"We are going to get the water- way or there'll be no water power, as far as I'm concerened," Charles A. Buckley (Dem.-N.Y.) Monday told a dinner given members of thé House of Representatives pub- lic works committee visiting sea- way sites. The Ontario and New York State governments have urged that the power development be undertaken if a go-ahead could not be obtained on the entire plan. The combined power and waterway project has been stalled for 10 years by lack of action by the U. 8. Congress. But another dinner speaker, Maj. Gen. Lewis Pick, chief of the U. 8. Army's Corps of Engineers, said the waterway alone should be un- dertaken. Said the general, accom- panying the committee as a tech- nical adviser: "We can get along without this power. We can make power else- where, but we need the (Labrador) iron ore and we must not allow selfish interests or motives to des- troy this project." Transport Minister Chevrier said the project is needed for both power and navigation. He said Ca- nadian government departments es- timate that there would be a $45- miilion-a-year saving in transporta- tion costs from the 2000-mile water- way which would admit ocean- going ships to the heart of the continent. in Toronto, meanwhile, Robert U.S. Committee Chairman Holding Out for Seaway Or No Power Development Cornwall Ont. (CP) -- The chair- H. Saunders, chairman of the On- tario Hydro-Electric Power Com- mission, said Canada definitely had decided to go ahead with the sea- way whether the U. S. assists or not. 'There is no question about it," Saunders said in an interview. U. 8. Ambassador Stanley Wood- ward said that, since his arrival in Canada a year ago, he has been impressed with the proposed de- velopment of the seaway as of prime importance to the U. S. He said he did not know how the com- mittee would vote, but he hoped its inspection of river areas would be beneficial. Earlier yesterday, committee members cruised over part of the proposed seaway route on a Ca- nadian government ship. They in- spected sites for prospective power installations. Today, they will cruise farther down-river to see other sections of the river's canal system. Would Cut Relations Of U.S. With Russia Washington (AP)-- Rep. Charles Kersten (Rep. Wis.) Farmers to Trap Alberta Beaver Edmonton --(CP)-- More than 18,100 of Alberta's beaver are ear- marked for the fur-coat market this year in a government program to keep the dam-building animals in equilibrium between the harm and good they do. Beaver have been heavily pro- tected . for 10 years and now are flourishing in most parts of the province. So, under a conservation scheme, 914 permits have been is- sued to Alberta farmers, allowing them to trap varying numbers of beaver on their lands. The num- ber has been set by individual in- spection of each farmer's land. He can sell the furs he collects. The permits are bound to widely- ranging points as far north as the Peace River and as far south as the Crow's Nest Pass.
