henderson walkeed and the bases were loaded. Gilbert then forced Sheldon #o ground but weakly to end the rally. THAT ODD PLAY A passed ball allowed Lou to make third. Then came the ques- tionable call..Coggins was the bat- ter. The play was a squeeze-bunt to bring in Jankowski. The run scored, But the umpire decided that Coggins had interfered on the play. He called him out and sent Jan- kowski back to third . . . making it a 6-1 game again. John Jozkoski plated that run when he reached first on another infield single, The coach signalled him to hold-up at third, but he evidently missed the sign thinking the play at first on Hooper had been an out. It wasn't, and the relay to the plate nipped Jozz easily. Pans cashed their other run in the top of the ninth when Bolitho doubled with Mike Prep on base.
