THURSDAY, JUNE 7, 1951 PAGE NINE HINTS THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE It may sound ridiculous to say clean your washer after washing but do it and youll notice the dif- ference' in cleaner clothes, ' No matter how efficiently your washer drains there always remains an accumulation of soap film, odd bits of lint and a sludgy combina- tion of both. Failure to remove these accumulations may result in improper drainage and cause un- pleasant odors. Best time to clean your washer is right after washing. First re- move the agitator and scour it with a damp cloth and a mild cleansing Snowball Quilt How swiftly these quilt blocks snowball into a new quilt! That's because they're two-patch blocks. If your machine is the wringer type, wash the wringer rolls in clear sudsy water. - Release roll tension after cleaning. If you live in a hard-water area you'll probably find a good deal of soap film built up in the water tub. If not removed this may flake off and leave specks on the slothes. To remove the film, fill the empty machine with the hottest water available. Add a lime-dispersant (the new packaged heavy duty synthetic detergents contain one), plus half a cup of household am- monia. Run the machine for half an hour then run off water and wipe the inside of the tub with a cloth covered with mild cleansing powder. If any film remains, repeat process, 'When the tub is clean you might try waxing the inside. Wipe the enamel exterior of the machine sparkling clean with a damp cloth, wax and polish it, You'll find it much easier to keep your washer clean if you wax and polish it, Fluoridated Water Reduces Tooth Decay In the first five years since sodium fluoride was first applied to city water im Brantford, Ontario, public school children have had 31 per cent less tooth decay. This speaks well for the plan which has already been passed to "fluoridate" the water in Osh- awa. Dr. H. B. James, Dr. A, PF. Mackey and Mr. George Shreve will administer the scheme which will go into effect as soon as the com- mittee is able to obtain a year's supply of fluorides which are in short supply at present. The initial cost will be around $1,500 and yearly maintenance at the same rate approximately. The experiment was started by municipal groups in June 1945, and the Canadian Journal of Public Health has just released an inter- im report covering the first five years of a ten year trial. Their statistics show "presumptive evi- dence of the value of fluoridated water." When compiling dental statistics on groups of people, scientists talk about the number of D.M.F.'s which is the total number of teeth diseased missing, and filled. Before Brant- | ford began fluoride trials, school | dentists made two dental surveys | of about 2,750 school children, and | set average D.M.F. per child at 7.73. That is, the average Brantford pu- pil had nearly eight teeth affected | by tooth decay in some degree. Over the five-year period average D.M.F. has been steadily whittled down, and when last survey was taken in 1950, it stood at 5.32, al- most one-third less than in 1945. Brantford's fluoride committee es- timates 1949 costs were 12.6 cents per person for mixing 28 pounds of sodium fluoride with each million gallons of city water. 4 OCEANS OF WORLD SAID 'LIQUID MINES' New York (AP) -- The oceans of the world are "liquid mines" con- taining iron - bearing mineral, the American Iron and Steel Institute sald yesterday. It said the mineral was glauconite, a' close chemical relative of the taconites found in| the sedimentary rock deposits of | the Lake Superior region, It des- cribed glauconite as a greenish- granular mineral, deposited slowly near the mudline along seacoasts at depths of 600 to 5,000 feet, 'Weekly Sew-Thrifty a 9 A Wrapron with sun-neckline!
