THURSDAY, MAY 31, 1951 THE DAILY TIMES.GAZETTE PAGE SEW ~ OF INTEREST TO WOMEN -~ 2, | | BEA UTY FOR YOU:- Pleasing Aids Charm By HELEN Loveliness should be heard, as well as seen. Billions of dollars are spent every year by women who desire to look their best, sport cute hair-dos, wear expensive and beau- tiful clothes. It = . or he thought people merely e They have ears too, and the smart girl will make additional beauty appeal by cultivating a charming voice. The woman who shouts or, shrills, who has a lingo of baby- talk, or who mumbles or drones is not in the pulchritude picture. She is handicapped. uy Fi voice can make or break you in business or social affairs. A loud talker in an office can prove 80 annoying that some fine day the boss just eases her out of the job. The girl who would be social- ly popular will not make the grade if she pitches her voice high and runs her words together, because she gets on the nerves of other individuals, Hostesses finally cut her off their lists. 'Well-mannered women have well- mannered voices. It isn't ladylike to drown others out of the con- versation. Yes, my friend, there are still women who take pride in being ladylike -- a good old-fash- foned word! Listen to the voices you hear around you. Analyze your response to them. That habit will teach you a lot about what you should do with your own. You will appreci- ate clear-cut enunciation. You will be annoyed by the: individual who talks too fast, running words to- gether, so that you must ask her to repeat what she has said. A nasal twang is not uncommon, end it is unnecessary, purely an acquired habit. You, like the voite that carries a feeling of friend- liness. It is not just what you say, but how you say it. A simple "hello" may be a warm greeting or something that sounds like "So JAMESON A loud talker is an office nuisance. * + ; it is you, is it? What do you want?" By way of tonal practice say the vowels one after the other, in a whisper, Give them clearness, and let your lips have full motion when doing ff. Make it & point never to pitch tones too high or to use too much volume. Too much emphasis is tiring to the listener. You know girls who exclaim "perfectly heavenly" or "perfectly divine," driving other people slightly daffy. WHAT SHOULD J DO ABOUT» Planning Bridal Shower? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: 1. I an to be a bridesmaid at my cousin's wedding in July. I would like to give a shower for her, but I know that it is not proper for rel- atives to give showers However may it be done if you are a member of the bridal party? 2. Is it proper to invite people to a shower who are not invited to the wedding? 3. When you give a shower do you plan to play games? Wondering. 1. Why don't you and the other 'attendants join together and give a shower for the bride-to-be? 'I think this type of shower is one of the nicest and gayest; and as one of the co-h your pr would be as an attendant more than as a cousin * 2. There would be manw IF's about this answer. In general, if the wedding is to be large, or fairly large one, it would seem natural that those who were invited to such an intimate party as a shower would also be invited to the wedding, even if only to the ceremony and perhaps not to a small reception to follow. 3. Generally there are no games at a shower . . . those who gather together for this intimate party find the time passes too, too, quickly, what with the presentation and opening of he presents, the re- freshment-serving, and the "much- chatting" about the romantic plans and all the this-a and that-a of the world of friendship. NAVY-BLUE DRESS WITH SPARKLING-WHITE ACCESSOR- IES ONE OF THIS SEASON'S FASHION HIGHLIGHTS Dear Mrs. Beeckman: You have always been so helpful to me in the past that I would like to "call on you" again. I am going to California to attend the gradua- tion of my son from college. Since I have not yet met his wife, I am particularly axious to be properly dressed for this occasion. The grad- uation exercises are on a Sunday evening. Navy-blue is especially becoming to me, and I would like to wear navy-blue with white acces- sories. Do you approve? 'And should I wear a hat and gloves? My first impulse is to suggest that you write your son's wife and ask her for her "kindly" guidance" as to what is appropriate to wear on 'this so-important occasion. She would, I am sure, be. touched by wood, your asking for her advice, pleas «at your faith in her taste a discrimination. However, if you pre- fer not to do this, I konw that you could plan the perfect costume for this Sunday evening occasion. For navy-blue-with-white-accessories is perhaps the most fashionable dress- theme this season, and you are fortunate indeed that it is so be- coming to you For the navy-blue dress (which, remember, must be cool and cool- looking) you may choose a thin, thin taffeta . . . very stylish this year, very smart . . . or a fine quality of chiffon, or any other light-weight and sheer material and in the simple, very simple, de- sign of the dress . . . no unneces- sary lace touches or other 'decora- tions.' And if your derss is ankle- length it will, I think, be "just right." Blue pumps to match your dress. For the white accessaries: have them sparkling white, pertly white, fresh-as-a-daisy . . . this is the charm and style ,of the blue-and-white (and black-and- white) combination. Wear very- white gloves of the length suitable with your seleve length. A white lapel flower looks very crisp and effective as an accessory; ery often, this season, one or two carnations . + «. to be quickly exchanged for real white flowers, if you prefer, for the exercises. A small white dinner-type purse, perhaps a flat envelope purse. I doubt very much if women will wear hats for this Sunday evening occasion, but, if you wish, you could wear on your hair one of the fashionable blue | OVER-ALL EFFECT Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (AP)-- What ef- fect has the congressional investi- gation of Communism in Holly- wood had on the film business? For one thing, a few hours' 'es- timony in Washington can en- danger or even wipe out an invest- ment of $1 million. That is what happened when Lar- ry Parks told the House of Re- presentatives Un-American Activi- ties Commitee that he had once been a Communist but had drifted away from the party. His words made a: risky venture out of what had appeared to be a box - office winner -- a film called "Love is Better Than Ever," in which Parks co-starred with Elizabeth Taylor. MGM, which invested about $1 million in the picture, has an- nounced it has no plans for the release of the film. The studio is carefully watching straws, in the wind to find out' what the public' s reaction will be toward Parks. Some, including members of the congressional commitee say Parks should be forgiven. DEFINITE LOSS A definite financial loss because of the investigation was syffered by RKO and Producer Irving Al- len. The independent producer made 'Slaughter Trail" with Ho- ward da Silva in one of the lead- ing roles. After da Silva refused to answer the committee's ques- tions as to whether he was a Com- munist, it was decided to delete his scenes from the picture. Re-Shooting with Brian Donlevy in the part played by da Silva will add $100,000 to the film's cost. Another financial repercussion concerned Director Frank Tuttle, who told the committee he had been a Communist but later quit. His producers had planned for him to direct a couple of pictures in Vienna but reported their backing had withdrawn after the publicity about Tuttle. George Murphy, one of the in- dustry's leading spokesmen, be- lieves that publicity about movie Reds is one of the reasons the movie busines has not been very ood. "I think the investigations have had a bad effect on movie busi- ness," he said. '... People I meet in tours tarough the country ask me what we are doing about 'all those Reds in Hollywod.' They think the whole, town is in- volved. "I think it is time for the good Americans in the industry to com- bat the bad opinion that the Com- munists have brought on Holly- Growing Group Aids Backward Children MONTREAL -- (CP)--The sum- mer holidays usually mean a rest for the school; but not with the Association for the Help of Re- tarded Children. The next three months will be spent in putting into operation three new projects and preparing for expansion in the fall, said Mrs. W. L. Wollock, chairman of the group. ' The association is set to pro- mote the general welfare of men- tally-retarded children and to fur- ther study, research, and under- standing of them, The association, formed six months ago, has appointed district chairman who will head six local associations. GLAMORIZING:- * DO you, envy the beautiful crea- ture on the movie screen whose eyelashes are long, black silky fringes? You could have them, too, if you had a Hollywood make- up artist at your side. Some of the growth is her own, but most of it is a transplanted crop, put in a shaft at a time in the midst of the natural fuzzers and held with an adhesive liquid. Eyelash culture is something that is overlooked by the majority of the beauty seekers. Winkers should be washed twice a day with hot water, then with col, so the blood streams ia the eyelids will bring them nourishment. They should be groomed with a tiny brush on the bristles of which are a few drops of mineral oil. A lubricant will not only prove a stimulating agent, but will impart lustre, make the silky threads look darker, If the oil gets in the eyes it will do no harm. Every little hirsute taread has a sebaceous gland, plac. ed there for the purpose 'of lubri- catimg, but often these glands loiter on the job. Then the lashes may be likely to fall, _-- Wife Preservers ' Grooming for Your Eyelashes By HELEN FOLLETT Nice eyelashes are a beauty asset any girl can acquire, says Movie Star Arleen Whelan, Whether they're your own, or false ones, they're an important part of the facial picture, + * If it is necessary to use a dark- ening agent, you will find mascara convenient and effective. Use it sparingly. Brush it on the upper fringes with an upward motion to give the delicate shafts a pretty tilt, The growth on the lower eye- lid should not be darkened. There is often some moisture there and who would have muddy-rimmed eyes? The crayon was designed espe- cially for the eyebrows, never serves satisfactorily on the eye- lashes because it is likely to pass through the growth onto the white surface of the skin. When darkening those pretty scimitars on your forehead do tiny strikes from the inner terminal to the outer one instead of tracing a single line, : A Physician Advises You By HERMAN M. BUNDESEN, M.D. WOOD ALCOHOL WOOD alcohol is widely used in industry as a solvent and as an important ingredient in inexpen- sive anti-freeze preparations. In this role it can do no harm, but it is poisonous when rubbed on the skin, taken by mouth, or in- haled in sufficient quantities. The correct name of this sub- stance is methyl alcohol. It is sometimes disastrously confused with ethyl alcohol and wrongly put into hair tonics or used as a skin rub. However, most cases occur among those who drink it in the mistaken belief that it can be used an an alcoholic beverage. TRACES REMAIN The kidneys cannot easily elimi- nate methyl alcohol, and traces of it may remain for weeks or months after it has been taken into the body. In mild cases, the symptoms con- sist of headache, dizzines, tiredness, and slight pain in the abdomen. As the condition becomes more se- vere, sudden blindness may occur or even sudden death. In some in- stances, vision is slowly reduced until only a small fraction remains. Many people become delirious. Once. the patient lapses into a coma, there is irregular breathing and a blue color because the heart cannot pump enough blood through the body. WOOD ALCOHOL The treatment in these cases is highly inadequate if a large amount of the wood alcohol has been taken. Many of the symp- toms of the disease are due to an acidifying of the blood of the in- dividual. This must be corrected as soon as possible and is done by washing out the stomach with baking soda and giving baking soda by mouth. Many patients in coma are not able to take the medicine. It is then given tlirough a tube put into the stomach, or in the form of fluids into a vein. This procedure, however, should be done with great care. A determination may be made of the amount of alcohol in the blood. This should be done at fre- quent intervals and can determine the course of the treatment. Oxy- gen may be life-saving in some of these cases and, if there is shock, DRAPERY SERVICE Made-to-Measure Drapes and Curtains DIAL 5-5103 T To taste it is to superb quality a SALADA 8 pres: ar the oF #00 of plasma should be given. It happened after I did some strenuous exer- cises. Do you think I injured it? Answer: Many times people in- jure their tail bone or coccyx when doing strenuous exercises or when falling down, especially if they fall down the stairs. Usually the con- dition improves with time. Many times, however, improvement does not occur and it is necessary to give the patient injections of an anesthetic around the bone or have the coccyx removed surgically. FRENCH MAYONNAISE By the way have you ever tried to make French mayonnaise? Here's your recipe and your method. Remove every bit of white from the yplk of one egg--be certain that yolk is as nearly dry as possible be- fore you add salt and pepper and dry mustard to taste. With spoon--preferably a wooden one--mix the yolk and seasonings, taking care to stir always in one die rection only. Add a few drops of oil and keep stirring and make certain mixture is kept stiff. Add a drop or two of vinegar--but be . cereful here--much more oil than vinegar should be added at the be- ginning otherwise the mayonnaise will become liquid. Continue adding drops of oil--and vinegar when nece. essary--until you have the required amount of mayonnaise.
